Walking the Plank celebrates its anniversary soon!
This theme of fire this year has me thinking. Two years ago, we were working madly at this time of year to create a lasting archive after the implosion of Detention, a much-loved Snarry site. With lots of hours, some stellar efforts, and the miracle of compromise, a new Walking the Plank was born from the ashes of Detention.
Walking the Plank was originally a small site, with an interesting collection of stories. It wasn't updated for years, and when Detention asked if WTP would move its fics to Detention, they gladly agreed. When Detention went down with no notice, lots of great Snarry disappeared, including the fics that had been on WTP well before Detention was a twinkle in its mod's eye.
Those of us who worked on the rebirth of the site initially dreamt of putting together an archive where the authors didn't need to fear the deletion of their archive and stories; where volunteers could run with a well-organized infrastructure; and where one person didn't make the decisions for everyone else, but everyone had a voice.
As a matter of fact, djin7 created the Snarry Games initially as a celebration of the rebirth of Walking the Plank, and a wish to share the joy of Snarry. The structure has served it well, and WTP will be up nearly twice as long as Detention when it celebrates its 2 year anniversary on Valentine's Day, February 14th.
However, because it relies on volunteers, WTP also relies on new members joining as well. Primarily, we want to be able to work through the queue more quickly, and continue to grow the site technically. While we are still stable, the more people we have involved, the happier we are!
Please consider volunteering at Walking the Plank if you enjoy the site. We are looking for people who enjoy designing skins, working on the forum, or are familiar with E-fic for our tech team. We are also always looking for new mods with strong grammar skills, because we get a large number of fics and art every week. Speed and quality are essential to our success. We hope that if we double our mod squad, we could help more with uploading, and help forstall any technical problems for those unfamiliar with the system. Since we make major decisions by committee, it is vital that people who have a vested interest in Snarry participate, so we get the best site possible.
If you are interested in volunteering, please visit us on the WTP forum. Everyone is welcome, and your unique skills will be appreciated!
The Snarry Games and Walking the Plank have always had a symbiotic relationship, and always will. We were born at the same time, and for the same reason: preserving the Snarry for those who love it. Whether you visit one or both, whether you read or volunteer, we appreciate you. The same fire burns within us all.
