I've often wondered if Peter would have turned out to be the spineless character we eventually see if he hadn't been forced to share a dorm with Sirius and James.
It can't have been easy for him; I gather he was little, plump and slower than his more "charismatic" dorm-mates, and he was probably (maybe literally?) their butt-boy for seven years. Forced to be a fawning sycophant to avoid worse treatment, he had any moral character he may have originally possessed hexed out of him by his so-called "friends".
They weren't friends, I believe Peter held the position in their ranks of the pet dog who could be kicked repeatedly yet still be depended upon to lick the master's hands.
Lupin on the other hand was exciting, in that he was truly dangerous once a month. Therefore he was the "freak" of the group, tolerated as the nominal nerd, so long as he remembered who were the bosses.
I feel rather sorry for Peter. At least Severus had the moral character to fight back, but then, he didn't have to share a dorm with a pair of murderous thugs.
