CHAMPION INTERVIEW # 12 - Svartalfur!
Your Name: Anders Svartalfurinn (svartalfur)
Archive link(s): My stories at IJ, at Walking the Plank and at Skyehawke.
Your Team: DRAGON! ROOOAAAAAARRRRRRRRRR
1. 'Canon compliant' is a hot button topic in Harry Potter fandom (thanks to all the 'After-Book Specials' JKR is hosting). What is your definition?
Canon are the seven novels. Nothing else. Full stop.
I consider any bezoar, anti-venom or blood replenishing potion related (or any other form actually) form of Snape survival as CCC (completely canon compliant). No burial, no portrait, no ghost!
I don't think that the story has to center around Snape's survival either. It's sufficient if his survival of the Shrieking Shack attack is mentioned in one way or the other.
2. Has fanfic influenced your writing? If yes, was it a particular story you can name for us?
Hell, yes!
I remember having a huge aha experience when reading cluegirl's Everybody's Fool. Sex scenes are all about characterization for me, and Cluegirl's fic demonstrates how it is done. When I'm grown up, I want to become just like her (or like sansa1970, themostepotente, loupgarou1750, to name but a few of my "role model" authors). (A fellow dragon, one of those phoenixes, and a mod - am I not just a diplomat?)
There are so many more. Fandom is full of talented writers. If you want to see who else influenced me, go to my Snarry Recs page. (Or to my Various Pairings & Gen Recs page, but that's off topic here. ;D)
3. What element(s) about the relationship between Snape and Harry do you find most intriguing?
Harry's your average guy for me. Yes, I know he's a hero, but he's a kind of next door hero, a hero in shabby clothes. He's not the most talented, nor is he the cleverest or the most beautiful. He's warm-hearted, though, and a wonderful friend. Snape, on the other hand, is special. He's ugly and nasty and a genius. He can be a diva or a criminal. There are many things he can do, but he'll never be average. There couldn't be two people more different. I love to see them dance around each other, struggle with their differences and their attraction, be it mutual or one-sided. They have a lot in common, too, very true, but to find out about that, they have to go a long way. I love to accompany them on their journey.
4. How would Severus Snape find your team mascot most useful?
Snape's a chain smoker, you know. He'd carry a pocket size Hebridian Black around with him as a lighter. You say that he could use his wand? Complete and utter rubbish. There are situations when a wizard needs his wand and still wants to light a fag. From time to time, Snape catches himself stroking the obsidian scales and thinking of Harry's raven hair. Don't tell anyone!
5. What would you consider your greatest strength in writing?
The love for details. It's a two-sided sword, though. Describing the ripping up of a paper phoenix in an important dialogue scene is certainly fun, but too many details can be easily boring. I'm still fighting for balance.
6. Is there something your beta(s) constantly catch you doing?
Adding far too many commas and adverbs. Something else? Sometimes turns my sentence structure as German out. Nah, it's really not that bad, but it's a constant fight, and I can't thank my betas enough for bearing with me.
7. Have you ever collaborated/partnered with another author or artist? If yes, please describe it for us. If no, would you consider it?
No. And yes. I'd certainly love to do it. I've seen wonderful collabs around lately, and they made my mouth water for more.
8. Now that canon is complete, do you find it more freeing or less when it comes to writing or enjoying fanfic/fanart?
It's pretty much the same for me, now that the first shock about DH is over. I must say, I could have lived without DH. Since it's out there and can't be changed anymore, though, it's freeing to know that canon is closed and that Snape and Harry belong to us now, to fandom.
9. In your opinion, what kind of kink/theme does fandom need more of?
Good writing. Great art. Exciting new approaches to classic themes. We have all of that, but there's never enough, never. Long live teh Snarry!
10. How do you feel about participating in this year's Snarry Games?
Absolutely, completely, utterly DELIGHTED! ROOOAAAAARRRRRRRRR
