SILENT AFTERLIFE
a silent hill ij-based rp

P R E M I S E

For the people who are taken to the Otherworld of Silent Hill, life afterwards (indeed, if there is life at all) is changed dramatically. Their fates have been interwoven into the town forever, and eternity can last a very long time.

There is an Afterlife beyond death for these people -- yet it is not Heaven or Hell. Instead, the town they could never escape has reclaimed them, and will hold them inside forever.

The town is very similar to the way it was when they visited: misty and cold, with a thick, heavy fog falling over the town. Snow falls at times but never accumulates, and the streets are dim without the aid of the sun and patrolled by hellish monsters fueled by the town's dark background. And then, at times, untriggered and unpredictable, the town will change -- dark and hot, where rain falls and the aid of a flashlight is the only light one can hope for. In this world, the monsters are larger in number and far more deadly -- and shelter is the best thing to seek.

Your character, after their death, (whether in-game or after their escape from the town) finds themselves back in Silent Hill -- this time forever. If there is an escape from the town, why look for it? What will it lead to? Heaven? Hell? Or simply nothingness?

But being in Silent Hill presents problems, too -- namely, survival. Food and supplies must be found, a stand against the monsters must be taken, and alliances must be formed. If this is punishment from God, then it's one sick version of Purgatory.

B A C K G R O U N D

Silent Hill was a typical, quiet New England town, situated in southern Maine, far inland from the ocean. With a rich indeginous history, the small town hadn't always been such -- instead, Native Americans in the area had treated the land as a sacred place, rarely tread upon. They named the area "The Place of Sacred Spirits", a resting place not only for their dead ancestors, but also for the spirits they believed lived in the trees, rocks, and waters. However, it was not the residents of Silent Hill that took the land from the natives. Instead, there were a group of settlers that came before them. There are no records of those that lived in the area before, and the name the gave the town is also unknown. The only thing that is certain is that there was a group before, and that they, for reasons unknown, abandoned the town.

Later, Silent Hill became a prison town, holding many Civil War captives in an extensive prison built underground, beside the lake. Mercy was a forgien word to the infamous executioners known for their cruel tactics, and criminals were hung for every slight crime. However, prisoners were granted one final freedom -- the freedom to choose your death, between skewering or strangulation.

Then, disease brought by immigrants swept through the town, and two hospitals were built to handle the overflow of patients -- Alchemilla, and then Brookhaven on the other side of the vast lake. Under the murky waters, those that fell a victim of the diseases' terrible curse were dumped, in an effort to keep the virus from spreading to the living. Once only a small shack, Brookhaven grew and grew, until it became a large building. No longer needed as the disease began to break off, Brookhaven became a mental hospital, keeping the unstable from the outside world.

After such horrific events, the town's citizens began searching for release, and a reason to be. The people found God, though their beliefs were twisted, far from Christian. They soon discovered another advantage to the lake -- small, white flowers that grew in hordes around the banks. The blossoms produced seeds from which a powerfully addictive hallucinogen could be manufactured -- a drug the cult named White Claudia. Tightly tied in to the religion, the small group began to use the drug in their ceremonies, and the members of the town became hooked.

Then, as a sudden new group of people came to settle within the town, the old citizens hushed up about the religion, in fear of being murderously persecuted by the Christians, as one such member was, a woman named Jennifer, who later became a patron saint. A small chapel was even built for the newcomers, and many of the old began to attend in a fantastic attempt to cover-up. Soon the numbers of the cult were lessening and lessening, and the remaining had no where to turn.

However, this dark side of Silent Hill was further and further ignored, especially as tourism began to rise. A large, fancy hotel was built on the shore, named the Lakeview Hotel, as well as many smaller inns and motels to cater to the tourists' needs. The violent past of the prison was also covered up, and pamplets and travel brochures strived to paint a beautiful picture of Silent Hill -- a gorgeous, quaint, quiet little town, the perfect vacation spot, the perfect place to live, the perfect place to stay -- forever.

R U L E S

[+] Characters must stay active. The current minimum is every two weeks. This means that you must be posting in your journal, commenting in others journals, or somehow interacting within the scope of the RP. AIM logs are acceptable, but since we can’t always see that that’s happening, please make it known, either through an email or IM to the mods, or through a post to the OOC community if you’re currently working on a log. No one will be dropped without warning, so don't be afraid. However, if there's no sign of activity for two weeks, idle players will be warned.

[+] NO GODMODING. This is very easy to do in the scope of a Silent Hill RP. Please remember that your character is vulnerable and has weaknesses -- all of them, even the ones with supernatural powers. If I see any abuse of power or anyone refusing to let their character "take a hit", there will be serious consequences. Most of these characters are humans, and you've all seen how easy it is to get hit in the games.

[+] Please keep OOC issues just that - out of character. You don't have to like other players, but don't treat their characters like crap just because of this. There will be bickering between characters within the RP, but that does not mean the player is personally attacking you. If you feel otherwise, please approach a mod. Also, don’t bleed OOC knowledge into your characters. If your character doesn't know what a certain character is up to, but you do -- it doesn't matter! You can't mention it in your play.

[+] The posting of logs can be done whenever you wish; there's no rule that states you have to post them within a certain time period. That having been said, please feel free to work your own plots. We can’t be coming up with all the reasons your characters have to interact. Use creative license. Move your character about the board freely, and never hesitate to comment in others’ journals. Just keep moving. Don’t stagnate! The things that must be run by mods are huge plots that affect multiple characters or the overall integrity of the RP Premise. Feel free to come up with ideas of this nature, but never execute them without mod approval. We’re always open to new ideas, so please, feel free to contact us with your ideas! See here for more information about your journals and how other characters are able to see them and comment in them.

[+] Please keep your characters true to character! If we feel you are not doing so, we'll tell you.

[+] This rp is het, slash, and femslash friendly. HOWEVER. Due to issues we've discovered in other rps, you should try to be aware of what other players like. IF IN DOUBT, ASK (If this doesn't make sense, please ask for clarification.)

[+] You may reserve a character, if you'd like. But only for two weeks. If you haven't applied for the character by then, then up for grabs they go!

[+] At the moment, we are allowing one character per player. This will mostly likely change to two, but first we need to see if you can keep up with your first. If you've been here a while, and you want another character, let me know!

[+] Please let us know if you're going on hiatus. Also make a note of it in the OOC community so everyone can be aware.

[+] Proper spelling and grammar are required in logs. Please proofread. Please use a spell check. Please. Please. Please. Personal journals are another affair. Make your spelling and grammar reflect the character. Don’t make a young child with a lower intellect use the same language as a scholar. This relates back to keeping your characters in character and using common sense.

[+] If you have any issues, feel free to contact the mods with questions/concerns/suggestions.
