Add to Memories Tell a Friend

So, the minute I brag about being in the posting habit, I had to run over to Chicago to get today's post in.

Most of today was pretty snoozy. Everyone was trying to get last-minute things done, including me. But after work, dinner with my sister! I introduced her to Koren BBQ. I think she liked it, but would probably not choose it on her own.

For me, though, it's the perfect kind of meal. There's fire, prepped bits of meat and lots of tiny bowls full of different foods. It's an eternal grazer's heaven! (of course, if it's nothing like a real Korean BBQ meal, please do enlighten me; I love learning about the proper meals of other cultures)

We did some catching up and decided on what to do for Thanksgiving - dinner out, boo-ya! We made the reservation at the table.

She was properly impressed that we'd already picked up the Trader Joe's Thanksgiving-in-one thing, otherwise known as Turkey Day Wellington. I didn't know people were buzzing about it. I thought it looked like a quick and easy heat-up for two, which we need more and more these days as we have so much going on. Right now, though, it's in the freezer.

She bragged on her new puppy and hit us with some heavy thoughts that I'm sure we'll discuss more on Thanksgiving. Because it's just the 3 of us, the day can seem long. I hope we'll be able to catch a movie after dinner, but the theaters seem to go back and forth on whether they're open on Thanksgiving Day. Christmas Day, every year; Thanksgiving, it's like the theater chains get together to decide our fate based on how badly the family needs to shut up and sit in the dark awhile. I'll never, ever forgive them for trapping me with my father on one of his last years. Painful, excruciating day.

I also know we won't be going to Walmart for some shopping distraction. We already boycott Walmart, but I can't believe they're doubling-down on the "open on Thanksgiving" in the face of the "Let Thanksgiving be a whole day off for families to be together" movement. Walmart is the Trump of department stores - you ask for something, it does the opposite. I can actually think of a lot of reasons why Walmart is the Trump of department stores, but the people who don't get that already wouldn't listen to an explanation anyway.

This is the holiday cards post with an explanation of why this is the year I will get through the whole list. You can find a screened replies post on the same date at IJ and even LJ. I will be at carding for a while, but I will finish this year!

BloMo16: Not the intended topic, but ok....

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

A friend and I discussed some of the ongoing sexual harassment news in chat tonight. I won't share my thoughts here because there's really no winning arguments to be made. People who try to defend the accused look almost as bad as the accused. People who have conspiracy theories about some of these accusations look like crackpots AND deniers (and that would be me, I have some serious conspiracy theory thoughts, but I've been a person disbelieved for telling my story, and it doesn't feel good, so I'll keep my theories to chat).

Although I will say this - just trying to talk about all this makes a person feel bad, I think, because of all the pitfalls that come with talking about it. But we need to keep talking about it because we can't go back. We've gone back on so many things since the orange snow-cone took over, we can't start this now and then put it back in the closet.

Have any of you had a conversation about the current sexual harrassment accusations and been totally comfortable in what you had to say? If so, please, repeat it here! You are all smart, wise people and I would learn at your feet.

BloMo15: The halfway point...holiday cards...No, really, play along this year....

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

It's mid-month and it only took about 9 days to get into the mode where I come home and "write a blog post" is at the top of my list of things to do for the evening. Huzzah!

This is the yearly "holiday cards" post. Now, I know I don't always come through with cards. Some years, I make it to the end of the list and other years, I don't even send to family.

This year, however, I am determined and motivated to get to the end of my card list because we plan on living in the new house by the end of the year. And, although we're going to retain ownership of our old place for a few more years - we're foolishly going to try our hand at renting it out - I'm going to put Change of Address announcements in the holiday cards. So, they all need to go out to everyone.

That said, if you've given me your address in the last 5 - 10 years, you're on my holiday card list. If you've moved, omg, please update your address, especially if you don't live in the continental United States, because your stamp is more expensive. I love sending cards overseas, but I love it a bit less when they come back (which, thankfully, rarely happens).

Comments on this post, wherever you see it, are screened. I'll make sure your comment remains screened if I have to reply to you. Also, my email address is well known to my older friends, but if you don't have that, you can use the journal message system or just leave a comment asking for my personal email and I'll pass it to you to use. Basically, I'm not hard to get a hold of in a way that makes you comfortable. We can figure it out.

As always, if you're not sure if I have your address or changed it with me, go ahead and leave it again. It's not a problem. I just wish I knew how organized people keep their contact lists these days. It's embarrassing, but right now, you're all in a Word label file. I know, it's like I'm a grandma without the cute kids to dote on and have fetch my glasses. Feel free to tell me how you organize your contact/address lists!

I welcome new replies, and very much hope to hear from old friends. I think I will link to this post from LJ. I know I shouldn't be giving our Russian Overlords more content, but if they can figure out how to make money off my holiday card post, more power to them.

Finally, you don't have to send me a card just because you ask for one from me. First, because I'm totally not reliable but second, because this is my pleasure or I wouldn't do it. ♥

This is why I am not writing a longer post tonight:

Reason 1
Alton Brown Live

Reason 2
Alton Brown Food God
Actually, he'd be first runner up if the actual Food God could not fulfill his duties, but that's all I'll give away.

Reason 3
Alton Makes His Own Popcorn
So Triggered for Popcorn after this!

If you get the chance to see this show, go. GO. If you think it's going to be one long Good Eats episode, you're very wrong. I was surprised how accessible it all was. Just Go.

This could seriously end my relationship, were it ever come to pass.

Lady Bug Luck by Jena DellaGrottaglia

LBL by Jenna - This is one of my favourite artists. I think I talk about her here every couple of years. Her latest work features my favourite critter, too!

I bought her 2018 calendar directly from her, and she sent many lovely extras. If you'd like some new and different art to stare at for 2018, contact Jenna here. You're in for a treat if you do!

I've really struggled with posting pictures this year, which is why they are linked and in the post. If you see the pictures in the post, not through the link, please let me know?

BloMo12: Hallmark Headaches....

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

Hallmark Christmas movies starting non-stop on two channels on the last weekend of October is giving me an ice cream headache - too much, too fast. This year, it's 4 new movies a weekend, Saturday and Sunday on each channel. And they're advertising a 3rd channel to come.

I spoke with the SO tonight, trying to figure out what my deal is with Hallmark Movies. I mean, why do I watch them? You should hear me talking to the TV during them. I say things like:

"Best friend?" *looks up* "Yup, there's our one black person of the movie."
"Yeah, because she's going to leave behind her 500-thousand dollar salary to sculpt ice in Vermont."
"I'd break up with the love of my life because he's out earning enough money to rewire our B&B instead of being at home all the time."
"Queue the adorable children...the adorable dog...the adorable cat...And the corresponding commercial."
"Wow, they have the chemistry of water in plastic."
"She does one strong thing and then....yup, now she's running away."

I'm actually even more cynical watching these things, but I can't mutter to myself and write things down.

Anyway, the SO thinks I like them for background noise and because at least I know I will always get a happy ending to a story I've only half-paid attention to. But I also think it's because, despite the unending whiteness, some of the stories are actually clever, engaging, romantic and generally several steps above the average Hallmark movie. When you make 200 movies a year, it makes sense that only a few of them would be actually good. I like the ones that I like enough to not want to miss out on any future faves.

*sigh* I'd feel bad watching so much pablum if I didn't follow them with late-shows and the news. I always land my feet back on Earth by the end of the day.

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

Finally saw Thor: Ragnarok today. Generally, I loved it. It was funny and there were dozens of sexy poses. I also think it's great that the Marvel universe movies can take serious liberties with the stories in a way that the comics often can't - the movies are short-form compared to the forever memory of comics.

That said, spoilers )

BloMo8: Provocative article...resolved...uncaught in headlights....

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
'"Nobody speaks up for the poor,” said Jamie Walsh, a white working-class woman who grew up in Muncie, explaining Trump’s appeal to those she grew up with on Muncie’s Southside. “There is systemic racism, but black people have advocates. Poor white people don’t. They’re afraid. They’re afraid that they’re stupid. They don’t feel racist, they don’t feel sexist, they don’t want to offend people or say the wrong thing. But white privilege is like a blessing and a curse if you’re poor. The whole idea pisses poor white people off because they’ve never experienced it on a level that they understand."'

This article has been on my mind for two days, so I thought I'd share it.

I was pretty shaken the day after the election last year. Shaken, but not surprised because I had a strong premonition when Trump first announced his run. He'd run before and been a joke, but I had a bad feeling, and despite me telling everyone and their brother to take the possibility seriously, here we are. I also felt pretty disgusted with and disappointed in my fellow Americans. I knew it would happen, but I couldn't make my intuitive certainty line up with my incredulity that more than a small core of white supremacists would vote for someone so vile.

I think the above quote from the article has made me understand on an intellectual level what might be going on out there. I don't have empathy, sympathy or any other -pathy for the poor white people clinging to the facade of Trump, but it now computes. That, alone, made this an important read for me. If you read it, we don't have to talk about it, but I'd just love hearing if it shed some light for you or not. It can be a completely different take-away for you.

This is sort of what has me whimsical at the end of the day: Deer from the Daily Place

Now, this picture is not from today, but it's an actual picture of the deer that like to hang around my place of daily activity. It's dark almost right at 5 pm now, and I headed to my car later than that. I saw three deer just across the street from me. Closer than normal. Me being a human, they were smart enough to move further down the street, but me being slow and lumbering, they weren't too concerned yet. That part of the street, though, put them into shadows, silhouetted by the lights of the active road next to the parking lot. Eventually a fourth deer came out of nowhere, but I wasn't surprised because most deer travel in families of three or four. I continued to see their shadows move closer to the active road, but no cars were on it. They were thinking about grazing there.

Eventually, a car came just as they were halfway on the road, and then the family of four turned into a herd of Nine, deer shadows emerging into the light from all sides to slowly pick their way across the road, looking back and forth from the car's headlights to the waiting copse of trees as if they couldn't believe the car wasn't going to run them over. Eventually, they scampered across and down, hidden from all sight but their own. The car moved on.

I thought about getting out my camera when I first saw them, but it was too dark. I had a brief moment when I wished I'd videoed the Sudden Deer scene, but then I realized that some moments can't be captured on digital. They either have to remain memories or fade away.

BloMo6: Serious bizniss...What's in your wallet....

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

OK, here is the discussion topic that has managed to stay with me for almost a week. Prepare yourself - we're going on a deep dive here.

What objects do you feel are absolutely necessary - will not leave the house without - to carry with you on a daily basis?
  • Start with what you would carry your necessities in - a purse, car, pockets, backpack, etc.?

  • Do you have levels of necessity? For example, my purse always has chapstick in it, but if I'm moving to pocket only, no chapstick.

  • Tell us a story about when you didn't have your necessity or when you did have it to your great relief, or both!

My Answers:
Will not leave the house without - Keys, cash, ID, credit cards, lip balm, tissues, female thingers, band-aids, hankie, phone, 1-stop makeup, a vial with Ibuprofen and Tylenol, paper, pen, gum or mints, and safety pins.

The above list is always in my bag. I'd say purse, but I'm not a traditional purse kind of person. For example, this is my first "purse". Show of hands, who else had one? This is one of my mid-2000s bags.

I have a wrist wallet that gets down to money, phone, tissues, keys, ID, and then the same can go in my pockets with lip balm and pain meds. When I went to U2 under the assumption that I could only get in a clear 5 x 7 bag, I had most of it in a sandwich baggie that folded in my pocket. But that's another story.

One thing I forgot to list was a mini-Leatherman, which is part of my good story. We were walking in downtown Chicago when a cyclist with a broken bike asked if we had anything that could help. I remembered the Leatherman, and voilà, she fixed her bike with it. I've always said my bag is full of tricks - that day I proved it with witnesses! (and, of course, was really happy to be able to help my fellow human being get home with all the preventatives I put in my bag)

Your turn!

BloMo5: A bad beginning....

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

Seriously, this is not a good start to trying to post every day. I need the day to be 25 hours long! At least I'm only posting from Chicago time tonight.

There wasn't much to tell about today. I stayed home with my malady and chatted and messed around, unable to focus. So far, none of the Hallmark Xmas movies have impressed me this year, and I'm feeling a bit hammered by the network, because there were two more tonight. Yeesh.

I ought to record me watching one sometime. I mutter about "Oh, look, the black friend" and "Yeah, giving up being a lawyer for ice scultping will pay the bills". i mean, I started watching them to make fun of them, but there are a handful that are worthwhile and I just wish all to hell that more than half the movies of the year could be worthy of real interest.

This will probably not be the last time I talk about Hallmark movies this month. Be forewarned.

BloMo4: Only Chicago time tonight....

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

So, the movie ended up being a bust for me. I have one other malady going on, and it kept me home. The S.O. went, though, and it must have been divine intervention because it ended up being a clusterfuck. Friend One got all the tickets on one receipt and Friend Two didn't show up until 5 minutes before the movie, so none of them ended up sitting together in the sold-out venue.

If the SO gets his homework done and I feel better, we'll go tomorrow. Then I'll finally be able to watch all the commercials and see what didn't end up in the movie. ~_^
