CHAMPION INTERVIEW # 3 - Sherant!
We welcome to the Games for the first time:
Your Name: sherant
Your Team: Phoenix!
Archive: (optional) Don't have one. :\
1. Which HP character gives you the most trouble to draw?
Whomever I'm currently drawing, lol. Snape can actually be pretty tricky, I think I have like, one expression for him. Perhaps the Weasleys since I've never drawn any of them besides Ron, Ginny, and the twins. Draco gives me fits from time to time -keeping him consistent. But Harry is like silly putty -I can make him do anything!
2. What was the first fandom you ever produced art for?
That would be Ultraman when I was four. LOL, I loved that show! I've always drawn, so I've drawn art of my favorite shows and books all my life. I didn't start doing "serious" fanart (that is, serious absorption of my time, not "serious art") until I was in art school. The Legend of Zelda was so much fun to play and I loved the character designs and movement that I was really inspired. Then once I read the HP books I cast off a bit of my soul and went a little crazy.
3. Has your experience in fandom changed the way you do art? How?
It's made me appreciate the people that appreciate it -and shown me that some people have no respect for anything. It's still a great source of random inspiration, but in doing all the quick and silly pics I've learned that I want to spend more time with a piece and experiment with media -I want to make Art with a capital "A." Too much of my fanart is lacking in that area, IMO, like I was making it for public consumption rather than for myself. Not that there's anything wrong with that! I just want to go a bit further.
4. In a Snape/Harry/(Your team's Mascot) cage match, who wins?
Let's see... Snape prepares to Avada the flying bird when suddenly Harry trips over his shoelaces, sending the spell astray and them both to the floor; the Phoenix dissolves into laughter and a ball of flame, consuming them all. The end.
5. What are your favourite mediums to work with?
Whatever writing implement is handy, usually. I really enjoy digital as it's easy to edit and manipulate. Mixed media is a lot of fun, particularly colored pencil and watercolor. I also love the feel and vibrancy of pastels and oil paint. Stained glass and sewing are also creative outlets for me, but I have yet to apply them to fanart...
6. What do you consider your strongest talent? Your weakest?
Sometimes I actually manage to convey the emotion I intend! I'd have to say that consistency of proportions is a constant bane. My drawn hands are often weird, and I think it's because my own hands look quite odd. Of course, that weakness pales in comparison to my (un)reliable output.
7. Is there a piece of art that you think is your absolute best so far? Would you link it for us?
Hrmm, it's hard to say what makes something "best" in my eyes. Currently I still enjoy the Harry/Draco piece I did in thanks for my hd_holidays writer, mizbean (you can view it here). It was the first time I'd really ever had a mirror in art, and learned that you can't just copy & paste foreground objects into the reflection -unless they're all on the same plane- because the depth is mirrored too. I like the muted analogous colors and the effect of the mirror's surface. Plus, it was just plain fun to have a picture where the subjects aren't actually in it -their reflections are!
8. What (or who) inspires you in Fandom?
Everything really. Challenge prompts, offhand comments, compositions or colors of other art, a great line in a fic... anything!
9. Fanfic writers often say the best compliment they can get for their stories is unsolicited fanart. What would you consider the highest form of compliment for your fanart?
Just that you enjoy it -you don't even have to tell me you do. I make pieces regardless of feedback because I want to make them. Whether everyone said, "this is great" or, "this sucks" -it wouldn't have an effect on my output (my self-esteem perhaps, particularly in the latter case, but not my creative output :P). My only request is that you enjoy it in the context of my post -if the pic is copied and posted without the context often a lot of the meaning (or irony or humor) is lost. And if something I've drawn has inspired you, great! I'd love to see it if you're willing to share. :)
10. Are you excited about being in the Games this year?
Absolutely! This is my first time in the Games (and my first serious Snarry piece) - I couldn't resist the challenge of working with a pairing I have little experience with. Gotta get my Snare on. ;)
Thank you, sherant! Stay tuned for more interviews!
