TEAM DRAGON ENTRY: Josan "One Down, Two Across"
Title: One Down, Two Across
Author: [info]josan
Team: Dragon
Genre(s): Alternate Universe *Hover/Click for Games Definition of Alternate Universe*
Prompt(s): Silver and Puzzles
Rating/Warnings/Kinks: NC-17; *Character death, but, trust me, you'll be happy for him. And it's only a 'sort of' death anyways. * Also, I don't believe that a Head of House has to be an alumnus of that House. Nor do I believe that a Head of House or a professor at Hogwarts even has to have attended Hogwarts. Just so you know.
Word Count: 22,291
Summary: When is a crossword puzzle not a crossword puzzle? When it leads Harry on an adventure.
A/N: First of all, many thanks to [info]djin7, whose idea this fest was. It was great meeting you in person at Prophecy. I look forward to the day the Senators meet the Canucks in the playoffs. (And we both know who will win, n'est-ce pas?)

Next, I must acknowledge my 'bounce-ideas-off-her' beta: Sylvadin, who keeps me focussed on storytelling.

Then come my researchers, who are so kind as to help the Luddite in me. Once again, Sylvadin and my Team Dragon mates, [info]igtow ( both of whom found me clothing sites) and [info]amand_r (who helped with food and names).

Last, but not least, not by a long shot, the ever-watchful [info]amand_r and the fantastic [info]centaury_squill, who professionally blue-pencilled this story.

P.S.: Must also mention the Team Dragon Captain, [info]joanwilder, who gave the story its last spit and polish.

Without all of these people, you would be reading a far weaker story.

I loved the crossword set-up, Ernie Macmillan, the Chinese locale, Gang Li, Mei-ping (kudos from Team Dragon!), the intriguing back story to Snape's 'transformation', the delicious and HOT scene where Harry gets some has his aura 'adjusted,' the fitting end of Snape, the transferring of Zabini to Hogwarts, the knowledge that Harry will finally be completely happy, and that he, once again, owes his life to Snape.

And the cherry on the top is Bai Wai in the Headmaster's office. Snape will never be gone nor forgotten.

Terrific job--I'm so happy you're a DRAGON! ROARRRRRRR!

I loved that Severus' unique sense of humor sends his namesake such a gift! I loved this the second time as much as I did the first! Exquisite and elegant!

Damn!
I'm speechless. That was really wonderfully crafted, the details that you included, the way you gave us a Snape and Harry who were recognizable and yet so different because they had both matured... Just beautiful!
This has so many luscious bits, just your descriptions of their robes were wonderful
Ernie's voice in Harry's head was hilarious! And Blaise... GUH!
Really masterful story!

I really enjoyed this. I love the idea of the crossword to tell Harry where Snape was, then the transformation due to the manner of his survival. And, for that matter, Harry's transformation upon return to England. And Blaise.

Just awesomeness all the way around.

The slow, languid beginning of the story riveted me from the start. The more I read, the more enthralled I became. As the story unfolded, I was constantly trying to guess what was happening. And so thusly it went:

The raven cocked its head. "Soon," it said, its voice rough, not human really.

Hmmm, I wonder if the raven is an animagus. ::hopeful:: Snape, is that you?

Harry rested hands on hips and shook his head. "I wish you could talk, truly talk. Maybe you could tell me why the hell I'm here? What does he want with me?"

Yeah, me too, what is going on?! ::confuzzled::

Had Snape smiled like that at the young Harry Potter, that boy would have followed him anywhere.

::leans forward:: Ohhh, really really?

She perked up, making shrill delighted noises when Snape directed the treats down to her. "Don't gobble," warned Snape.

She looked up at him, exaggeratively careful to take one of the chilies out of the bowl by its green stem, using the tips of her teeth, before tossing it up in the air and gobbling it down.

::chuckles:: Awww. ♥Mei-Ping♥

Harry shook his head. "You invited me here for...a....a gossip session?"

::blinks:: Well, color me stunned. I would never have thunk up that one. ::bemused::

He could feel. He could hear. He could see, if he could manage to get his eyes open. He just couldn't move.

Oh dear oh dear oh dear...what's going on?! ::continues to read avidly::

...ohmyohmyohmy...

ummm...what ha'pened...?

Zabini rested his head against the back of the bench and rubbed a hand over his face. "Severus is dying."

WHAT?! Nnnnnnooooooooooooo, plz to be not doing this, plz!!!!!

"He wanted to see you because he needed to know that what he had sacrificed was worthwhile."

You're making me cry, plz to be not doing that... ::sniffs::

Zabini reached out and placed a hand on Harry's arm. "No. He was dying before you even came here. All you've done is cost him a week or two of a life that has become far too painful to him."

"He's in pain?"

::still crying::

::whimpers::

Harry wondered what the Headmaster was talking about. The man opened the door to his office but stepped back. "The portrait... He's awakened."

...okay... ::resigned::

Huh, I was wondering throughout the story if Chun-Chen was an animagus and it turns out I was right. :iz pleased::

I'm happy for Mei-Ping and Blaise and Harry.

::deep breath:: Unbearably sad yet very memorable. It broke me a little when I realized how it was all going to play out but the ending was excellent and I am glad that Severus, at last, is free from his pain. 'Twas bittersweet and beautifully written. You've crafted a brilliant gem of a story. Brava!

Oh, aargh. *sniffles* My eyes are too wet with tears still to type much! I loved this beautiful story. The puzzles and delights, the beauty and mystery, Harry's slow path toward greater peace and new happiness. Did not like Severus being ill and dying! *cries some more* Darn you for making me smile and cry at the same time!

Love the little dragon. Lovelovelove the ending! And ... after all these years of hoping that Once Upon a Time in Egypt would go to China, I think that story - or a relative (*bg*) - has. How beautiful and delightful! Thank you so much for this story. Every word is graceful, every scene sublime, and the characters purest love.

This is really a stunning and unique story. I'm just as amazed by it now as I was before. This was so gripping. Intriguing. It pulls you in and holds you for the whole story.

I love the many details. The setting, the different characters, the clues, and Snape. And Harry. You are one of the best all-around story-tellers I know.

I thought this was incredibly well written, and I hope I wasn't the only idiot scribbling down the crossword clues on a piece of paper ;)

I thought the whole thing was sensitively handled, and I admire how you stayed true to Severus' changes, by not having him miraculously able to shag Harry, but instead bring Blaise into the story.

Thank you so much for the original and intriguing read :)

This has been my absolute favorite of the games so far. Brilliant writing - amazing plot details and set up - I wish there had been a possibility for more true Snarry, but this just... wow. The transformation of Harry from the man who wasn't truly happy to the man who is now able to do things for himself and enjoy his life... all because of Severus/Bai Wei's influence... I love it. Wonderful, wonderful fic. Thank you for writing this!

I loved the setting of this, how unusual and otherworldly the dark underground was, and the magic from outside Europe and Rowling's universe. And I like Harry's devotion to his children and teaching, which makes so much more sense to me than that he'd be satisfied as an Auror.

Oh my- wow! Amazing! I seriously liked this more than i can say! I adored the crosswords at the beginning, and Harry's bad mood when security filled them in for him~ The setting of China was fantastic and all of the magic and characters~ And despite the fact that it was Blaise, a character whom i rarely read, i really did enjoy everything that occurred between them. I could have died when Mei-Ping showed up for Al! >___< ~♥ I just love the Severus that you've created in this!

This was a wonderfully creative story, but in my honest oppinion, it was not Snarry, and that was a huge disapointment to me.

I loved many things about the story, and as I said, it is wonderfully creative. I am in no way disparaging the story it's self, just the fact that it wasn't Snarry.
