CHAMPION INTERVIEW # 22- Amanuensis!
Your Name: Amanuensis, or amanuensis1 on both LJ and IJ.
Archive link(s): http://www.amanuensis1.com
Your Team: Dragon!
1. 'Canon compliant' is a hot button topic in Harry Potter fandom (thanks to all the 'After-Book Specials' JKR is hosting). What is your definition?
I say canon compliance adheres to everything stated in the pages of the books (that includes the epilogue). As far as JKR's author interviews go, yeah, they have some value. But they're not canon so everyone gets to pick and choose which info they wanna keep and which gets stuffed into, "Not in the books! Doesn't count!"
2. Has fanfic influenced your writing? If yes, was it a particular story you can name for us?
I remember reading Cassandra Claire's works and wishing I could write like that. There were elements I did try to emulate, such as the rhythms of her prose, and some I looked at and didn't even try to go for 'cos I didn't think I could, such as the way she manages to cliffhanger her chapters in Draco Dormiens. I'm more character-driven than plot-driven; I remain envious of those authors like Cassie Claire who can do both.
I'm also in love with Nimori's writing, partly because the concept of "too weird to be written" does not seem to exist in her head. She takes the kinkiest concepts, the kind I would have sworn are too personal and too strange to be made into coherent prose, and crafts amazing drool-worthy stories for them.
3. What element(s) about the relationship between Snape and Harry do you find most intriguing?
Are you kidding? Schoolboy and schoolmaster; y'need more than that?
4. How would Severus Snape find your team mascot most useful?
*sigh* Let's all say it together, shall we: Potions ingredients, yes, thank you. No, let me get a little more creative: he would say Dragons are good for scaring the stuffing out of precocious arrogant little fourth-year putting-name-in-Goblet-no-matter-what-he-d
5. What would you consider your greatest strength in writing?
I like to think it's that I am pigheaded enough to assume that everyone likes what I like and so I write to please myself. And so I present it as "Here's something everyone likes, right?" And at least some people are willing to be convinced that they do.
6. Is there something your beta(s) constantly catch you doing?
Yes, but I won't say what they are. Don't point out your flaws! There are plenty of people who will do that for ya even without yer askin'. ^_^
7. Have you ever collaborated/partnered with another author or artist? If yes, please describe it for us. If no, would you consider it?
How on earth do authors collaborate? Don't the collaborators fight over how every word and plot point should go? Shouldn't the style shifts be obvious to the reader? Okay, obviously some people accomplish it, but to me it's like asking me, "Have you ever chewed your food with your eyes instead of your mouth?" Wha?
8. Now that canon is complete, do you find it more freeing or less when it comes to writing or enjoying fanfic/fanart?
Canon shmanon! There are some damned creative people out there who've never let canon stop their fun. *hugs her stubborn wonderful fandom*
9. In your opinion, what kind of kink/theme does fandom need more of?
Flogging. Shipboard flogging.
10. How do you feel about participating in this year's Snarry Games?
Intimidated. Challenged. Utterly honored to be a part of such remarkable company.
Thank you, amanuensis1! Stay tuned for more Champion Interviews and Opening Games Crack!Art!
