I can't believe November is almost done ... it seemed like it went by extra quickly.  I now have a cleaner house due to the pressure of incoming relatives.  My dining room is not decluttered but that was never part of THE PLAN.  I didn't host Thanksgiving dinner at my house; just served as a home base for my sister and her husband since my mother has a very uncomfortable sofa bed in the basement.  The sofa bed apparently also comes complete with mouse droppings and that was the final straw with my sister.  Good news on that front for my mother -- she consulted members of her ladies social group ( I really don't know what else to call it -- they have regular meetings and apparently are a charitable group but I've never seen hard evidence of charity work )  for recommendations for either a cleaning service or cleaning person.  My mother says she "started at the top"  for recommendations ( with a Coke heiress ) and just interviewed someone who starts Monday.  I'm very glad since at 75 my mother just wasn't getting stuff done that needed to be done ( reference the mouse droppings in sofa bed ).

I did my part for the national economy today but did not get out to the stores at 5 am this year.  We got to the stores about 7 am and apparently there WAS a run on the $ 19.99 griddles though fortunately there were plenty in stock.  The only really large crowd we hit was at Old Navy but we did not go to any electronic stores ( Best Buy ) or Toys r Us.  We hit the time between the early morning wave and the afternoon wave which was all right with me.  I had lunch at Steak and Shake, saw my sister and her family off and collapsed into bed for an afternoon nap.

* Hope all who celebrate Thanksgiving had a wonderful time spent with family and friends.

* The Girl Child went to the Black Friday sales this morning. At 4:49, while I was doing some serious sleeping, she texted. Scared me to death. Why did she text at that unholy hour, you ask... because she spotted John Travolta at the mall. Jesus. She's a freak.

* The Boy Child had to work today - so no shopping for him. Instead, he gave the Girl a list and his debit card. He gave his sister his fucking debit card. When she was going to a mall. The boy is an idiot. Honestly.

* It's chilly here in the Sunshine State tonight. Lovely thing, that. Right along with the Criminal Minds marathon on A&E.

* And, on a Criminal Minds note, this week's episode killed me. Dead. *pets the CM team*

elfwreck @ 10:34 pm: OD'd on tryptophan
The post I wrote last night and didn't send 'cos I'd just posted something else and I always feel ridiculous making two posts in an hour:

I like the dressing. Rob makes the best turkey dressing in the world. He makes croutons from sourdough bread & italian dressing, and it's got sausage and ground beef and celery and onions, and chantrelles & crimini mushrooms and cherries and water chestnuts.

And Blossom came down from Wolf Creek and made cranberry relish; yaaay! and I made mashed potatoes, and Gail made apples-and-sweet-potatoes with the recipe Rob got from the WitchesWithBrains yahoogroup, and we had brussels sprouts and candied carrots, and pumpkin pie that Rob made yesterday. And turkey. And gravy made from the turkey drippings.

Mygods I'm stuffed. It's all really, really yummy food. And we'll have leftovers for daaaaayz. Including enough cranberry relish to make piroshkis tomorrow and maybe to have to take to work next week.

And I'm, like, DRUGGED. From the tryptophan. I want to sleep now and wake up... Tuesday. Instead, we have four extra people in our room who are watching the movie "Crowley" while I try to find new fanfic.

sylvanawood @ 01:37 pm: Google Wave
Google Waves is something that looks very interesting, it is, however, still in its beta stage.
It is complex and will need some time to figure out. It does look like fun though, and I think that fandom will find many creative ways to use what is offered. Syndicated lj entries can be included in waves, from what I've gathered, but I didn't have time yet to look closely at this yet.

You need a google account to use the waves.

So, if you want it, first come, first serve.

ptyx @ 09:11 am: Shows I've Been Watching
The Barchester Chronicles: I watched the first six eps. There’s just one ep left now. The Stanhopes are wonderfully witty. Slope is a nasty piece of work! His battles with Mrs Proudie are hilarious.

House: I watched all the eps up to the 6.05 (Brave Heart). I’ve been loving Season 6. There’s more interaction between the characters, something that was lacking in the previous seasons.

Mad Men: I’ve finished Season 3. Wow, what a great finale! cut for spoilers )

Merlin: I’m up to date. I’m afraid I disagree with most of my journal friends about the latest ep, “The Lady of the Lake”, because cut for spoilers )

janus @ 11:00 pm: Worth Dying For
Title: Worth Dying For
Author: [info - personal] janus
Characters: Severus, Abraxas, Lucius
Rating: G
Word Count: 200
Warnings: dark thoughts, war, violence

It was war.

Severus fought and killed, and so he died a little, inside, as happens in war.

His side had the dreams. Was it always that the offensive side was the one with the dreams? Those on the defence dreamt only of peace, an end to fighting.

Perhaps Abraxas had asked or arranged it - his squire and his son - but Severus was always paired with Lucius on missions for their Dark Lord. Lucius, for all his concrete sublimity, dreamt stronger than anyone, as if his dreams were a certainty, a formula, that only needed time and this constant duty of violence to reach inevitable fulfillment. His future was assured.

Severus' own dreams were more aethereal. He dreamt of a chance, pride, a life, straining to the stars of possibility, or... beyond mere stars. He pictured a straight burning phosphorescent line into endless space, trailing an arrow of greatness. He pictured the arrow shot from his soul, his hand, his ingenuity.

This shone for him, illuminating Abaxas' and Lucius' perfect alabaster world of purity and right by magic.

Magic, freed and all-triumphant, was everything. It was worth fighting for. It was worth killing for. It was worth dying for.

elfwreck @ 10:20 pm: Pagan terminology meta
I put together a list of Pagan terms for use by nonpagans, specifically writers, at [info - community] writing_religion: Pagan terminology for nonpagan writers.

It's about 2700 words long. I'd welcome any feedback or questions; part of me thinks it's okay, and part thinks it's about 1/3 done and needs at total rewrite--but if I waited until I thought it was "finished," I'd never get it posted. And there really isn't enough info available *about* Pagans that's not written for people who are joining/members of Pagan religions.

And incompleteness is not necessarily wrong, in this case. It's more important to me that nonpagans understand the complexity of the issues than that they learn the details involved.

It was a busy Thanksgiving -- First breakfast with Family at 8 am.  On to a Thanksgiving church service at 9 am.  Then a quick drive to my paternal grandmother's grave and to place a poinsettia on my grandparents grave marker for the holidays.  Next preparing for Thanksgiving dinner at 1 pm.  A brief rest and on to the movie theater at 3:30 -- Blindside with Sandra Bullock which was a great holiday feel good movie -- and finally early Black Friday shopping at Old Navy.  We went back to my parent's house and planned out where and what we wanted and decided we did not NEED to be up at 5 am.  We are gambling that the things we want are not high interest items and we can at least wait 'til the sun is up.  Busy day but fun and I am very thankful that I have a family I can spend all day with and noone has to call 911.

bitterfic @ 08:13 pm: more meme madness
1. Prepare a list of 10 characters and 10 scenarios/prompts. (Example: #1 and #2 are menaced by circus animals.) Keep it to yourself.
2. Have your friend prepare 10 characters and 10 prompts, without knowing what's on your lists.
3. Swap prompts lists.
4. Write the synopsis of a fic for each prompt.

On to teh craziness... )

If anyone is interested in trying this comment with a list of 10 prompts for me and I'll reply with a list of 10 for you (make up your list of 10 characters before you get my prompts).

Resulting drabble/ficlet to be posted sometime in December.

Usual request - pairing or character, plus a 1-to-3-word prompt. Any fandom you know I write/have written is fine.

Thanks!

[If I get multiple prompts, I will write more than one if the muse is cooperative.]

celandineb @ 02:42 pm: Happy Thanksgiving!
To those who celebrate - and a happy Thursday to everyone else!

We're going to our neighbors' for the evening in about two hours; pretty much all we've done today is take Juno to the dog park (where there were a handful of other dogs), have brunch, and cook stuff to take tonight. SO's worked a bit on his window. So yeah, definitely a holiday.

Tomorrow I'm actually going to roast a turkey breast, just for us, because otherwise there would be no leftover turkey. There were fresh ones in the store yesterday when we stopped to pick up some milk, so I made the decision partly on impulse. I'll make dressing and gravy too, but other than that, it'll be some of the near-infinite supply of leftover veggies, nothing special. Probably won't make mashed potatoes, at least not for tomorrow. Possibly for with leftovers though. I contemplated making rolls (my sister having called about that recipe this morning) but I think maybe will wait and make them at Christmas instead.
