SNARC August: Equine Pleasures

Ahem. O.K. Had to keep it clean, per the rules of the contest, so no wand jokes a la Daniel Radcliffe, here. And Severus remains fully clad. And see how soft-hearted Severus is, to rescue an innocent animal from the terrible fate to which Harry Potter would have subjected the poor creature.

severus snape,snarc

Well, you know, Sev's got his own saving-people thing, whenever he can, and apparently he's developed a saving-animals thing, too, as long as they aren't potions ingredients or annoying little toads brought into the classroom by dunderheaded students.

The man's a marshmallow, I tell ya, one of those marshmallows that's been held over the flames too long and has a crusty, burnt exterior--but the inside is pure goo.

Hey, it's canon. Even if the horse ain't.
  • Awww...Sev's pet horse is adorable! I've always had a soft spot for horses--I read every book I could find on them when I was a kid, fiction and non-fiction, and I still have my collection of model horses.

And I do see my fanon Snape as having a soft spot for stray creatures, although of course he would never ever admit it.

Plus, the whole Equus connection totally cracks me up! ^_^
    • Yay! I'm glad you caught the Equus connection. That was the whole point. ;-) I hoped I made it obvious enough without spelling it out.

And I think I remember you writing a story in which Remus picked up a stray dog, or something, and Severus of course was all grumpy about it, but behind Remus' back started softening up towards the little critter. ;-)

I wasn't a big horse fanatic as a kid, but I do remember reading the Trixie Belden series of books, and that she rode horses a lot.
  • Well, with that little bump on its forehead, it could be a unicorn, maybe a young one (the golden mane) that's just lost it's parent. However, it is said in legend that only a virgin can tame the unicorn. So that means our Sev ... better not go there! I admit to liking Sex!God Snape fics way too much in to countenance him as Virgin!Snape.

Or it could be that it's a Thestral, and it's got a cold, so Snape has wrapped a yellow wool comforter around it's sore throat. I could see Sev with a Thestral as a pet.

    • Heh. That "little bump on its forehead" is the back of its ear on the far side of its head! And the "yellow wool comforter" is the horse's blond mane. I based the picture on the photos of Dan Radcliffe in Equus. I'm definitely not one of the professional artists on this group, in case it hasn't been obvious. ;-)

So... no unicorn, and Severus is definitely NOT a virgin at this point in his life. ;-) I tend to think he had his first sexual experience in his early-to-mid twenties; possibly his late teens, but I think he'd be a bit shy about it, so more likely a bit of a late bloomer--but not so late as to still be a virgin ca. age 40. That is rather rare, literature notwithstanding. :-S

  • ADORABLE! I am totally horse fixated right now, as my Snarry Games piece includes horses. It's been great to work on them. So, I can understand Sev wanting to spirit away Harry's horse.

But, will he ride him naked?
    • Awesome. We seem to have some kind of synchronicity when it comes to fic and art. ;-) And yeah, Sev seems to like the horse for it's own sake, not just to rescue it from Harry's ice pick or whatever it was. The horse is probably the most intelligent companionship he finds at Hogwarts.

But, will he ride him naked?

Maybe outside the PG-13 boundaries of SNARC.... o_O
  • Love the horse's smirk, what a pair they make. Poor Severus has to go to great lengths to find a creature that is not enthralled by the great HP.
    • Thank you! They do seem to be very companionable, don't they?

Poor Severus has to go to great lengths to find a creature that is not enthralled by the great HP.

Heh. :-D When the great HP started wielding that pointy object, I think that cured the horse of any potential enthrallment. Smart horse likes smart human much better.
  • Simon and Garfunkel and Snape

I don't think you realize just how terrifically--and terrifyingly--appropriate this picture is. Severus reminds me of Boxer in the novel Animal Farm. He was the loyal, obedient plow horse who worked and worked until he literally collapsed from exhaustion. The pigs told the other animals they were going to send Boxer to the hospital to recuperate, but they really shipped him off to the horse slaughterer. By the time Boxer realized what was happening, it was too late to save himself. The pigs covered up his death by saying he died after two days in the hospital, after receiving every possible care. (No, none of the pigs were named Dumbledore.)

That also ties in with the Simon and Garfunkel song, "The Boxer." It has amazingly Snapish lyrics:

I am just a poor boy, and my story's seldom told
I have squandered my resistance for a pocketful of mumbles
    Such are promises
All lies and jest, still the man he hears what he wants to hear
    And disregards the rest

When I left my home and my family, I was no more than a boy
    In the company of strangers
In the quiet of the railway station, running scared
Laying low, seeking out the poorer quarters where the ragged people go
Looking for the places only they would know

Asking only workman's wages, I come looking for a job,
    But I get no offers
Just a come-on from the whores on 7th Avenue
I do declare, there were times when I was so lonesome
    I took some comfort there

And I'm laying out my winter clothes and wishing I was gone, going home
Where the New York City winters aren't bleeding me, leading me to go home

In the clearing stands a boxer and a fighter by his trade
And he carries the reminders of every glove that laid him down or cut him
Till he cried out, in his anger and his shame,
"I am leaving, I am leaving," but the fighter still remains

"Bridge Over Troubled Water" and "Kathy's Song" are also very appropriate, particularly the last two verses of the latter:

And so you see, I have come to doubt
All that I once held as true
    I stand alone, without belief
The only truth I know is you

And as I watch the drops of rain
Weave their weary paths and die
I know that I am like the rain
There but for the grace of you go I
    • Re: Simon and Garfunkel and Snape

Talk about synchronicity: I was recently thinking about Animal Farm in connection with Severus and the Wizarding World. In this case, I was thinking how the gap between the Bad Guys and the Good Guys eventually blurred (or in this case was revealed to have been blurred all along) to the point of non-existence; the bit about, "He looked between the pigs and the men, and the men and the pigs, and couldn't tell the difference." The would-be reformers, corrupt themselves, end up taking on traits of the people they supposedly oppose as "EVIL, Sev, EVIL!" Dumbledore, of course, is a prime example, here, as you noted.

I hadn't thought so far as to make the connection between Severus and Boxer, but holy crap, it's a brilliant connection. If you are so inclined, I think an analysis comparing the WW to Animal Farm would be an excellent, thought-provoking read.

And yes, I've also thought that "The Boxer" is one of those perfect, Sev's life story in a nutshell, songs. Not sure about the lyrics from Kathy's song; whose grace and truth would Severus be referring to? Certainly Lily herself did nothing to "save" him, though the ideas he attached to Lily were the catalyst for Severus saving himself--or at least making the effort, in spite of fierce opposition every step of the way. :-P

Anyway, glad you liked my work, and thanks so much for the thoughtful commentary!
