“There are many different types of courage in this world, Harry,” Dumbledore had once said.
Harry always wondered if Dumbledore had known what would happen after he defeated Voldemort.
The squeal of his daughter as she ran towards his mate brought Harry out of his daydream.
Severus, his face transformed by a smile, had his arms open, and as she ran into them the two toppled heavily onto the grass.
As Harry walked towards them, it struck him how courageous his husband was. Severus had resisted the pull of the dark side for decades, only to bravely succumb to love.

Harry’s eyes blurred with tears as he stared into Severus’ face.
“Why’d you do it?” he cried, arms wrapped tightly around himself as if he would fly apart otherwise.
Severus sighed, looking down at him.
“I had to,” he replied sharply. “We all had roles to play. Mine was to have the courage to do whatever it took to get you to do what you were born to do.”
Harry shook with sobs, and Severus rolled his eyes.
“What would you have had me do, Harry? “ he asked more gently.
“Live,” Harry said, tearful eyes gazing at the portrait. “Live.”

They sighed as they closed the door.
Minerva had given them permission, but they were both nervous. Neither had visited his portrait since that fateful night.
Stepping quietly over to the picture, they stood there holding hands, both gathering courage before looking up.
The old man was snoring gently, his chest rising and falling rhythmically.
Severus started to turn away, but paused when Harry tugged.
One bright blue eye cracked open.
Severus’ breath caught as he looked at his ex-mentor.
In an unmistakable gesture of benediction, Dumbledore winked at both men.
“Blessed be,” he mouthed, closing his eyes once more.

“It’s wrong, Harry,” Hermione said, lips pressed together firmly.
Ron, of course, echoed her words, to no one’s surprise. Hermione’s lapdog, Harry thought bitterly.
McGonagall wasn’t much better.
“He is incapable of that level of caring, Harry,” she warned.
Harry shrugged. And even when Remus and Tonks and Molly came to him, he smiled politely and then went home to him.
Soon, it became a joke between them.
“Who tried to get you to leave me today?” he would ask, and Harry would laugh and tell him.
“Will we never have anyone’s benediction?” Harry sighed.
“Just our own,” Severus replied.
