CHAMPION INTERVIEW # 42, Team Dragon Member, Aqua_alta!
Your Name (lj and/or Penname): aqua_alta (aka Becca Snape)
Your Team: Team Dragon
1. 'Canon compliant' is a hot button topic in Harry Potter fandom (thanks to all the 'After-Book Specials' JKR is hosting). What is your definition?
To me, the words in the books are canon. (I might stretch my definition to movie and JKR interview/homepage facts as something along the line of "extended canon", though.) Yes, that means that I do consider the Epilogue to be canon, too. *g* (BTW, I just recently learned/realised what "EWE" means in a fic's header, and I think it is hilariously funny!)
But what is "canon" and what is not is not the problem, I think. I think the problems come with the word "compliant". When I did theatre studies at uni, one of the things we most frequently discussed was: 'What is a "text compliant" stage adaptation of a dramatic text?', which, of course, led straight to the question if there's such a thing at all. (In German the wording is even more tricky, since we say 'texttreue Inszenierung' (which would be "stage adaptation faithful to the text (of the drama)'). Most of us back in the days opted for a 'werktreue Inszenierung' (which would be 'faithful to the (piece of) artistic work') as a possibility, but we were also aware that that didn't really solve any problems. IMO, there has to be – by nature and by definition – space for interpretation open to those who work with a text or with a number of texts (an oeuvre). That goes for stage adaptations as well as for movie adaptations as well as for fanfic and art.
Having said that (please excuse my rambling a little on this one ...) – personally, I like to stick to canon facts as closely as possible, but I do like to stretch them as much as possible as well. If the words (books, movies, interviews/homepage, s. a.) leave room for a certain interpretation, IMO said interpretation is canon compliant. If the writer finds a convincing way around the words within the 'system' of canon, IMO it's canon compliant. If you wrote something that negates the words without giving a logical (again, within the 'system' of canon) explanation, I'd vote for "not canon compliant" or maybe AR. (Which doesn't mean that I wouldn't like the fic/art, of course. It's just something I wouldn't want to write.)
2. Has fanfic influenced your writing? If yes, was it a particular story you can name for us?
Oh gods, yes! There are a lot of fics which have amazing dialogue (something I find incredibly hard to write) and from which I have learned a lot. Same goes for characterisation (not as much as in "how a character is written", but rather as in "how the characterisation is done", e.g. through dialogue, actions etc.), atmosphere and non-verbal interactions between characters.
I can't name a single story, though.
But I do confess that I made it a purpose of my fics for a certain period of time to insert the phrase "ever so slightly" in every Snape-related fic I wrote, because I perceived it to be a fanfic convention. Come on, guys, 'fess up! Who else did/does it?
3. What element(s) about the relationship between Snape and Harry do you find most intriguing?
The age difference (and I'm not talking about Harry at 14 or something like that, I'm thinking more of the general dynamics of the clash of generations), the dynamics of power (I perceive both of them as very powerful), the clash of characters, the UST. The whole shebang, so to speak. :-P
4. How would Severus Snape find your team mascot most useful?
Dead, I think. Twelve Uses of Dragon Blood, dragon hide gloves, dragon heartstring etc. anyone?
5. What would you consider your greatest strength in writing?
Angst and atmosphere, plain and simple.
6. Is there something your beta(s) constantly catch you doing?
Yes. To many orgasms for the same character in a given period of time. *cringes*
Oh, and too many parentheses (either in brackets or – as it might occasionally happen in my writing – in dashes).
7. Have you ever collaborated/partnered with another author or artist? If yes, please describe it for us. If no, would you consider it?
No, I haven't. But I think I'd like to one day, especially with an artist.
8. Now that canon is complete, do you find it more freeing or less when it comes to writing or enjoying fanfic/fanart?
Neither. Everything is possible. Still.
9. In your opinion, what kind of kink/theme does fandom need more of?
kink: dirty talk
theme: Dumbledore (and people who know me might find that strange, but I really think he's one of the most interesting characters in the whole series even if I'm still not sure I like him. Fearfully fascinating subject, that barmy old codger...
10. How do you feel about participating in this year's Snarry Games?
Whoohoo! I'm thrilled, of course!
Thank you, aqua_alta! Stay tuned for the last few Champion Interviews and Opening Games Crack!Art! Due to the technical difficulties on IJ, we will be posting two interviews a morning for a couple days to help the schedule.
The Games begin in A FEW DAYS!
