So, despite it's being non-magical AU, and set in America, I really liked this story. I liked your Harry, who despite his youth is so willing to go after what he wants, to stand up and say what he needs to, to acknowledge his errors and try to make amends. I also like the sweetness in him, the way he's still willing to believe in love at first sight and happily-ever-after.
I like the presence of Ron and Hermione (and 'John'), and your clever use of other canon characters. Rita Skeeter is just as smarmy without magic as she is with, and I think Dore is a brilliant take on Dumbledore's willingness to use others--use them up, if need be--for 'the greater good.'
Steven Snape is brilliantly drawn, and I think neo-Nazis are the perfect real-world analogue of the Death Eaters. It's a blessing they don't seem to have quite so successful a leader/focal point as Voldemort, but I fear they'll find one sooner or later. I think the thing I admire most about your Snape is his emotional courage. Even though he has not much experience in people caring about him, even though he has more than ample evidence that they'll screw you over if it suits them, even though he's really only just met Harry and really has no reason to believe he'll stick around, he's still willing to give the relationship a try.
