A tale of friendship that turns to love, one of my favourite topics. It's quite bittersweet, in the end, but the way the three men find themselves and each other is lovely.
“I told you he wasn’t asleep.” Snape’s voice, acerbic as it had always been, was accusatory.
Malfoy’s response, Harry noted, was just as frosty. “Thank you, Professor, for being so prompt in providing the potion. I can assure you, its addition to the Healing Charms will speed the patient’s recovery. I promise the Board will be in touch in regards to whatever expenses you’ve incurred in bringing it.”
A heavy silence fell. Harry used the time to puzzle through the innuendos and double talk flying between Malfoy and Snape. He wasn’t so incapacitated that he couldn’t recognize barely restrained antipathy when he heard it. The apparent mutual dislike confused him. Although he had never seen Snape and Malfoy act as friends, he had always assumed that they were. After all, Snape had made an Unbreakable Vow to protect Draco with his life. He could have avoided it if he had wanted to — he had even admitted as such to Remus. Although the night he had made the confession, a few months after the war, both Remus and Snape had been drunk, and Snape hadn’t been aware of Harry’s presence hovering outside the room. If he had been, Harry knew, he wouldn’t have said half of the things that he had. And to this day, Harry wouldn’t know many of the things about Snape that he did.
“That is, without a doubt, the most polite ‘fuck you’ I’ve ever heard, Draco. Congratulations. Your manners have deteriorated to an even greater degree than your ethics. I never thought I’d see the day those famous Malfoy etiquette lessons fell by the wayside.” Snape’s voice was at odds with his words. The words were bitter, the tone fatigued.
“I meant no disrespect. I have a patient to attend to.”
Harry frowned. Malfoy didn’t sound chastised in the least. He heard Snape snort. “Indeed you do.” A shadow fell over Harry, blocking the worst of the glaring overhead lights. Harry remained still, knowing Snape was leaning over him. He pulled back without comment and Harry relaxed. The tension that had curled though him the moment he had recognized Snape’s voice abated. He detected more shuffling around him and then Snape spoke again, his voice sounding farther off this time. “Feel free to firecall me if you have any questions about the potion.”
