Title: Healthy Alternatives, I
Challenge: The Great Hall - Welcoming Feast
Word Count: 100
Note: this is yet another Motherless Child drabble series, set about two months after Snape and Lupin have adopted their werewolf son, John.

Letter received by Deputy Headmaster Severus Snape from Fifth-Year Prefect Parthenope Goyle and several other students, July 2004:

Dear Professor Snape,

We, the undersigned, have great concerns about the health and appropriateness of the food provided at the Welcoming Feast in September. There is nothing quite like assembling again in the Great Hall each year, but the predominance of red meat, crisps, biscuits, and cakes makes it difficult for anyone to maintain a healthy diet.

We would humbly request that the following be added to the menu:

Pulses
Green vegetables
Soy milk
Brown rice
Salad bar
Fresh fruit
Wheat grass….

Booh-Rah! I love your ecological turns.

I can imagine Snape responding with the wizarding version of a medieval-ish macrobiotic diet. Ok, maybe with some help from Pomona or Luna, though oddly perhaps, I see Minerva as knowledgeable here. I mean, with all the centuries of alchemy and such, shouldn't there be some Wizarding World beliefs about "foods of power"?

...certain mushrooms harvested at midnight under a full moon, kinds of herbs that increase a witch's power, foods that aid - or balk - transfiguration... stuff like that.

On second thought, maybe the reason they feed the students such appallingly bland, bourgeois food is to keep their newly developing magic power in check! Maybe all the pumpkin juice waters it down, or helps the corridors of Hogwarts control how it's channeled...
