Slytherin 5th Year Boy's Dormitory [backdated to late last night]
Severus sighed as he entered the dormitory, pulling off his cloak. Everybody seemed to be asleep, so he cast a quick Muffliato Charm before venturing too far into the room. He'd learnt the hard way that Rosier didn't take too well to being woken in the wee hours of the morning. After a quick inspection to make certain the curtains were closed on all the beds except his own, he risked lighting the candle on his bedside table. Unbuttoning his robes with one hand, he retrieved his nightshirt off the foot of his bed and sat down, toeing off his boots. His rounds had seemed interminable tonight.

Though he knew he hadn't been a great deal of fun when he'd been with Sappho earlier in the evening, he wanted nothing more than to be with her now. To rest his head on her shoulder and hear her tell him that everything was going to be all right. Even if he didn't believe her. Not yet, anyway. Pity he couldn't sneak into the girl's side of the dormitories and crawl into bed with her. He might be able to disable the spells that kept boys out of the girls' rooms, but he'd probably get them both expelled if he tried. It wasn't even about trying to get into her knickers. He just wanted -- needed -- to be close to her right now. But that would have to wait until morning.

Draco was pulling one of his famous all-nighters. He did this frequently back in their own time, and toward the end of his sixth year, Draco had found that he could go roughly three or four days without really needing sleep. Oh, sure a cat nap here and there, but that was all that he required. Draco had gained the reputation of a napper, however, when a few of his classmates had caught him snoozing on the cozy couch in the fireplace in the middle of the afternoon. Not that Draco had really cared, then.

He heard someone come in the room, curiosity peaking his interest. Slowly opening the curtains to his bed, Draco stopped when he saw that it was Severus. Oh, Merlin. Draco would have to watch his tongue, unless he truly wanted Severus to figure them all out. Surely Severus had seen the similarity between him and Lucius. Draco, for one, knew well enough that the two knew each other in this time as well. Finally deciding, Draco swung his legs over the bed and crossed the room, walking toward where Severus was sitting on his bed. "Another late night?" Draco questioned in the old Malfoy drawl, unable to keep it out of his tone. He smiled charmingly enough, but this would be an interesting exchange between the two of them.

Draco didn't really know how Severus treated someone who wasn't a Malfoy but who was in Slytherin personally.

Severus froze at the sound of a voice, before he undid any more buttons on his robes. He'd had more than enough of his other roommates poking fun at his protruding breastbone -- pigeon breast, they called it -- in his first year at Hogwarts. He had no wish for a repeat performance with Cragwitch and Maltian. After he'd recovered from the momentary surprise, he turned to face the other boy.

"Sorry -- did I wake you?" he asked with an apologetic shrug, and sighed a second later. "Prefect duties." Frowning slightly, he cocked his head to one side. "I suppose your other school wasn't large enough to have prefects, was it?"

Prefect duties. Draco kept the wishful look off his face, but only from years of training and control. Oh, how he wished he could have that sense of normalcy again. "Er, no, it wasn't," Draco returned quietly, feeling downright awful for lying to someone who he respected as much as Severus. Remus knew. Why in hell couldn't he share the news with Severus, someone who he knew would have enough decorum not to go spreading the word to anyone else? Well, then. He'd see first if Severus could guess who he was, or at least hint that he recognized the old Malfoy charm. That way, if he were questioned by Hermione, he could use the "I couldn't lie" excuse, knowing she'd fall for it out of all of them. Grinning a little then, Draco used all of his father's quirks, as grandly as he could.

Sitting poised straight up on the bed, Draco tilted his chin upward then looked down at the other--a habit of his father's, especially when the man was younger. Lucius had perfected the technique and Draco had learned it from him. Too bad my hair's not long like Father's. It'd be a dead give-away then. Draco smiled charmingly, letting that old Malfoy smile creep onto his lips and the superior, "I'm-better-than-thou" expression fall onto his face. Ha. That was enough for now. He'd have fun this with, surely.

Severus narrowed his eyes and then blinked. He must be more tired than he thought, or it was a trick of the light. Facing forward again, he raised his hand and rubbed his eyes. Or perhaps it was because he'd been feeling so melancholy lately, and he only wished to have someone older whose opinion he could ask. Whatever the reason, it was odd to even acknowledge what he had been thinking just then: that Lucius Malfoy was standing in front of him in the fifth year boy's dormitory at just after one in the morning. But it couldn't be. Lucius was miles away in Wiltshire -- probably sound asleep by now, or enjoying himself as some fashionable party. And besides, Lucius was several years older, not sixteen or so. Why on earth would he be back at Hogwarts?

Draco couldn't help the smirk that came onto his lips as he practically saw the recognition form in Severus's expression. He was looking at Draco like he was seeing a ghost, and in reality, he pretty much was. I suppose this'll be the one time I have to thank Father for his looks, Draco thought in amusement, keeping that perfect imitative pose. Leaning forward just slightly, Draco pitched his voice to match his father's perfectly, completely with the slight purr that Lucius added to the ends of his long words. He kept it at a soft, alluring tone that would draw anyone into his conversation, remembering in his younger years when Lucius would actually tell him stories and how easily captivated Draco had become then.

"Is something the matter? You don't look so well. A bit peaky, if you ask me." Draco was still holding back. He knew he could imitate his father more perfectly than anyone could have imagined, but he had to play his game to keep the pure suspicion from Severus's mind. Draco already knew, however, that the image of Lucius was clearly in Severus's head. It wasn't hard to see through the younger version of Severus. Not hard at all.

"I'm all right," Severus said dismissively, hoping to wave the other boy's concerns away as easily as he waved his hand. "A bit tired, I think. Just then you -- ah -- reminded me of somebody who used to go to school here. But I'm sure it was just a trick of the light. He's been gone from Hogwarts for ages, now." Suddenly, he felt a bit like he was under a Muggle microscope, and unfortunately, buttoning the neck of his robs up again didn't quite help. He wanted to change the subject to ... well, anything but himself, but what was even more unfortunate was that he couldn't think of anything else to say.

"Has he?" Draco questioned lightly, letting that purr slip from his voice more naturally now. He kept up the proper pose, and then Draco allowed one of his hands to run slowly through the strands of his blonde hair--surely something that Lucius had done when he'd been younger, too. "Who is this enigma that I remind you of, then? I must find him and see if I'm worthy of such a compliment." Oh, lord, Draco was having far too much fun with this. How hard would it be to get Severus to say Lucius Malfoy's name, though?

Now they were talking about something else ... and he didn't feel a whole lot better. It was almost as if Maltian could see right through him, and worse yet, the other boy found that fact highly amusing. Or then again, perhaps Severus was merely overly sensitive because of the past few days. He thought about trying out his Occlumency skills, but if he botched it, it would probably be even more obvious that he was feeling uncomfortable. "I doubt you'll be able to find him, unless you have the proper clearance at the Ministry," Severus answered, frowning. Or enough gold to buy your way into swanky parties... "But in case the two of you are ever introduced, his name is Lucius Malfoy."

Draco couldn't wipe the wicked grin off his features now at that point in time. "Oh, we'll be introduced, I can guarantee that to you." Draco tossed his hair casually, giving Severus a studious glance now. His words had slipped off his tongue in an almost purr again, his tone almost seductive. "Now, Severus, why do you think I can come in here, reminding you of a very unique man such as Lucius Malfoy? Twelve students--only twelve--claim to be survivors of a plague that attacked some village. None of us have even mentioned the name of said village, and we all have fairly shady back stories." Draco was grinning from ear to ear. "Can you put those two things together for me, Sev?" Draco used a nickname that he remembered his father occasionally calling Severus, or at least, referring to him when he didn't feel like pronouncing his full name.

Well, obviously, because you're hiding something, Severus thought, resisting the urge to roll his eyes. Of course, he'd already worked that much out without help. But he didn't want to actually say that. It would have been rather rude. Not to mention, he might have put Maltian off talking to him, and he didn't want that, because he was intrigued. "Why are you lot always staring--?" he began in a whisper, but just then something clicked in his brain.

Only two people had ever called him Sev: Lily and Lucius. How would Maltian know that? He wasn't spending a great deal of time with Lily these days that the other boy would have overheard, so that left ... "You know Lucius already, don't you?" he asked softly, narrowing his eyes. Yes, Maltian had said the two of them would be introduced, but as ridiculous as it sounded, Severus was sure he was right. They knew each other already. Somehow, they did.

Oh, this was rich. Draco was thoroughly amused. It had really only taken three hints for Severus to get this information; Draco was sure he could easily gather the rest of it soon, too. Stretching out his fingers briefly, Draco nodded slowly as he glanced back at Severus pointedly. "Aye, I do already know Lucius. Now, think carefully about every word that I've said--particularly, how I've said those words--and see if you can't come to the proper conclusion yourself. How is it that I can have the looks and the mannerisms of Lucius, know his nickname for you, yet he's also already been out of school for so many years?" Draco smiled charmingly, deciding to see if Severus could put things into place on his own.

So, they resembled one another and had similar mannerisms. And the same drawling voice. Severus frowned, trying to put it together and come up with ... whatever conclusion it was that Maltian wanted him to reach. The only thing he could really think of was that they were related, but that couldn't be it. Lucius had told him the only living relatives he had were in France. Of course, then he was tempted to ask Maltian if he was French, but he hadn't a trace of an accent. On the other hand, no one would know by hearing him talk that he'd been raised in Wales. "Are the two of you ... related?" he asked finally, with a small shrug.

"Oh, very good, Sev. Aye, we're related, but perhaps not quite in the way that you're thinking." Draco smiled charmingly, wondering if he should keep this guessing game up any longer, or if he should just blurt out what he wanted so desperately to say. Draco decided to give the man one more chance. "Perhaps I should inform you that my middle name is, in fact, Lucius. I'm also a pureblood, Sev. I realize these last few clues are a bit too glaringly obvious, but really, I've...inherited Lucius's sense of patience when he wants things, I suppose." Draco pulled his hand out in front of him, as if to examine his nails, then glanced back over to Severus.

If the man followed pureblood traditions at all, it was fairly common for the son to take on the father's name as his middle name. Lucius had given Draco that honour, if nothing else, it appeared.

Inherited ... That could only mean one thing, and it wasn't that Maltian was some distant cousin, recently arrived from France. "Myn duw," Severus whispered, but then he shook his head. It couldn't be. Maltian had to be at least fifteen, but Lucius was barely twenty-two. This must be some sort of weird dream. Just then, Severus reached down and pinched his arm, which smarted -- badly, actually, because he'd done so fairly hard -- but it showed he wasn't dreaming. He supposed this could be another joke, though it would be in very bad taste. And besides, how would Potter and Black have found somebody who looked so much like Lucius? A mere joke also wouldn't explain the presence of the other eleven new students, or how Maltian knew that Lucius called him Sev.

"You're ... his son," he whispered finally, and this time it wasn't a question. "But how?" That he said more to himself than to Maltian, and his eyes suddenly widened. Time Travel. That was certainly something earth-shattering enough to necessitate deception on so large a scale, as he'd mentioned to Lily. "From ... the future?"

[OOC: Not that it really makes a difference, other than to show how rattled Snape is, but ... he never spoke Welsh after his mother died, so Draco might be a little surprised to hear that. :-) And it means "my god," if you're interested.]

Draco was positively smirking when Severus came to the proper conclusion, and he nodded proudly. "Aye, I'm his son. From the future, yes. All of the new students are from the future, and many of us are the children of those currently attending Hogwarts, actually." Draco gazed steadily at Severus, lowering his voice even more. "You must promise me that you will keep this a secret, Sev. In our time...you are a confident to me. My godfather, actually. We've...Hermione and I have already told Lupin, but I've thought it only fair to inform you, as well, for various reasons besides the one that I gave. If you're...if you'd like to know more, I can share, but I only ask that you tell no one, not even the other future students, that you know. I'm not sure how kindly they'll take to hearing that you know this information as well." Draco smiled sadly, but he was relieved that Severus had guessed the information on his own, without Draco having to flat-out tell him.

This was all a bit convenient, wasn't it? As much as Severus enjoyed a good puzzle, he began to think he'd been too easily led along. How would twelve people get Time Turners? It was hard enough to acquire one. And if they were from the future, why were they here? What was so bloody special about 1976? If anything, this was just another cover story they were feeding him to throw him off the scent. They must have known he'd grown suspicious. For all he knew, Maltian had used some sort of imitation Polyjuice Potion that made him look similar to Lucius, but not quite right.

Or perhaps this was some sort of pureblood breeding program, in which they secretly raised magically produced offspring in a remote location, in case the couple in question died or became infertile at a later date or ... something. That made about as much sense. Of course, once Maltian mentioned Lupin, it was all Severus could do not to roll his eyes. As if that toadying idiot would ever keep anything from Potter and Black. Granted, he wasn't as bad as Pettigrew, but 'Ingratiating' was his middle name.

"You're having me on," he said finally, shaking his head with narrowed eyes as he folded his arms over his chest. "Why do you want to swear me to secrecy now, for instance, when we've been having this conversation in front of five other people?" Of course, two of them were snoring loudly, in addition to the Muffliato spell he'd cast earlier, but still ... somebody could also be listening at the door. Not likely at one in the morning, he thought, frowning, as his inner voice began to argue with him. "Do you have any sort of proof ... besides knowing my nickname, that is?"

"I'm not having you on, Sev. I want to swear you to secrecy now because knowing that we are from the future is something that you deduced all on your own. I can still flat-out deny that we ever had this conversation and, pointedly, if anyone did ask, I could just as easily tell them that you approached me with this crazy hypothesis and I went along with it. Plain and simple. As for everything else that I could share with you, that will require your vow of secrecy." Draco shrugged lightly, knowing he had one over Severus right now.

"As for my proof, are you yet an Occlumens, Sev? I'll let you see into my head, that way, you know it's the blunt truth." Draco knew it was risky what he was offering, but he didn't really care. He needed to have this proved one way or another.

"I'd have to be a Legilimens for that," Severus whispered, frowning and shaking his head. For the moment, he didn't bother to try explaining how Maltian knew he was studying Occlumency. Of course, he'd never actually used the Legilimency spell yet, and he was a little hesitant to try without knowing the consequences if he botched the thing. He'd hate to accidentally Obliviate Maltian or something along those lines, because -- as selfish as it sounded -- he'd never get to the bottom of this that way. On the other hand, what did he have to lose by giving Maltian his word, really? Whom could he tell? He doubted even Sappho would believe such an outrageous tale. And he'd get much closer to the truth, much faster, if Maltian trusted him.

"Do you require an Unbreakable Vow," he asked, finally, raising an eyebrow, "or will a normal oath suffice?"

"Normal oath will suffice," Draco returned calmly, giving the other a calm, collected glance in exchange. "Aye, a normal oath will do. I won't be going into too much detail right now. That'll be for much later, once I know you can be trusted with even the basic of information."

"Just as well," Severus said, smirking. "I may not remember this conversation in the morning, as it is." He held out his hand so that he could shake Maltian's (or should he think of him as Malfoy, now?) in order to seal the deal on their quite normal oath. Of course, he could always see what he could weasel out of Cragwitch on the subject, though he'd have to be careful. Cragwitch wasn't the most potent ingredient in the cauldron, and dropping Erumpent-sized hints might be the only way to get him to tell the whole story...
