Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry
Title: Harry Potter and the Enemy Within and Harry Potter and the Chained Souls
Author: Theowyn of HPG
Word Count: two novels, part one and part two
Rating: both are T
Pairings: none
Summary of Enemy Within: In his sixth year at Hogwarts, Harry's mental link to Voldemort is stronger than ever. Can Snape teach him to control the nightmarish visions? And is their connection the key to ending Voldemort's reign?
Summary of Chained Souls: Harry must discover how Voldemort cheated death. He faces Death Eaters, shadowy Ministry officials & suspicions that threaten to tear his own allies apart. But the answers lie in the mind where victory can only be won by freeing the chained souls. SEQUEL

Theowyn wrote Harry Potter and the Enemy Within prior to HBP, and then wrote and completed the sequel, Harry Potter and the Chained Souls, just before DH came out. The two stories are primarily concerning Harry and Snape, with Snape in a mentoring role. But there's also a great deal about Snape's background (which is almost exactly as we learned in HBP and DH), his inner motivations, etc. What I especially love about these stories is that Theowyn works out the overall Harry-defeats-Voldemort situation in a way that could almost have been planned by JKR if JKR had done a better job with DH, and of course, Harry's defeat of Voldemort is integrally linked to Snape's past and his motivations.

These are, in my opinion, two of the most well written stories in HP fandom. There's little to no romance, and very little "fluff", and Snape never goes soft or ever particularly mellow. But Harry gradually learns to respect him and mutual caring gradually develops. Harry and Snape are very much in character throughout, and Dumbledore is what many wish he had been. Many other supporting characters as well, all equally well written. And the suspense is excellent! Especially at the end.

  • Wow--thank you so much for these recs! I've just spent the last two days glued to my computer reading them. These are two of the best HP stories I've ever read...and certainly much better than the last two books of canon. I'm reccing them over at my LJ!
    • I'm glad to see you liked them. I have always felt that Theowyn figured out where JKR was trying to go even before HBP, and wrote a story with the themes that JKR wanted as well as almost the whole backstory (minus the Dumbledore revelations), but somehow made it all so much more satisfying.
      • Most definitely! In the recommendation I wrote up for my LJ, I mentioned how, after reading these stories, I actually felt like I'd finally got to read the rest of the HP saga--quite the opposite of my feelings after DH!
