Bill Weasley ([info]infit_bill) wrote in [info]sic_infit,

Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Characters: Bill Weasley, Molly Weasley, Nymphadora Tonks
Date: 19 September 1999
Location: Tonk's 'fake' flat
Rating: Low
Summary: Bill shows up for a painful day of shopping, and inadvertently meets his mum.
Status: In Progress

Bill wasn't really looking forward to the shopping trip, but it was rare enough that Kate asked him for any kind of help unsolicited and he didn't want to pass up on that. And besides that, he knew Kate's shopping style tended toward 'whatever looks good first' and he wanted to make sure they ended up with some actual quality stuff. But since he intended to be thorough, he really didn't want to have a four-year-old with a short attention span around for what was sure to be a very dull trip.

When he got to Kate's apartment he knocked on the door and waited for her to answer, idly wondering what her mother was like. He'd never met the woman before and hadn't even heard Kate talk about her much. He didn't expect that it would even see her much this time, if he did at all, but it did make him wonder about Kate's family. They usually talked about his family whenever the subject came up.

Tonks had put the finishing touches on Molly's glamours less than twenty minutes earlier, and she did one last check before she morphed into Kitty. "You look brilliant," she said, giving her a reassuring smile. Part of her was terrified Bill would take one look at Molly and see her for who she really was, but she knew she was being silly. Or at least she hoped she was. Mostly, however, she just wanted Bill to make a good impression, to give Molly something to hold onto.

"Zee, Bill's here," she called down the hall, where Mackenzie was playing with her toys. She looked at Molly. "Go ahead and take her to the safehouse when we leave, and I shouldn't be too long. But in case it does turn into an all day thing, well." Molly knew how to care for her, and honestly, Tonks was just being a worrier.

With a glance in the mirror, she tucked her hair behind her ears and after casting spells to ensure it really was Bill, she cracked open the door. "Wotcher," she said brightly, seeing him. She opened the door all the way, gesturing for him to come inside. "Mercy's getting ready and hopefully putting her toys away." This bit was said louder than the rest.

Turning to Molly, she gave her a reassuring smile. "Mum, this is Bill, Bill, this is my mother, Anna Jameson."

Bill stepped into the flat and automatically glanced down the hall toward Mercy's room, but she was being a good girl and (supposedly) doing what her mother said she was. He nodded to Kate and when she introduced her mother he turned to Anna and gave her a warm smile. "It's nice to meet you Mrs. Jameson," he said, extending a hand for a shake. She looked like a nice enough woman, entirely average, which he thought a little strange for the mother of a woman like Kate. "I've heard good things about you." A lie, but an innocent enough one.

Molly wasn’t sure if she had ever been as nervous in her life as she was at the moment that Tonks- no, Kitty, she reminded herself- opened the door. She hadn’t looked in the mirror after the glamours had been put on her, too terrified of recognizing even the smallest feature in her face that she was sure if she noticed Bill would.

Seeing him, she wanted for a moment to fall to the floor and have a good sob, maybe finish it off with a nice cup of tea. Here he was, her son, alive and well. There were family features in his face that she recognized, little things in his build that screamed Weasley to her. But when he extended his hand to her, when recognition didn’t dawn on his face, she came back to her senses and shook his hand.

“Hello Bill,” she managed to smile just slightly, having practiced this many times during the day. She kept the quiver out of her voice, kept back the urge to hang onto his hand, stifled the overwhelming urge she had to pull him into a hug and refuse to let him go. “It’s nice to finally meet you.” The small smile was magnified a thousand times over in her eyes. “Why thank you,” she glanced at Kitty, trying to keep her smile in place. “I’ve heard good things about you as well.”

Bill chuckled slightly and kept up the same pleasantly warm tone, but was put a little on edge by this woman. He wasn't sure what it was about her, probably the way she seemed tenser than the situation called for. He figured it was probably just because he was the man who had inadvertently knocked up her daughter. Twice. That couldn't have put him fully in her good graces.

"Somehow I doubt that, ma'am. But thank you for lying to me all the same."

He glanced at Kate, unsure of if she had something else to do or if they were going to leave right away.

Tonks hung back, letting Molly have her moment. So far so good, and if Bill didn't recognise her immediately, then there was hope it would work out.

Catching Bill's look, she raised an eyebrow. "Don't look at me. We're waiting on the little diva to emerge." Though Mackenzie had been given very specific instructions to put her toys away as slowly as she could. "They're going out," explained Tonks, glancing at Molly. "And I'd rather we all leave at once."

Glancing back and forth between the two, she said as casually as she could, "So, any questions for Bill? Given everything that's happened lately and all," she added, poking her rounding belly.

“How’re you liking fatherhood? Ready for the next one?” Molly ventured, pleasant as possible. The subject of children couldn't help but bring a smile to her face, so long as she wasn't talking about her own. She had spent the majority of her morning thinking up safe questions that weren’t too forward but still answered things that she was dying to know about him. She placed her hand on Kate’s arm, giving it a rub more to reassure herself that she was indeed on stable ground more than anything. Molly wanted to know every minute detail, but she knew that in this situation, being the relative stranger that she was, she really couldn’t press for details.

Bill was pleasantly surprised to find her bringing up that subject in such neutral terminology. To be honest, he'd expected her to be a little more hostile, but he glanced over at Kate (and her belly) before answering. "It's...unexpected would be understatement, I guess. But it's great so far. I love kids, and Mercy's just an angel. I guess you already know that, though, don't you?"

"I do." Molly smiled warmly. "Mercy is wonderful. She's such a clever girl." She agreed, grinning like the doting grandmother she was. Talking about how wonderful her granddaughter was was one of Molly's favorite subjects. She looked thoughtful a moment, wondering what else she could get away with asking him. "Ready to look after a baby?" she raised an eyebrow. Babies were an entirely different ordeal than small children like Mackenzie.

"I'm not sure I'll ever be ready for something like that, but I think we're about as ready as we're going to get. And I've got Kate and she's got you, so that's all good, right?" He gave her his most charming smile and rocked awkwardly on the heels of his feet. "How may toys does Mercy have?" he asked Kate.

Tonks had placed her hand over Molly's and squeezed reassuringly. She was doing just fine, and really, Bill seemed to be clueless, so it all worked out well.

"We'll see what Bill really thinks about it when it's three in the morning and it's his turn to change the baby's nappy," she said cheekily. At the mention of Mackenzie, she sighed and called over her shoulder, "Mercy, let's get a move on, babe."

A few seconds later, a grinning Mackenzie skipped out of her room, stopping next to Molly and taking her hand. "Gramma and me have the whole day together," she said to Bill, as if this were a Very Special Occasion.

"Yes we do." Molly squeezed the girl's hand, grinning at her as she leaned down to kiss Mackenzie's forehead and give her shoulder a pat. She hated to do it, but she knew it was time to say goodbye to her son. "Well, it was nice meeting you, Bill. Hopefully I'll see you again and get to know you a little better?" Molly said it as easily as she could, her small granddaughter's hand in hers keeping her rooted to the spot.
