Snape was tired. He'd been in the sun all day, running back and forth to the water with Harry. They watched the other people on the beach and talked about how different it was from their experience of the seashore at home. The last beach-goers were leaving now, and Snape stank of old sunblock and jellyfish cream. Fine sand had infiltrated places he'd rather not consider.
As he started to pack their things, he noticed that Harry was sitting very still, looking out over the water. He must have seen Snape pause, because he smiled a little bit. "That really is the Mediterranean. The middle of the world. And we are really here."
"Yes, we are." Snape let his gaze wander toward the horizon, over a sea sailed by humans since the dawn of time.
"And all day, I've been right next to it, playing silly word games and wading in the shallows."
Snape shifted over to sit beside Harry and lean into him. "There is the beach, and there is the ocean. Each one shapes the other. It is your intention that determines what you see when you come to the shore."
Harry sighed and rested his head on Snape's shoulder. Hands linked, they watched the shadows lengthen and the twilight settle in, until darkness drove them back to the lights of Cannes.
