The [info]snarry_games have the best Mods in fandom—they've worked so hard for years to give all of us such a supportive environment in which to play—thank you! Also, my heartfelt appreciation to [info]jadzialove for the excellent beta reading, to [info]whitecotton for help with Scottish-izing my Scottish, and to [info]sestra_prior for her assistance with British questions. Team Snitch, thanks for your input, your team spirit, and your love of Snarry. It's been a privilege and honor to cavort with you all and wield my big stick. Lastly, I'd be remiss if I didn't express my appreciation to Rudyard Kipling for his masterpiece, Captains Courageous.

Summary: Belonging and deserving, needing and wanting—desires of the human heart that Severus and Harry must face when they're forced to the little village of Lochdubh to settle a very late codicil of Albus Dumbledore's will.

This was so incredible - I just want to know where I can buy those audiobooks though!

I get to be the first commentor (if I hurry)!!! (I read it already!)

(I did notice the mods posted the Captain of each team's stories on the same day.) ;)

And this is one of those stories that I will definitely reread a multitude of times. Let me confess, I have done it already. I get antsy over crossovers, particularly when I'm not at all familiar with the new characters. Clearly, my fears where unfounded. You wrote them so well I didn't need to be.

But it was Snape's lesson to Harry that got under my skin and stayed that way long, long after I read it. I weeped. God, how I loved to be moved in a scene to that level, but to have a sex scene be that touching (lets not forget to mention sizzling as well) and that deeply emotional...wow. You took lovemaking to a level that I have truly rarely read before. Who could blame Harry for crying afterward? I cried right along with him. There will be lots of people who post far better comments than I. I wish I could find the words to explain how that scene touched me.

I loved how they both got what they both so desperately needed AND wanted at the end. It was beautifully written. Heck...this is YOU. That's hardly a surprise to anybody. ;)

I've been waiting for this to go up so I can load it onto my ereader and have something nifty for the trip to work in the morning. Yaay!

Love the quote excerpts, and I s'pose that means I should read some Kipling. (My Kipling reading has mostly been limited to "poetry that Leslie Fish turned into songs.")

I love poor Harry convinced he doesn't deserve a healthy relationship. Love him trying to re-create the night with Snape by seeking out short, brutal encounters. And the semi-cliche plot complication, with a unique twist--hey, it's not Snape! (Not being more specific 'cos I think that very early comments shouldn't have blatant spoilers.)

Wonderful story!

Having had the very excellent opportunity to see this story take shape, my comments might be a bit biased. And I happen to agree with Elf about spoilers, so it's hard to squee about anything in particular without giving things away.

You managed to find the perfect occupation for your Snape, I think, and I really loved what time and distance and comfortable living helped him to become. And your Harry broke my heart---I felt his pain, shared it. As always, you've given us something unique and wonderful.

In fact, I have so much love for this story, I'm gonna read it again. And probably again...

You've made me want to read Captain's Courageous, as well. Just not tonight... *makes note to self*

As soon as you wrote Severus' new profession, my imagination immediately drummed up Rickman's liquid tones. So, I must say that every time Harry sat outside the room, listening to Severus read aloud, I was sitting right there with him in ecstasy.

Such a powerful rollercoaster of emotion you have given us; from loneliness and self-denial, up the bank of never-dimmed sexual tension, right over the peak of the big twist and down to the mellowness and ease of lasting devotion.

Thank you so much for taking me along for the ride.

Most lovely and grand work! I really love how Severus and Harry interact in this and the plot is absolutely wonderful. Imagining Severus reading books out loud is delightful, too bad we can't really buy the audiobooks with his voice, haha.~Sophia

I want those books! NOW! OMG - I love the thought of Severus recording audiobooks! This was quite the rollercoaster ride - but in the end, I adored Severus using the "P" word and Harry agreeing! A wonderful story!

Why do your stories always make me cry so much? What is it about your work that grabs my heart and wrenches it? So bloody moving, what you do in a story is extraordinary. You are extraordinary.

So good, so real, so rigth.
The previous relation between them it had been a surprise.
Julius another surprise.
All the story a big surprise, heart taking and moving.
And the title just perfect.

Thanks for all of sensations you made me fell.

I've never seen Hamish Macbeth, but for this story that didn't matter, you explained everything so well that I didn't feel lost. Glad that Harry found belonging at last :)

A wonderful fic.

take care,

this was so good. I loved the ebb and flow of their relationship. How they just couldnt quite get it right, their understanding of what they wanted/needed, it was like pulling teeth. But it never once felt wrong what they were doing, never forced by the author, it felt so natural and real. I adored this.

Oh, there is nothing I like more than a mystery and I love the way this story unfolds. The dialogue and pacing is excellent and I'm so impressed by all those little flashes of characterization genius that just pop up seemly at random but always make me think, "Of course! This makes so much sense and why didn't I ever realize this before?"

I really felt for poor Harry. What you put that boy through! Your Snape and Harry always have such a hard row to hoe, but you make it worthwhile in the end. If only they both weren't so damaged things would be much less complicated between them. But probably less rewarding as well.

The unusual occupations were another stroke of genius. Snape's, especially, is perfect. Like everyone else, I'll be waiting for Amazon to put those audiobooks up for sale. Who knows? I might be tempted to actually listen to the classics. ;D

Great job, el Capitan!

When I saw the length, I bookmarked this story into a Read Later folder and somehow it wound up at the top of the list rather than the bottom so when I had time today to spend reading, it's what I came across first. It's likely it would have been a month from now, or longer, before I read it otherwise, but I'm so glad it's what came up.

This is such a lovely story. I have a real weakness for stories where people who are lost wind up found, maybe because I don't really think it happens like that in real life (or it hasn't for me, anyway - I really identified with this Harry, I think especially because I'm going through one of my, you know, quarterly... bi-monthly... whatever crises of omg I'm 28 and have gone nowhere and have no plans or means to get away from it) and would like to think that it could happen. In any case, I suppose it's a good thing to have a weakness for because so much literature is about growth and personal change.

Anyway. I'm babbling. I suppose I don't really know what to say, except that I enjoyed this story and was touched by it and despite my general disbelief that life ever does fall together quite like that I didn't find it unlikely or particularly hard to believe while I was reading it. I've always enjoyed the stories you write, and this is no different.
