In the Common Room (open)
Layla sat, nose in a book and hand furiously taking notes on seemingly endless miles of parchment. She was surrounded on all sides by books. Some might find this incredibly stressful, but she was used to it and she was comfortable with it.

The castle was getting rather lonely, Layla thought as she mentally divided the average number of students staying by the four houses and realized just how small a number she would run into here. Of course, the new students made things more interesting. She had seen them around but not had a chance to talk to any of them extensively.

She was surprised to hear someone walk into the common room. Her head jolted up, but she caught herself in time to say a competent, "Hello!"

"Hello... Layla," Sappho answered back. "Feels kind of funny saying that. My auntie has the same name. Spelled with an, 'h,' though." She set some potion supplies down on the coffee table and sat on the sofa. "These don't smell too strongly, do they? I don't mean to stink up the Common room with my perfume."

"Oh! That's interesting. I don't see it much. My parents say it's from an Arabic poem about unrequited love. And no, the potions don't smell too much. I've barely even noticed. It's good you are making progress on your perfumes!" Layla never used perfume, but she had done a bit of research on the process of brewing perfumes. It seemed like an interesting discipline.

"Yes, I'm past the boiling-the-lard-off stage. That's always the trickiest. Now I just have to mix it and strain out the impurities," she said. Sappho began opening the bottles since Layla hadn't voiced any objections. She placed a funnel in one bottle, the poured the contents of another in it.

Layla looked on with fascination at the process. "What scent is that going to turn out to be?" She supposed that this was the mixing part, and the straining would come later. She continued trying to pinpoint the scent before Sappho answered her question.

She paused, turing to face Layla. "Blue lotus and Oriental poppy. They're my favourite flowers and it's a very Egyptian formula. I love all things Egyptian," she replied. Sappho finished the first round of pouring, stoppered the bottle, and shook it vigourously.
