CHAMPION INTERVIEW # 14 - Jadzialove!
Your Name: jadzialove
Archive link(s): Jadzialove @ Skyhawke
Your Team: Dragons!
1. 'Canon compliant' is a hot button topic in Harry Potter fandom (thanks to all the 'After-Book Specials' JKR is hosting). What is your definition?
Those 'After-Book Specials' are incredibly self-indulgent, and as far as I'm concerned, they are no more canon than if I had posted them. If JKR wants to dictate the fate of every single character, then she had better get on with another book series. Otherwise, shut up. Oddly enough, I didn't hate the epilogue, but I do tend to ignore things in canon that I don't care for—Snape's obsessive, decade's old "love" for Lily, for example—or things that are inconvenient for my purposes. What's that you say? Snape is dead? Ha! I'm not convinced. And that's the point of fanfiction, at least to me.
2. Has fanfic influenced your writing? If yes, was it a particular story you can name for us?
Fanfic is my writing. Before I found it, I used to write these atrocious, mostly lesbian stories, which inevitably involved magic or powers of some sort, way before Harry Potter was but a glimmer in JKR's eye. My writing has improved a hundredfold since then, in my opinion, anyway—I certainly don't cringe the way I do when I stumble across one of those old attempts.
As for a particular story… that's a toughy. I think instead that it might have been particular authors, rather than specific stories. I'd name names, but one or two of them happen to be on that other team. The biggest influence, I'd have to admit, has been my friend Cyn (joanwilder). I wouldn't have written a word of Snarry without her. Actually, I can't imagine doing any of this without her. I would, of course, but it wouldn't be half as much fun.
3. What element(s) about the relationship between Snape and Harry do you find most intriguing?
Hmmm. Well, I tried to answer this very question once before on my IJ, and my brain exploded. I'm willing to give it another try.
I've always enjoyed stories of hate turned to love. And the snark. Oh, how I love the snark. But it's not really that simple, is it? I'll admit that I was completely and utterly horrified the first time I realized that people were putting Harry and Snape together. It wasn't until I'd run out of slash to read (What? I was unemployed at the time.), and finally dipped into the Snarry pot, desperate and, admittedly, a bit curious. That was several years ago, and I never looked back. The most intriguing part about them to me is the enormous challenge in making the ship plausible. JKR clearly didn't like Snape, she didn't want any of us to like him either, but her mistake to that end was in making him so very complex, so compelling, so completely shades of gray. When Snarry is done well, getting such a difficult person to believably feel something other than loathing for Harry (and manage to walk the fine line between plausible and ridiculous), it is so incredibly satisfying as to be indescribable. I don't know if I've hit that pinnacle myself, but I always strive for it, and find it insanely delicious when I read it.
Course, the smut is yummy too.
4. How would Severus Snape find your team mascot most useful?
I imagine he'd find a dragon useful for keeping the neighborhood brats off of his lawn. And other undesirables from his doorstep.
5. What would you consider your greatest strength in writing?
I would very much hope that anyone reading my work would say that it's characterization, but being my own harshest critic, I'm entirely without objectivity on the subject.
6. Is there something your beta(s) constantly catch you doing?
I have a tendency to leave out words, which my brain very unhelpfully fills in while I'm doing the pre-beta read through. On occasion, I will do something so bizarre, without any recollection of having done it, I have to wonder if little elves aren't messing with my files while I sleep. It could happen.
7. Have you ever collaborated/partnered with another author or artist? If yes, please describe it for us. If no, would you consider it?
I once wrote a story based on tripperfunster's art, but never have written a true collaborative effort. I certainly would consider it.
8. Now that canon is complete, do you find it more freeing or less when it comes to writing or enjoying fanfic/fanart?
Bah. Canon, schmanon. Okay, that's not entirely true—I do like a story that's canon-compliant to a degree. But in my opinion, fanfiction exists solely to alter or expand canon, so the end of new canon really has no bearing on what I read or write. There's still so much out there to be told.
9. In your opinion, what kind of kink/theme does fandom need more of?
I can't get enough first-time fic, but I think that goes back to the 'hate turned to love' scenario. Honestly, though, I think there is a great variety available out there, so I'll just be greedy and say more of EVERYTHING. More Snarry smut!
10. How do you feel about participating in this year's Snarry Games?
I'm thrilled, honored and terrified in equal measure. Go Dragons!
