The Emperor's Curve, by the Yuletide Fairy

2007-12-25

[Vorkosigan]

Title: The Emperor’s Curve
Author: Yuletide Fairy [info]yuletidefairy
Summary: A Barrayaran Political Science Thesis.
Characters: Gregor Vorbarra, Cordelia Vorkosigan
Rating: PG

Why?

This wasn't written for me, but it could as well have been. A defining moment of Gregor's upbringing, that proves a wonderful hindsight into Gregor's relationship with Cordelia.

Two To Make Peace, by Kathryn Andersen

2007-09-05

[Vorkosigan/Doctor Who]

Title: Two To Make Peace
Author: Kathryn Andersen [info]kerravonsen
Summary: “It takes one to make war, and two to make peace.”
Characters: Miles Vorkosigan, the Doctor
Rating: PG

Why?

Although it helps to have a general idea what Doctor Who is about, it's not necessary to be familiar with the actual show, which helped in my decision to choose to read this story.

Miles' voice was spot on, and from the little I've seen of DW, so was the Doctor's. Very enjoyable story.

Ekphugion, by Shaye

2007-09-04

[Vorkosigan/New Battlestar Galactica]

Title: Ekphugion
Author: Shaye [info]fourteenlines
Summary: Success isn't how far you got, but the distance you traveled from where you started. - Greek proverb
Characters: Aral Vorkosigan, Cordelia Vorkosigan, Miles Vorkosigan, Ivan Vorpatril, Gregor Vorbarra, Lee 'Apollo' Adama, William Adama, Laura Roslin, Kara 'Starbuck' Thrace, Sharon 'Boomer' Valerii
Rating: PG-13

Why?

Under Shaye's talented pen, the Vorkosigan and the BSG universe mesh wonderfully. She confronts the characters from both shows, pitting their characterisations subtly. I just wish she could have written more.

A Deeper Season, by E.E. Beck and Stasia

2007-08-25

[Vorkosigan]

Title: A Deeper Season

Authors: E.E. Beck [info]lightgetsin and Sahiya [info]sahiya
Summary: Take one Miles, a hapless cousin, Cetagandan social politics, a galactic conspiracy, a scientific discovery, a lot of firepower, and an unexpected declaration. Mix well and step back quickly.
Pairing: Miles Vorkosigan/Gregor Vorbarra, Ivan Vorpatril/Ekaterin Vorsoisson
Rating: up to NC-17
Warning: AU

Why?

Simply the best fanfic I’ve ever read. The romantic relationship between Miles and Gregor is built completely convincingly. It could fit seamlessly in canon, in terms of plot, tone and characterisation. Not to be missed.

Note

Although I’ve done my best to put all the stories in chronological order, anyone reading them for the first time should begin with A Deeper Season, then What Passing Bells.

A Maze of Twisty Passages, All Alike, by Merry

2007-08-25

[Vorkosigan]

Title: A Maze of Twisty Passages, All Alike
Author: Merry [info]merryish
Summary: Thanks to some rather unsavory family connections on his mother's side, Ivan Vorpatril had had occasion in his life to be half-killed by a truly impressive array of instruments and circumstances.
Characters: Ivan Vorpatril, Gregor Vorbarra.
Rating: PG

Why?

There just isn’t enough Ivan/Gregor interaction in the books, but Merry remedies to that masterfully. A hilarious tale, completely in tone with canon.

Five Ways Ekaterin Never Met Miles at Twenty, by Sahiya

2007-08-23

[Vorkosigan]

Title: Five Ways Ekaterin Never Met Miles at Twenty
Author: Sahiya [info]sahiya
Summary: Regret . . . And what if she and Miles had met at twenty, instead of she and Tien? It had been possible; she’d been a student at the Vorbarra District University, he’d been a newly minted officer in and out of the capital. If their paths had crossed, might she have won a less bitter life? — p. 534, A Civil Campaign
Pairing: Miles Vorkosigan/Ekaterin Vorsoisson
Rating: G

Why?

A slightly bittersweet look at what could have happened. We get the full range of Ekaterin’s characterisation: from an Ekaterin who’s entirely taken with physical attributes to an Ekaterin who can look past the physical to Miles’ brains and sense of humour.
