Add to Memories Tell a Friend

Here's my (non-funny but timely!) entry for May snarc, Snape in Love, entitled "Half-Bloods"

Yes, young Snape was in love with Spock. Who wasn't?

After I finished this, I realized it was highly unlikely Snape ever saw a color television. Oh, well.

Lack of technique, and Spock's full hand, here:

Reminder - Literary Snape

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

I recently finished The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and was inspired to quickly draw Snape in the scene where Huck watches the Duke and the King practice the sword fight in Richard III. Here it is, serving as a mid-contest reminder:

Now with ArtPad, to see how a real non-artist does it.

The text: It didn't take me long to make up my mind that these liars warn't no kings nor dukes at all, but just low-down humbugs and frauds. But I never said nothing, never let on; kept it to myself; it's the best way; then you don't have no quarrels, and don't get into no trouble.

Literary Snape ends May 2. There are already some great entries, but please don't hesitate to put Snape in any book you want. Because if you're a true Snape obsessive, you'll even find him described in Huckleberry Finn.

April SNARC: Literary Snape

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

Thanks to [info]hirschkuh for a fun contest. There was a abundance of fantastic entries. I don't envy her having to choose one as a winner.

On to the next contest!

Severus has at least one room lined with books at Spinner's End. Are these all treatises on potions and the Dark Arts, quaint and curious volumes of forgotten lore? Or does he have a collection of favorite fiction he can lose himself in when his multiple responsibilities get too tough?

What would Severus read? What characters can you imagine Severus interacting with? What literary character does Snape remind you of? What story would Severus become engaged in?

That is the snarc contest for April: Snape in a work of literature. (I was going to limit this to children's books, then I considered all the Mr. Darcy Snapes I'd be missing... *swoon*... and changed my mind. Note: Mr. Darcy Snapes are highly encouraged.)

The contest will last until May 2. The usual rules apply. You don't have to be a great artist to enter. Stick figures are love. The funniest entry will get a prize, the nature of which has yet to be determined.

Here's an ArtPad drawing done for Lewis Carroll's birthday to perhaps inspire you (done with a mouse, although it's so ancient I can't remember how -- here's a link -- I was looking at another drawing, of course):

Have fun!

March 2009: Snape and Voldemort

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

Voldemort and Snape, along with Dumbledore, are characters given the "flashback" treatment in Rowlings' books, important enough to merit a backstory, but ultimately only a backdrop to Harry Potter's journey. Rowling reveals the bulk of their stories through passive devices, the Pensieve memory for the Slytherins and the tell-all book for the Gryffindor, thus limiting the character representations to her hero's somewhat unimaginative and unquestioning point of view. This means that for Voldemort, we are left with a psychopathic villain who has few dimensions. For Dumbledore, we are left with a complete reevaluation of his character in the last book. For Snape, for whom the author seemed to have little interest beyond use as a plot device in DH, we are left with many unanswered questions.

For example, we do not know how Snape was taken in by Voldemort. Snape warned that those who wear their hearts on their sleeves are easy prey for the Dark Lord. He did not say what sort of predator Voldemort was, however, or precisely how he became Voldemort's prey.

This is a sort-of multi-purpose post.

1) Very late birthday greetings for [info]sylvanawood (I still can't figure out Photoshop)
2) Severus' special Valentine's Day treat
3) Entry into [info]protowilson's current contest, Snape's Guilty Pleasure

His guilty pleasure is texting [info]sylvanawood!

Yeah, that's about it.

Comics rec!

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Sydpad on LJ has not been creating a series of comics for some time now, called "Trains in this Country." Here is a masterlist of all postings. The series is funny, sad, intriguing, and action-packed. She also draws a fabulous Snape! She aims to finish the story today, for some reason known only to her.

ETA: The journal will be friends-locked shortly, so see it now!

October Challenge: Severus and the Marauders

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

I am a bit hesitant to post this here. If you don't like relentlessly negative views of the Harry Potter books, or if you have a low tolerance for extremely lateral thinking, then you should probably not

Title: Happy Birthday, Severus
Artist: [info]the_bitter_word
Rating: G
Media: Micrografx Picture Publisher (from 1995!) on an endlessly crashing computer
Recipient: [info]geri_chan
Notes:  This is an illustration of [info]geri_chan's delightful short story, "Happy Birthday, Severus."  It is a pop-up book, but I still have to print out the pieces on medium-weight paper and assemble them, so I just put the pictures together as they would look, minus the 3-D effects.  These are screen shots.  The real files are huge.

March Challenge -- Snape and Dumbledore

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

JK Rowling has said that Albus Dumbledore was "the epitome of goodness." In the most recent interview as of this writing, she said he was "an innately good man."

An extreme minority report – just so you know )
