"Alstromeria Smith," McGonagall read off the list, holding the sorting hat in her left hand.
Without a second thought, Allie bounded up the stairs, tripping on her robes as she headed for the stool. "Oh, sorry, Ma'am," she said, dusting off her robes. "These were my father's, and they're a little big on me."
She climbed up onto the stool and giggled as the hat settled in on her head.
"I've heard you can talk to us," she said to the hat. "My name is Alstromeria Smith."
"It is not," the hat said. "And I think you know this, young lady."
"Well, that's my secret. But if you know, then we don't need to tell anyone else."
The headmistress raised an eyebrow at this conversation. After a few moments, a flash of recognition crossed her face, and her cheeks flushed.
"Very well, young miss. We shall keep your secret identity. Although I believe eventually, you might be proud to use your true name."
The hat settled in and began Allie's poem:
Clever and fun and an Optimist Eyes wide heart aflame Logical, problem solver, a realist Hiding secrets of your name
Bounding energy, secret father Exuberance bounding your only flaw Head in the clouds, feet on the ground This girl will soar in RAVENCLAW
McGonagall took the hat from her head and stared after her as the little girl jumped off the stool and raced over to the Ravenclaw tables. She settled in next to another girl her age with long blond hair wearing a bracelet made of corks and radishes.
