She had been in good spirits for a time after they had left the park. The note from James, the polite company, and the promise of a goal, a destination to go to. It didn't last for long. The town was eerie and still as they walked along Nathan Ave., which hugged the shoreline of the vast lake next to the park. She was surprised that there were no people, no cars, no sounds other than the steps of their feet along the pavement. On multiple occasions Mary had to avert her eyes from the gray mist ahead to look beside her and be sure that Henry was still walking nearby. It wasn't until they had made their way to the back of the Silent Hill Historical Society, where a few boats were docked, that she began to grow visibly unsettled again.
The mist over the lake was so thick that she could feel the fog creeping over her skin. What actually bothered her, however, was the amount of lake water surrounding the row boat and the potential reflections it carried across its surface. During the time that they had undone the ropes and managed to work a pair of oars into the dark water, Mary made it a point to keep her eyes inside the boat or far up and beyond it. Only when they had struck out into the water and the shore was swallowed by the mist, did she begin to grow anxious to see the other side. After a few long and tense minutes of empty direction and uncertainty, there was a vague guide.
They went towards the light.
By the time the wooden vessel thudded hollowly with the dock at the other side of the lake, be it minutes or hours, Mary wasn't about to turn around and go back the way they had come. If anything, she would sooner walk around it than go through it given the second chance.
"I almost thought that we would be wandering forever," The woman quietly uttered her telltale musings. Mary had climbed up from the boat to find her feet again. Her eyes could make out the formidable silhouette of the structure looming before them, heart tugging towards the Lake View Hotel.
