I believe that it would please Snape so much to be able to fly, and that he is saddened because it was bought with evil and at what he believed to be harm to his soul.

I know snapes_witch already answered, so I am sure you have found it, but for the record, I have it on pages 163 and 164 of The Philosopher's Stone in the Nicolas Flamel chapter.
