I didn't have time this month to do a full essay, but here are a few thoughts about Snape and his fears...

I know it's shocking, but I'm reccing something other than a Snupin for a change! ;-) A friend steered me towards this fic, an older one written for the 1996 Percy Ficathon:

My OTP is Snape/Lupin, but as I already wrote a Snupin ship essay a couple of years ago, I won't reiterate all the same points, but will discuss the ship more briefly, take a look at a few other Snape slash pairings, and discuss how my perceptions of Snape slash changed with the release of Deathly Hallows.

lupin_snape is currently having a rec event for the month of August: members have signed up to rec Snupin fics every day this month, (I'll be reccing this Sunday on the 9th). There's been a lot of interesting debate about the flying issue: did Voldemort teach Snape to fly, as McGonagall assumes, or was it Snape who taught Voldemort, as many Snape fans have suggested?

Snape and werewolves--as a Snupin shipper, this is a subject dear to my heart! I think that there are a couple of different ways you can look at Snape relating to werewolves...

I proposed the Squib Snape challenge, but to be honest, I find it very hard to picture Snape as a Squib. Maybe that was why I suggested it, to get other people's viewpoints on the subject. It's just that, for me, magic seems such an intrinsic part of Snape that it's difficult to separate the two.

There are a lot of unanswered questions about Snape and Voldemort...was Snape really the Dark Lord's right hand man, and if so, was he always, or did this only occur after Voldemort's return post-GoF? And how did Voldemort manage to recruit Snape and the other Death Eaters in the first place? I've seen it pointed out in other posts that what we see of Voldemort doesn't paint him as a particularly cunning or charismatic leader. It seems that aside from Bellatrix, most of the Death Eaters are serving him mainly out of fear.

So is Professor Snape sexy? I suppose it depends on whom you ask. (Canon) Harry would say no, as would the Marauders, but judging by the amount of Snape fanfic out there pairing him up with various canon characters and OCs of both genders, a lot of readers would reply with a resounding "yes!"

The stanadard cliché is that Snape's hair is "greasy," due to the way that Harry describes it in the books. However, this seems at odds with the other cliché of Snape as the "Slytherin Sex God". The latter is usually thought of as a fanon invention, since Snape is ugly in canon...or is he?

I wasn't able to come up with an original fic for our favorite Potions Master's birthday, so I decided to rec a series of wonderful birthday ficlets written by someone else. (The pairing isn't listed in the headings, but as they were originally posted on lupin_snape , it can be assumed to be Snape/Lupin ^_^):

The first is a really lovely look at Snape, seen through Draco's eyes as a child, and eventually as an adult, as he and Neville conspire to give Snape a happy birthday. The second story shows the same events, viewed from Snape's perspective. The two prequels show Draco and Neville's manipulations, as they arrange to have Lupin and Snape meet on the latter's birthday.

There are so many Snupin Santa entries that I haven't been able to keep with all of them, but here a few favorites of the ones I've read that I'd like to share with the group:

A young half-blood wizard with a miserable home life in a Muggle neighborhood is excited to be going to Hogwarts, a place where he feels like he'll be able to fit in for the first time in his life. He encounters an arrogant bully along the way, and is determined to be Sorted into a different House than the bully.

From the above description, you might assume that the boy is Harry Potter, but you would be wrong--it's Severus Snape. Of course, in Snape's case, I believe that he had already decided to go into Slytherin, but meeting James on the train only reinforced that desire and further prejudiced him against Gryffindor. Even Lily's being Sorted into Gryffindor wasn't enough to tempt Snape into asking the Hat to put him there. In any case, the same general description fits both Harry and Snape remarkably well. In my essay on Snape and the Marauders, I wrote:

For once I am *gasp* not recommending a Snupin fic! Today's rec is a lovely Snuna drabble that really captures the essence of both characters very well. It starts with a Marriage Law premise, where Snape and Luna have been forced to get married. Snape pities Luna for having to marry him, but Luna sees things in another light entirely. Snape is portrayed with a convincing, if painful, sense of self-loathing that makes his final moment of astonished joy all the more satisfying. Luna is...well, Luna, delightfully whimsical, practical, and tender.
