This was a mistake, pure and simple. She must have known it. She must have known that there was no way for her to help Draco, not now - not after all he'd done. It didn't matter that he regretted it; he was going to Azkaban for his crimes, that much was clear.
So why wouldn't she just move? Ron couldn't figure it out. She had absolutely nothing to gain by protecting him, except her own condemnation.
"Move," he rasped, holding his wand up in a threatening manner. "I'm not going to hurt him."
Pansy only scoffed. "Oh no, you're just going to send him to Azkaban for the rest of his life."
Ron's jaw clenched. "He's earned it," he said simply, jerking his head towards the man lying on the floor behind her, unconscious. "I've got to take him with me."
"I can't allow that."
Ron's hand tightened around his wand. "I don't want to hurt you, Pansy..."
"Don't call me that."
Ron started. He opened his mouth to respond, but couldn't come up with anything. He stood there, his mouth hanging open stupidly, while she drew her wand.
"But...but I thought..."
"Thought what? Thought that because we shagged once or twice, we're suddenly friends?"
Ron nodded slowly; it wasn't just that, and she knew it. He could see it behind the determination in her eyes. They'd shared some sort of understanding in their moments together - it was hard to explain, but he'd felt it. And so had she. Hadn't she?
Ron's brow furrowed; there was moisture on his chest, and he wasn't sure how it had gotten there. Well, not until he looked down into her eyes and saw that they were filled with tears.
She muttered an apology under her breath, wiping the tears away hastily. "I've never cried in front of anyone before...well, not really, anyway..."
He couldn't have been imagining things. Or...could it have all been an act?
"Put your wand away," he commanded softly. He kept his hand steady as he pointed his wand at her, not breaking eye contact all the while. She didn't respond, only pointed her wand at him, as well.
You're going to have to fight her. It's your job to bring Malfoy in, by any means necessary...
"I don't want to fight," he said helplessly, in a final effort to make her surrender. "And...I don't want you getting punished for defending him."
Pansy pursed her lips. "You do what you think is right, Weasley, and I'll do the same."
