Also? Who better than a man with a "saving people thing" to pair up with someone like Snape, who needs saving (whether he wants to admit it or not).
I think that's key, Beth. And it seems that these 'saving' people are particularly drawn to the individuals who a) don't realize they need saving, and b) will do their best to drag the 'saving' person down with them. Which is even better fodder for Snarry writers.
