Oh, and also: THANK YOU for an absolutely pitch-perfect gender-switched picture of what it's like for a teenaged girl to be pregnant in school, and to decide she's going to keep it.
All the elements were there; from HER being ruined; becoming the subject of scorn and cruelty from her peers; being expected to leave school in shame, and give it up for adoption without question or contest; having ruined prospects for career and social acceptance, no matter the circumstances; the media's merciless approach to the spectacle; everyone's immediate assumption that she must have wanted to get knocked up, (because otherwise she'd have used the pill, because contraception is the girl's responsibility!); the partner-in-conception's anger and resistance to the idea of ever having anything to do with his child; the willingness of the world at large to let the non-burdened parent walk away scot-free and without consequence, while the bearer is destroyed and buried under scorn.
It's seriously ALL THERE. The fact that it takes changing the gender of the bearing and non-bearing parents to make it plain what a fucking disgusting crucifiction unwed motherhood is in the West is really kind of sad.
But I'm really glad you did so. This story had a really great message to it, and I hope lots of people hear it loud and clear.
