Adrian Pucey had been reading a lot of references to pirates lately in the journals, but for some reason he didn't understand why. When one of his friends had mentioned Daphne Greengrass's party, suddenly the scribbles about parrots and peg legs made sense. Adrian hadn't received an invite, but that never stopped him--he was going to crash the affair. His blood was pure, so Daphne should have invited him--their families ran in the same circle. Well, he'd repay a snub with a snub, all right.
Adrian swaggered onto the ship and took advantage of the Greengrass hospitality. He made sure to gorge himself on food and drink as much rum as possible. Throughout the evening he stalked through the crowd, catching glimpses of Daphne playing entertainer and hostess. At random times, she would break into song and dance with Eleanor Branstone. They sang impromptu sea shanties, cajoled the guests, and instigated bawdy sing-a-longs. Adrian lay in wait.
His opportunity came when Daphne and Eleanor took over the platform at the ship's bow to perform a formal song and dance. It was a theatrical number indeed, with the two of them dressed as pirates, singing "Fifteen Men on the Dead Man's Chest." The two depicted the lyrics as they sang, pretending to kill each other in the manner dictated by the song. The women even used their wands and cast magic to create the special effects. They strutted around on the platform in their heels as the rum circulated around the crowd. It was extravagant, and in Adrian's opinion quite cheesy.
"The skipper lay with his nob in gore,
Where the scullion's axe his cheek had shore,
And the scullion he was stabbed times four,
And there they lay, and the soggy skies,
Dripped down in up-staring eyes,
In murk sunset and foul sunrise,
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!"
During this refrain, Adrian had slowly mounted the stairs to the platform. He walked right over to Daphne and Eleanor with two tankards in his hands. And, right in the middle of the song, in front of the entire crowd, he splashed them with rum. "Yo ho ho, titless wenches!" he screamed.
