I think Harry's 'saving people thing' and Snape's really quite desperate, if well-suppressed/denied need to be saved (which really is just a manifestation of being *valued*) are like peanut butter and chocolate.
Yes, really well said! I especially think you're on the mark about Snape: he desperately wants to be saved, because it would mean that somebody values his existence enough to want him around, but he's simultaneously used to being undervalued and also loath to show anything approaching vulnerability, so he tries to cover it up with snarls and sneers and other forms of defensive behaviors.
Thankfully, canon!Harry doesn't like to back away from a challenge. *g*
