A question to the SNARC players

This is meant to help me revamp the rules:

our normal, traditional monthly contest goes like this:

The winner of the past contest is the host of the next one, that means they set the theme and give out a prize if they want to, the prize is optional. In the past, the winner also chose the winner of their new contest.

Now, when we had the first contest here on snapedom, things got a bit confused. [info]severed_lies did an admirable job of starting the first contest here and introducing it, and I can't thank her enough for that, since at the time I was overwhelmed with RL, as so often.

But: the chosing of the winner got confused. She chose the winner through the number of comments on each post, which was something I wanted to use to replace the polls. Polls, however, only were used for special contests, never the regular one. Confused already? Bored? No? ok... ;)

If we keep up the chosing according to comment number, the winners lose one of their priviledges: chosing the next winner. And so I'm asking you what you prefer, you who participate regularly: do you want the *regular monthly contest* winner determined by the host or by comment numbers? Please comment here with 'host' or 'comment'. If you couldn't care less, well...

Thank you for your attention, dear Underground, and of course I'm just smoke-screening the fact that I don't have your banners ready yet. But almost... ;)
  • I think choosing by comment number is going to decrease comments. I like to, er, comment on everything, time allowing. If my commenting is going to be a vote, I should only comment on the one or ones I wish to win. Also, despite intending to comment on everything, I sort of fell down on that a little towards the end of the month as it was very busy at work, so the later entries at least were not even part of what should have been a neutral poll, at least as far as my own comments went.
    • It's a good point and one I didn't think about. I had intended the opposite with it, to increase comments, but I see now how it can easily backfire. I'll follow all of your advice and we'll let the person hosting decide.
If we need something like a poll, a seperate polling post where people comment with one word at a set time could work (which is basically like the polls, but without the graphics). If I weren't such a deeply suspicious person, I'd have bought a permanent account already, but I simply can't convince myself to make such a committment. ;) I think we can manage without.
  • Ha, I missed that winners were going to be based on number of comments, and was surprised when [info]severed_lies used that to choose the winner, although it is one way to choose. I don't think number of comments is necessarily the best way all the time, though, because it can turn into a popularity contest... you know? Especially now that comments are down all over. But I also know it's hard to decide who wins. That's why I liked polls.

I say leave it up to the person hosting the contest. If that person wants to count comments, fine. If the person wants to do a poll, fine. If the person chooses another criterion, that's fine, too.

I've been comment-shy lately, too. These things happen.

    • I had intended the comment tally for special contests only, as a replacement for the polls, but I see how it could be easily confused and misunderstood.
I can't make polls, and won't rely on outside sources. I agree with you to let the host/hostess of the contest decide how to determine the winner.
Tally-as-poll could work when there is an extra post for it, with a set date when comments are required. Posting one word surely wouldn't be that much more complicated than setting a button?
  • I would very much prefer a poll or if that is not possible the choice of the host. I'm pretty unstable in commenting others - and sometimes I want to comment everything... the same with posting the stuff - if you post you stuff on the last day - you screwed commentwise... a poll also brings all entries up front, so you have the possebility to see all toghether and equal chances for everyone - but I understand that snapedom is not only snarc and it would fill to much space to repost every entry...mmmh if you set a pistol on my chest I say: host!
    • I can't make polls since I'm not a paid member, and ij doesn't have the sponsored features Lj has. Which is fine with me, the only setback is that I can't make polls. Our permanent snapedom account for the community works differently from individual accounts: no polls. The free polls out there are didn't really convince me, and I don't want someone else doing it for the community, because I want to run it in a way *I* can manage, otherwise things get too much very quickly.
No, the reposting of every entry won't happen here, for looking up the respective entries there are tags. There are/will be tags for each individual contest (like snarc0209).
It's not so much a matter of swamping the community, but more of an intense workload. Following up on the entries, making screenshots, uploading, making the posts... it's very time-consuming and I won't start it again.
Pistol on your chest? Tut, tut... a wand, my dear, a wand...
      • you're right, its a lot of trouble and thanks for you effort to keep this community running... we dont actually need a poll...
just make an entry... "and the winner is..." listing the titles (even that is not nessesary) and everybody who wants too can comment with his favorite choice (naming the title) the host has only to count the votes,
but it would be one more entry - to much? ----
        LOL @ the wand remark / I'm such a muggle sometimes :O)
        • I think we might do it like that for special contests. For the regular monthly contest: up to the person who hosts it.
And posting a post with a link to the tagged entries would be do-able.
  • Host, definitely. I was worried that there would be equal number of comments when I went to tally them up, but luckily there was a clear 'winner' in January. I suppose only an admin can create a poll, so that might not be the best answer, though it would be the ultimate choice I would pick. Barring that, Host is probably the way to go.

The idea of using comment tallying has also kept me from responding to comments on my current entry so as not to artificially inflate the comment totals.
    • It's good that you mention that, because that would be exactly the opposite of what I wanted. I thought the idea with the comment tallying would actually increase the number of comments... but if it stops you, that's not good. We do have a good return on both entries and comments, so I think letting the host/ess decide will be the way to go.
  • Via poll is best, I think, so 'host'. I've never done a poll on IJ before. I know over on LJ you have to be a paid member (which I'm not). Is it the same here?
    • It is the same here. I'm not a paid member either, so I can't make polls. A very friendly person has given snapedom a permanent account, but asylums/communities work differently from individual accounts. I have more options with layouts and links, but no polls. The free polls out there aren't all that great.

From the tenor so far, I think letting the host of the contest decide on the winner, whichever way they want to, would be best.
