"Look at this adapter," said Hermione excitedly. "It turns our latent magical energy into electricity. We can play videogames here!"
Just what a "videogame" was, Sirius hadn't been sure. It didn't seem too bad at first. When she'd brought in a game that had lots of killing, with what looked like real blood and sounded like real screaming, he'd bolted from the room and started shaking, leaning against the wall of the kitchen. It took a few people to calm him down enough that he'd enter the parlor again. Hermione explained virtual reality to him and apologized, and that was that.
No one tried to get Sirius to play a game again until Hermione and the twins brought in an odd sort of drum set, two guitars, and a microphone.
"Just trying to make staying here a little easier," she said warmly. "Why don't you give it a try. This is a fun sort of virtual reality."
He couldn't hold a tune, and he couldn't press the drum's bass pedal while drumming—it was too pat-your-head rub-your-belly for him, he found. But the guitar, that wasn't so bad.
Eventually, he was wowing the rest of the Order with his awesome skills.
Playing Weird Sisters songs (and more, of course, including songs that he had loved before Azkaban) on a plastic guitar day in and day out may seem a bit lame, but it was all he had to get him up in the morning.
After he went through the veil, Harry began practicing too. He'd never be able to match Sirius's expertise, but it felt like every time he played he got a little closer to him. Like it was one of the few things he had left of him. Lame, but it got him up in the morning that summer.
