Severus was growing quite concerned.

Harry, on the other hand, seemed entirely unworried. “When she’s ready,” he said, steadying her on her toy broom and watching her play.

Severus didn’t see how he could be so calm.

The day she turned three, Lily finally spoke.

In paragraphs.

Of sixty and seventy words.

In which she expressed exasperation at the inadequacy of spoken language.

He asked her why she hadn’t spoken before, and she scowled, his expression on her dainty features. “Father. I did. In your head. You didn’t listen.”

Severus gaped, then looked at Harry, who shrugged. “Thought you knew.”

"I don’t understand. What exactly do-"

"Shhh" Harry murmured as he gently removed Severus' robes and stepped out of his own. The older man blinked when Harry pulled him under the covers and wrapped him in a tight embrace. Confusion lined his face.

"So, you don't want to..."

"Tonight, this is all I want".

Snape's eyes closed as warmth flooded through him, an involuntary response to Harry's touch and the foreign sensation of being... held. He flinched but Harry squeezed him tighter.

"Just let me." he whispered.

And curled safely in the boy’s arms, Severus decided that tonight, perhaps he would.
