Roger might not have been able to get away with shutting himself into his flat and sleeping away the frigid weeks he'd no doubt spend here waiting for his next assignment, but he could do the next best thing. One of his favorite parts about being home, whenever he managed a lengthy break, was getting into the habit of waking up at nine or ten and spending the entire morning in bed devouring his latest haul from the bookstore. That could be done in winter just as well as summer, with the addition of some cocoa (or a hot toddy, depending on the events of the night before). One just had to choose the right reading material. Being suddenly plunged back into London made him want something gloomy, something full of miserable fog and equally miserable people, something grey and gothic.
And so that was what he chose after poking around Flourish & Blotts for about twenty minutes - an operatic-looking novel that promised to be suitably bleak. He stacked it between two warring biographies of Oswald Beamish (there was nothing wrong with reading novels, of course, but one didn't care to advertise), and went to take his place in the back of the snaking queue. It seemed oddly empty in here - usually he managed to come just when the children were flooding the aisles and going over the shelves like locusts for schoolbooks - but judging by the number of customers, it would still take him some ten minutes to get to the counter. He did his best to look impatient. All he wanted to do was go home and keep company with a pot of tea. No doubt if he made everyone in front of him sufficiently uncomfortable, he'd be able to do so a little sooner.
