Snupin art/fic rec, and recs from the snarry_games

Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry
It's been a quiet week (or maybe it just seems that way becasue I've been a little unwell.) Here are some snarry_games recs, and a rec for a now-completed snupin multi-chaptered illustrated story that is guaranteed to make you smile - the story is wonderful, and the art is great (points to pretty icon).

FIC FROM THE SNARRY_GAMES:

>> Sweet Surrender by [info]gin_tonic.
Rating: nc-17
Warning/s: minor character death (not Snape or Hary)
Summary: More than a year has passed since Harry left the Wizarding world. Now he's known as the Pie Maker, but his quiet life is about to be disrupted by an unexpected visitor and a murder.

Sweet Surrender is a well-integrated fusion withPushing Daisies, very well-written, with the two 'verses blending harmoniously. You don't need to be familiar with Pushing Daisies to enjoy this story - it's a wonderful read, with a lively and interesting plot. The romance is lovely with a touch of angst, and the UST... the UST is amazing. Don't miss out on this one - you'll love it!

>> Timely Actions by [info]psyfic.
Raiting: nc-17
Warning/s: some very mild SS/LE and HP/HG (if you squint) on the road to SS/HP, de-aged Snape (he is 17 for the sexy Snarry bits, but if that is a problem, you can ignore the epilogue -- it's not needed for the full story), wet-dreams, a touch of humiliation, wanking, h/c, angst, bj, fingering, face shot, bottom!Snape. This story is loosely canon compliant except for Rowling's crapilogue epilogue.
Summary: First, Severus had to make sure Harry died. Now he has to make sure Harry lives.

Time travel stories have a tendency to become incredibly complicated - what with paradoxes, attempting to avoid paradoxes, creating paradoxes through attempting to avoid them... Odogoddess' contribution to the snarry_games is blessedly free of all the tangles and twists - while reading it, the focus is on the enjoyable story, not the entanglements. There is a newly created character who is a joy to read; old Snape; young Snape; a wonderful Hermione and an earnestly sweet Harry. And thoroughly delightful sex. One to be enjoyed!

>> Seer Divine by [info]shadowess.
Rating: nc-17
Warning/s: major character death (not snarry); attempted rape; violence; AU
Summary: In Viking-Age Sweden, Seidhr magic was usually passed down from mother to daughter but since Harry was an only child, he became his mother's apprentice. Harry must now raise power for a ritual and turns to his other tutor, Severus Snape, to help him.

I do love a story with a well-researched historical background. The snarry games have produced some lovely literary and/or historical crossovers this year, including Seer Divine, a snarry set in Viking-age Sweden. Seidhr is the name for the magic practiced here, a woman's magic grounded in seasonal and natural power; Shadowess cleverly integrates the snarry story into the seidhr of the Viking times. The only complaint I might make is a probably irrelevant to most readers, but the geek in me would have loved to see Shadowess' research references. Do read Seer Divine, it is a fabulously entertaining read.

SNUPIN FIC AND ART REC:

>> Red Serpent by [info]skitty_kat. (Link to skitty's Red Serpent tags.)
Rating: R
Warning/s: death, destruction, sex, violence, torture and a gratuitous explosion or two. Yikes.
Summary: Remus Lupin is a spy, one of British Intelligence's finest, and this may be his most deadly mission yet. Armed with only his native wit and courage and assisted by the enigmatic and magnetic Severus Snape he must penetrate deep into Communist Russia to bring down the powerful Lord Voldemort.
Status: Complete (12/12).

You may be familiar with [info]skitty_kat's art, often featuring Snape or the Snupin pairing. I love her Snape and his marvelous profile. His moods are conveyed subtly, through narrowed eyes, his stance or the angle he holds his head. He's beautiful, but not in a fashion model way. And skitty's Snape nearly always makes me smile - sometimes for no better reason than because he's being sullen or uncooperative. Who knows why Snape being obnoxious is so appealing? But skitty_kat's Snape is enormousy appealing.

Skitty_kat's fiction tends to subvert its own genre - a faithful pastiche evolving into parody. Red Serpent, while following the sub-genre of an Ian Fleming "James Bond" spy/suspense novel is similary subversive, replacing familiar tropes with unexpected elements. So glamourous sophisticated super-spy Remus Lupin, definitely has his unsophisticated, non-glamourous moments; although his prior successes may be attributed to his cool, smooth demeanor and lightning-sharp wits, the Remus we see is often out of his depth, utterly raw and transparent, and played like a puppet by the villians (and by Snape). But he handles the end of the mission with James Bond super-spy style. And the love interest, the beauty in distress whose loyalties and agenda are suspect, is none other than a sulky, ugly, bitter, greasy-haired, cynical, unpleasant and utterly appealing Severus Snape. Whose loyalties and agenda are suspect.

Red Serpent is set in a Fleming-esque Russia prior to glasnost and perestroika. Glamourous super-spy, Remus Lupin, is sent to investigate the disappearance of fellow-spy Sirius Black. Black's mission was to investigate the arch-villian Tom Riddle, and to explore the possibility that one of his disillusioned followers, Severus Snape, could be persuaded to defect. While he was on the mission and negotiating with Snape, Black has disappeared, and Remus is sent to investigate Snape's involvement in his disappearance and to attempt to successfully complete Black's mission. And of course, Lupin has no idea he is about to enter territory dangerous to him personally, and that his own orientation may be subverted.

Red Serpent is great fun to read, a perfect combination of humour, romance and super-spy adventure. Recently completed, each chapter has brilliant illustrations, and there's even a "Dvd extras" bonus chapter. I highly recommend this one! Read and enjoy!

ART FROM THE SNARRY_GAMES:

>> PokerFace by [info]pennswood.
Rating: pg
Warning/s: Star Trek cross-over
Summary: At their latest session of naughty wizard poker, Severus took shameless advantage of Harry's sci-fi fetish.

Love this picture so much! It captures the essence of every fantasy/thought I might have had about similarities between Snape and Spock after seeing the new Star Trek movie.

  • *blushes and giggles like a maniac*

    That's a lot of rec.

I had to look up perestroika.
    • It's only fitting that a long fic gets a long rec, no?
Hope I had the correct spelling for perestroika *sudden doubt*...
It woud be good if the fic received more attention, too.
      Cheers.

One thing I regretted about Seer Divine, 'cause I'm picky like that, was that all the names were modern. Some of them translate quite well. Harry would be Heinrekr, Ronald is Rognvaldr, Draco (if he'd appeared) would be Ormr, and, uh, Severus Snape = Glúmr the Shameful. So maybe untranslated is best. Oh well, off to read the rest!

    -L
    • That's a great idea about the names, although, you know, I could live without "Glúmr the Shameful". *g*
    • You know I actually seriously thought about translating the characters names, but I've found that it sometimes gets confusing and pushes people out of the fic. I've read fics where you need to keep referring to the character list. *shrugs* but I do agree that the translated names would have added a more traditional feel to the story.
      btw Draco=Ormr ftw! *LOL*
      • If the characters names are too different fron the original names, it gets distracting, I agree. But if the intiial letters of the name are the same, so you don't have to keep wondering who the character is, it might work. I think it's best if the story can flow, without the reader haven't to stop and think about it too much.

Btw, hope you weren't offended by the geek in me comment I made in the review above - I really am a geek, and love reference notes!
        • Oh not offended at all. I was actually thinking about posting a reference note after the Games are done. I'll send you the link to it.
Now, most of the knowledge was gleaned from 10 years of actually practicing the religion ^_^ but I have numerous books and websites that I'm sure will sate your geekness =)
