We are supposed to think James was so wonderful because he befriended the less likable Peter and remained a friend of werewolf Remus but is it possible that had he been a less demanding friend (friendship with a leader of pranksters is time consuming!) they would have found better friends? It is implied (by the number of desks in the OWL exam) that before the war the birth-cohorts were larger than what we see in Harry's days, so even with the tendency to make friends within one own's House there may have been other options for both of them.
