Challenge: #35: Anticipation
A/N: A Christmas-y double drabble. Enjoy.
Severus told Harry, in all sincerity, that being together was all the Christmas gift he wanted. But Harry said he'd give Severus the world if he could, and Severus' heart raced.
The night before Christmas he hardly slept. As a child he'd never had much reason to look forward to Christmas. Harry had helped change that. And this year, Severus knew something big was in store.
He couldn't picture the gift itself, exactly, but he could imagine Harry's puppyish joy in giving it, and his own happiness on accepting it. The two thoughts together kept him awake half the night.
2.
Severus watched, breathless, as Harry reached for the last gift under the tree. "For me," Harry said, tickled.
He unwrapped a small square box. "What's this?" he laughed, disbelieving. "Finally going to make an honest man of me?"
Severus rolled his eyes. "Actually . . . yes."
Harry opened the box and blinked down at the antique silver band, up at Severus, back down again. He nodded. "Okay. Yes."
Severus exhaled deeply as he slipped the ring onto Harry's finger. It hadn't been exactly as he'd imagined, and the anticipation had nearly killed him--but Severus had got the only gift he'd wanted.
