I've been awful about participating lately. One of the many things that's been eating my time has been doing Crack Broom recs on LJ for October and November, and so I thought I'd share those recs here as well, just so I'm not a *complete* lurker.
Snupin fic recs
Title: Unbroken
Author:
innerslytherin
Length/Word Count: ~9100
Pairing: SS/RL
Rating: PG-13
Summary: If someone swears an unbreakable vow, they cannot die until the vow is completed...
Author's Website:
innerslytherin's Fic Table of Contents
Why everyone should read this: There’s something particularly enjoyable about fics that take a non-canon ship through canon events and shows how those events can be interpreted in a different light. This one starts in HBP and continues through and a bit past DH doing exactly that. And, always a bonus, there’s a likable Tonks.
Title: Once More with Tango
Author:
senjy
Length/Word Count: 1180
Pairing: SS/RL
Rating: PG
Summary: Remus fears for the worst, but finds his dashing dancer is all his. Written for the Trading Places Fest, for this pic by
morbid_lizard.
Author's Website: http://www.insanejournal.com/tools/memo ries.bml?user=senjy
Why everyone should read this: It’s hot but worksafe, almost fluff but yet tackles an emotional issue that is hard to ignore post-DH and will leave you with a smile.
Title: Charming Domestic Arrangement
Author:
blpaintchart
Length/Word Count: 2417
Pairing: SS/RL
Rating: PG-15
Author's Summary: For the sickeningly talented skitty_kat's cute pic Wolfskin Rug.
Author's Website: Paint's tagged fics on IJ
Why everyone should read this: It’s hysterically funny. How Greyback met his end and how Lupin and Snape celebrated.
Title: War Wounds (WIP) part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, part 5, part 6, part 7
Author:
ellid
Length/Word Count: 23,864 so far
Pairing: SS/RL
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Two war casualties meet in St. Mungo's. Can they aid each other while the rest of the world goes on its way?
Author's Website:
ellid
Why everyone should read this: Writing post-war DH-compliant Snupin is a challenge, and this fic handles it well. Both men’s survival is explained reasonably, and their recoveries and slowly developing relationship are neither simple nor straightforward, making for a fic that is enjoyably complex and realistic.
Title: That Dear Octopus
Author:
westernredcedar
Length/Word Count: ~16,500
Pairing: SS/RL
Rating: PG
Summary: Severus has cultivated a life isolated from his family, but now his estranged mother and grandmother have rescued him from the brink of death. Oh, and then there is Remus...
Author's Website:
westernredcedar’s SS/RL and other pairing fics.
Why everyone should read this: We get glimpses, in canon, of the home life that caused Severus to become so bitter. This fic explores some of what we didn’t see and takes things in rather unexpected directions, such as the Minerva/OFC side pairing that is more relevant than you’d think.
Title: Wax on IJ or on LJ
Author:
bronze_ribbons
Length/Word Count: ~1400
Pairing: SS/RL
Rating: PG
Summary: Inspired by omni_sama's marvelous Developing a Potion without Taking the Credit (or: Severus' Messy Desk). What do you consider worse -- reaching beyond one's grasp, or refusing what's within reach?
Author's Website:
bronze_ribbons’ masterlists for SS/RL, other HP, and Harudaki
Why everyone should read this: This very neat one-shot starts with one of the art recs in the next section and takes it beyond the development of the Wolfsbane to a time just-post-DH when the ruse is discovered. It very economically deals with some key survivals and shows a Snape who’s still very recognizably himself even when he’s … not exactly himself.
Title: Love, Lust, and Surrender on IJ or on LJ
Author:
nimrod_9
Length/Word Count: 870
Pairing: SS/RL
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Trading Places for aleonic’s art piece Red.
Author's Website:
nimrod_9’s IJ or LJ
Why everyone should read this: I really enjoyed the psychology of this short piece, which took a dream image and used it for Snape to discover not only who he was longing for but what he had to work past in order to be able to go after him.
Title: A Long Goodbye and a Slow Becoming on IJ or on LJ
Author:
lordhellebore
Length/Word Count: 2800
Pairing: SS/RL
Rating: R
Summary: Remus doesn't seek love, just another parent for his son. Severus is tired of being alone.
Author's Website: Fic Masterlist on IJ or on LJ
Why everyone should read this: This is a beautiful post-DH both-survived fic. It’s gritty and angsty and yet somehow manages to be filled with hope. It’s done as a series of drabbles, which are easily navigated either via the links in each entry or via the chapter index.

Title: Developing a Potion without Taking the Credit (or: Severus' Messy Desk) on InsaneJournal or on LiveJournal
Artist:
rip_von_christ aka
omni_sama (omni-fabulae on LJ)
Pairing: SS/RL
Rating: G
Summary: Contains photos some spy must have taken of Severus' desk, including the Wolfsbane recipe, some ingredients, some sketches/notes, and a letter to one Damocles Belby.
Artist's Website: omni-sama on deviantArt
Why everyone should see this: This is one of my favorite pieces of Snupin art, even though neither of the men are actually present in the image and the relationship is implied rather than explicit. In large part, that's because it’s not a traditional type of art. Someone referred to it as an “assemblage,” and I think that suits it, as it is both the individual elements and the way they’ve been assembled that create the effect of this “stolen” photograph.
Title: Emerging
Artist: ponderosa121
Pairing: SS/RL
Rating: R
Summary: Fantasy Fest short art prompt #26: naked and wet.
Artist's Website: Destiny Interrupted
Why everyone should see this: The many possible interpretations of what has just happened and what is about to happen, the expressions on both their faces, and the sheer intensity created by the lines and shading make this an amazingly compelling piece.

Title: Hook, Line, and Sink Her (requires login due to rating)
Also available at the SS/HG Exchange without login.
Author:
laiksmarei
Length/Word Count: 3370
Pairing: SS/HG
Rating: R
Summary: Double talk leads to double pleasure for a certain Potions Master.
Author's Website:
laiksmarei’s stories at OWL.
Why everyone should read this: It has a drunken Snape, an enabling Kingsley, and loads of hysterical double-entendres. Really, what more can a fangirl ask for?
Title: A Walking Shadow (requires login due to rating)
Also available at: Fanfiction.net (no login needed), Ashwinder (login required), and The Petulant Poetess (login required).
Author:
ariadne1
Length/Word Count: 130,038
Pairing: SS/HG
Rating: M
Summary: Hermione’s determination to research the Horcruxes, and how to destroy them, brings her alone to number twelve, Grimmauld Place, where she discovers that Snape has been waiting for her, gambling that the clues she possesses (by the end of Book 6) will lead her there. The two engage in a dance of uncertainty, at first, and fear, and then blood magic intervenes. Using Snape’s memories and the patterns of Voldemort’s Horcrux murders, they figure out and try to head off the deaths to the Order members who will have to lay down their lives to ensure Harry’s final victory. As they finalize their list, a new phoenix is born who will serve them, their growing passion, and their world in ways they cannot begin to imagine.
Author's Website:
ariadne1's story listing at the Online Wizarding Library.
Why everyone should read this: This is one of those tales that balances plot and character very well. Also, it gives a very intriguing take on what would be needed to destroy each of the Horcruxes and why, as well as how those requirements could bring Snape and Hermione together despite a very ... rocky (to say the least) start.
Title: One Perfect Valentine
Alternate Links: TPP
Author:
dickgloucester
Length/Word Count: 3201
Pairing: SS/HG
Rating: G
Summary: Professor Snape and Professor Granger are getting on very well, but why won't he make a move?
Author's Website:
badgerfics
Why everyone should read this: Her Snape here is a bit unusual, in that, once his spy days are done, his metabolism begins to act like a normal middle-aged person’s, something not often done in fanfic and a treat to see. The slow build of the relationship and some of the outside observations thereof are also very amusing.
Title: Of Debts and Debt Collection (requires login due to rating)
Alternate Links: here at Ashwinder and here at The Petulant Poetess
Author: Anastasia aka
ttfs
Length/Word Count: 180445
Pairing: SS/HG
Rating: M
Summary: A novel length post HBP HG/SS romance adventure. Some HP/GW and RL/NT. Lots of book seven theories. What if Severus returned, trained Harry for the final battle and worked to destroy the final Horcruxes?
Author's Website:
ttfs’s author pages at OWL, Ash, and TPP
Why everyone should read this: This tale has a deliciously ruthless-but-good Snape, a Hermione whose intellectual curiosity might well be the death of her, and a truly explosive Snape-Harry dynamic running alongside the developing Snape/Hermione romance. There are also some intriguing magical innovations and amusing misunderstandings as well as insightful use of various characters’ strengths.
Title: Boomerang
Also available at: OWL, Ashwinder, and TPP
Author:
ubiquirk
Length/Word Count: ~4400
Pairing: SS/HG
Rating: PG-13
Summary: If you fling yourself through time to change an event in your past, can you be certain which ‘you’ will come back? Thirteen months after the Final Battle, Harry enlists Hermione and Ron’s aid in saving Snape using an untested device – a device with side effects.
Author's Website: ubiquirk’s fic journal
Why everyone should read this: In the interest of full disclosure, I should say up front that I beta-read this fic, so I may be something other than impartial. However, I’m convinced I’d love it even if I hadn’t. It’s practically cliché in SS/HG to vilify Ron or possibly kill him off. Not only is he not bashed in this story, it’s entirely in his point of view. Also,
ubiquirk has done very interesting things with magic so that this Time-Turner fic pushes the envelope a bit and takes what could be an “easy fix” and instead makes it a whole new type of challenge.
Title: I’ll Never Take Advantage (requires login due to rating)
Alternate Link: story is also on Ashwinder
Author:
annietalbot
Length/Word Count: 12,496
Pairing: SS/HG
Rating: M
Summary: The bedtime ritual of a conflicted man.
Author's Website:
annietalbot’s author page at OWL
Why everyone should read this: Forced marriage/bonding is such a staple in fanfiction across fandoms, and forced marriage due to Ministry evil or idiocy is such a staple in Snape/Hermione that it’s difficult to do something new. It’s also difficult to portray the myriad ethical issues that such scenarios bring up. This fic manages to do both with inventive and insidious new magic and magical theory as well as an exploration of how a post-Voldemort Ministry has—or hasn’t—changed and how an honorable but conflicted Severus Snape would respond.
Title: Climate Change
Alternative Links: Also available at TPP and originally posted at the SS/HG Exchange
Author:
sylvanawood
Length/Word Count: ~17,000
Pairing: SS/HG
Rating: G
Summary: Hermione and Severus are both heads of their houses and compete for the Quidditch Cup and the House Cup. However, a few things have changed since Hermione was a student.
Author's Website:
sylvanawood’s author page at OWL
Why everyone should read this: This is a thoroughly enjoyable tale that both pokes fun at and gives a new spin on some of the classic devices to bring these two together.
Title: Mists of Time (WIP)
Author: amr
Length/Word Count: 221,341
Pairing: SS/HG
Rating: PG
Summary: Severus Snape knew that things would go wrong the minute the headmaster's worried face appeared in his fireplace. And he was right.
Author's Website: amr’s profile on OWL
Why everyone should read this: This is a very inventive Year 7 fic that builds an intriguing mythos around the Founders of Hogwarts and their descendants, offers a plausible solution to the parts Snape’s Unbreakable Vow that remain in force, and, always a plus, uses a rather unique device to clear Ron out of the way for Hermione and Severus.

Artist's Website: http://droxy.deviantart.com/
Why everyone should see this: This is a very unusual type of fanart, in that it incorporates cosplay and photomanipulation. (Snape is
droxy, and Hermione is
dozmuffnxc.) The choice of location and the drabble “caption” suggest so many possibilities that I come up with new ones each time I go back to this picture again.
