Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Characters: Kirley Duke, Caradoc Dearborn
Date: 19 September 1999
Location: The Black Wizard
Rating: Low
Summary: Kirley goes out and about at a show
Status: Complete

Kirley was quite enjoying himself at the Switchblade Seven show, enjoying the performance from the relatively-VIP upstairs level of the club. 'Relatively' being the operative phrase, since it was a small venue and the security people at the stairs tended to let in anyone who wanted to go up stairs and slipped them an extra coin. Hardly anyone on either side of the arrangement minded. In the relative gloom of the club, few people recognized Kirley as being from the Weird Sisters, but he basked in the attention of the few who did and made a great show of buying everyone round after round of drinks.

After his friend's set was done, Kirley leaned over the railing to the second floor and clapped and jeered the loudest. A DJ came on afterward, playing music that was much quieter in comparison to the show that had just ended so that the remaining patrons could actually hear each other as they socialized, and Kirley headed to the opposite end of the bar from where he'd been hanging out, seeking new people to talk to. He took an empty space next to a rather pale man who looked about his age and ordered a firewhiskey from the bartender before turning to his neighbor. "Enjoy the show?"

Despite knowing venturing out into public venues was asking for a mass of trouble, staying locked up in the Safe House was going to slowly kill him. Even being able to escape to Hestia's flat wasn't the same as being able to go out, as Caradoc was a social man by nature and liked to be around people.

For this reason he had decided to attend the show he had seen Kirley Duke advertise, thinking that it be hard to point his face out in a dark room, at a rock concert, where people were too busy enjoying the music. He also highly doubted this was a place Ministry officials are Death Eaters would frequent, and he knew if he needed to make an escape, the entrances weren't far away.

Caradoc had been left alone most of the night, nursing glasses of water to the annoyance of the bartender. When he heard a voice address him Caradoc looked over with a hint of surprise, but responded with a friendly tone, "Yeah. Not bad. Bass guitarist was a little slow on the pick up, but all in all wasn't a bad show."

"Oh, you noticed that, too?" Kirley asked, showing delighted surprise. "Do you play, then? Most people don't really care for the little details like that."

The bartender delivered Kirley's drink and he toasted his new companion before taking a drink of it. "Bassist is new, though, so I guess they're still sounding him out. He'll get better."

"I play from time to time," Caradoc said with a small smile as he looked down at his glass of water for a moment, "Not bass though. If the guy is new, I should cut him some slack then... it would be a bitch to learn a whole set of new songs and be trying to keep pace with guys that know the music as well as they know their mothers."

Caradoc smirked and looked back at Kirley. His face was familiar, like he had seen it somewhere, but not in a way that made Caradoc feel he had met him. He perplexed over this for a moment then asked, "What do you play?"

"I'm lead guitarist in my band," he said, sounding a little smug as he said it since it was clear the other man didn't recognize him. He was vain enough, however, to assume that he would realize it soon enough. "Been playing with them since I was in school, too. God, but I love it more than anything. What about you?"

Lead guitarist in a band? Well that would explain why he looked familiar. Caradoc had been out of the UK so long, some times he felt like a bit of an idiot. This guy was probably famous, and he was sitting here staring at the man rather blankly. Hopefully he wasn't a primadonna and would get offended by the fact Caradoc didn't know who he was.

"I'm the lead guitarist in my own personal band, called 'Bandless'." Caradoc said with a smirk, "Or, aka, I'm a solo show."

Kirley laughed, loud and hard, probably a little louder than a perfectly sober person would have. "Ah, that's alright. We all go through those days. Hell, I was writing jingles for the Daily Prophet for a while before the band actually took off." He slapped the other man on the back. "What's your name? If you really want to play, I could probably get you hooked up with someone."

Caradoc had to brace himself a little on the bar when he felt his hand come down. Caradoc gave him a surprised blink but followed it with a good natured smile, "My name is Carter, and as much as I greatly appreciate the offer, my days of being a rockstar are long past. I reserve that career for my dreams." He laughed a little and took a sip of his water.

"So, I know I should have probably clued into this by now..." Caradoc noticed a couple young woman squeaking and pointing in their general direction, obviously at Kirley, "Who are you, exactly?"

"Kirley Duke," he said, holding his hand out for a firm shake. "Don't worry about it. I've got enough attention elsewhere." He nodded at the squeely girls behind them and gave them flirty little smile, but turned right back to Carter. He liked to encourage the fans, but not too much. "Have you really not heard of us, though? Weird Sisters?"

Caradoc didn't feel too stupid, because he was aware of the band. He gave him a nod once he had turned back from his squealing fangirls and shot a look in their direction in mild amusement before looking back at Kirley, "Yeah, I've heard of you. I only just recently moved back to the UK though, so I'm a little behind the times on the latest pop culture. Heard your stuff though, pretty god. Much better than some of the shit being turned out nowadays."

"Well, high praise indeed," Kirley said with a laugh. "I'm a little biased, but I'd have to agree with you. So what do you do on your day job, then, if it's not living up the music?"

Caradoc hesitated for only a moment before he answered casually, "Oh, a little of this, a little of that. Sort of a jack-of-all-trades at the moment. A working hand for hire, you could say. England isn't exactly how I left it when I went away, so I'm still trying to adjust to a culture much changed." He kept his tone neutral, not wanting to convey an emotional opinion on what had become of the UK, considering he had no idea where Kirley's allegiances were.

"Much changed is a little mild," Kirley said sourly. He wasn't much afraid of reprisal, since his status meant he would only get in trouble for saying something out-right traderous. And besides that, they were in a halfer-friendly establishment and he'd been drinking all night, so he was pretty comfortable showing some dissent. "Much changed is a ninner's way of putting it. How long you been away from England then? And where did you go? I've traveled around a bit, but it was always on tour and you can't never really see anything on a tour. Too busy."

Caradoc took note of his tone, and his answer, with mild curiousity. He cupped his glass of water for a moment in thought, then gave another small shrug, "Been away for... 10 years or so," Caradoc fibbed, shaving a couple of years off, "Was all over Europe, traveling, visiting family, working a little. Spent a lot of time in the eastern border countries. And much changed is a diplomatic way of putting it, especially when you don't know who's ears are tuned in." Doc added quietly. The fact also remained his face could grab attention, and the last thing he wanted was to direct eyes towards him. The idea he was sitting beside a rockstar suddenly made him anxious... all the guy did was draw attention.

Kirley waved his hand dismissively, although the man's comments did serve to remind him that he should be a little more careful. He downed the rest of his drink and made a face. "Damn the day when a man can't say what's on his mind," he muttered under his breath. "Something fucking wrong with that." A little louder he added, "This place isn't so bad, though. People care about what's important here. You know," he pointed to himself, "like how sexy you are."

Caradoc had to smile a little at the man, even if his words were partially influenced by alcohol. Caradoc gave the small place a once over with his eyes, then gave Kirley an obviously 'oh please' look at the reference to being sexy, "I'll refrain from even commenting on that, because the last thing I worry about is how sexy you are. I think your gaggle of drooling fan girls worry and obsess enough over it for all of England." He gestured over his shoulde,r to wear the squeaking girls were still lingering around like vultures.

"Oh, come on Carter. You know I'm sexy." He looked back at the fangirls and waved his fingers at them again, sending them into a flurry of giggling and fluttering. "They're nothing compared to you, my dear," he said, teasing and leaning in a little closer to taunt the girls. "Should I buy you a drink?"

As Kirley leaned in, Caradoc immediately leaned back. His nose immediately wrinkled, and he felt oddly dirty just at the mere suggestion of him buying him anything after making that sort of advance.

"Nope, you should back up, and not invade my space," Caradoc offered with a hint of amusement to soften the words slightly, "I can buy my own drinks, mate."

Kirley laughed loudly and slapped the bar with one hand, leaning back in his chair. "Calm down, mate. I'm just messing with you. Believe it or not the ladies love it. Can't ever figure out why, but whatever. Besides, my wife would kill me if I cheated on her." He winked and called over the bartender again. "Another one, and one more of whatever the guy next to me is having. On my tab."

Caradoc made another face. He had heard that before, how some woman got off on the idea of men loving on other men. He didn't exactly get it, but thankfully Kirley was playing around. Last thing Caradoc needed was to have to push off a gay advance, it would traumatize him for days.

When Kirley offered the drink, Caradoc shot a quick look at the bartender. The glass of water, at Doc's request, had been camoflauged to look like vodka on the rocks. The bartender got the drift immediately and just gave a nod.

"Thanks," Doc said, wondering what the guy would think once he figured out his tab was being charged with one very big glass of ice water, "So married? What does your wife think of the rockstar life?"

Kirley shrugged and nursed his new drink when he got it. "Hard to tell. She says she's cool with it, but you know how women are." He elbowed Carter and winked at him. "Or do you? Got a woman somewhere or should I..." He nodded backward at the fangirls. "Hook you up? Don't mind at all. Someone should get to enjoy all that, ya know?"

Caradoc looked over at the women Kirley had gestured at, and quickly shook his head, "Noooo, thank you. I have a lovely young woman to call my own." The mere thought of Hestia made a slightly shy smirk touch his lips, which he tried to hide by finishing off his glass of 'vodka'. "But I feel ya... women tell you one thing, but the thing they tell you is actually a veiled attempt to tell you something else entirely... and Merlin forbid if you don't get it."

Caradoc raised an eyebrow, but didn't deny it. He took a sip of the new glass that was set in front of him and shrugged, "I'm man enough to admit it. I love a woman who makes these dark times bareable. I'm not ashamed to say I'd bend over backwards to make sure I keep her as happy as she makes me."

He glanced side long at Kirley, "You're a rockstar, who has women throwing themselves at him, yet you have a wife who scares you out of taking advantage. I think there's a whip being cracked on you, even if it isn't being cracked hard."

Kirley chuckled. "Never said it was a bad thing, and never said she was the one keeping me from taking advantage. If I wanted to, I would." He finished he's drink and slammed it down, but refrained from ordering another. He was reaching his limit, after which he'd start doing stuff that would be regretted in the morning. "She'd still kill me for it, but that wouldn't keep me from doing it. But you're right, wouldn't have it any other way." He jerked his thumb backward at the girls. "Someone should still take advantage of that, though."

Caradoc glanced over, "I'm sure someone will, once they have a few more drinks and they get the hint that you aren't going to go over there and to fulfill their wildest fantasies. Something tells me those young women never have much of a problem finding someone to partake in what they seem to enjoy..." Caradoc made a face as she watched one of the girls adjusted her cleavage, "uh, what they advertise."

Caradoc looked away and shook his head, "Oh well. As long as they're enjoying themselves. hard to do that this day and age."

Kirley was about to point out that he didn't have any trouble having fun, but changed his mind at the last moment. "Which kind of way did you get burned?" he asked instead. "You a halfer?" Not any more diplomatic a statement, really, but Kirley was not given to diplomacy even when he was sober.

The statement, and the question, went over Caradoc's head. He stared blankly at Kirley and felt momentarily embaressed for not understanding what he meant. Caradoc's brow creased and his head cocked faintly to the side, "Uh... what?"

"Halfer. Halfblood. You know." He waved his glass around like the gesture was supposed to say something, though really he was just moving to move. "Not that I care, just something must have bit your butt. S'that why you left the country then?"

"Actually no... I'm pure, technically speaking..." Caradoc admitted. That had always been odd to admit for him, for some reason. he was only pure thanks to the definition of the word, considering he was a child of two Halfbloods. It had always been odd to call himself Pure when he knew his parents were Half. he also knew it was hard to define yourself as 'pure' when the Ministry liked to describe you as 'halfbreed'.

"Who hasn't gotten kicked in the ass in some way over the past two decades?" Caradoc said honestly, "Except those who came out on top, of course. Leaving the country was precipitated by a little of that, but by no means was the only reason."

Kirley made a face and shrugged a little. On the surface of things, it looked like he was one of those who had 'come out on top,' but he couldn't comment too much on the fact that he'd been kicked enough himself. "Ain't that the truth. Fucking bastards. They make really shitty audiences, too, by the way. Not like this place, ya know?" He patted Carter on the shoulder, more pushed him since he was a little off. "Got to encourage places like this. You know. Need more people like you and me. Those other kinds of purebloods, there's not a whole bunch of them, you know?"

Caradoc had to brace himself a little on the bar again, but looked over with a bit of surprise. He wasn't used to people eing quite this candid, and he wasn't sure if it was the booze, or if it really was the venue. The place was small, and out of the way, which was why Caradoc felt he could risk coming here in the first place.

"You mean the purists? No... in numbers, they are quite small. They just happen to have gotten one up on the rest of the world when we weren't looking." Caradoc mumbled, trying to hide the bitterness though he didn't completely suceed, "I agree though... we need more places like this. Places where people can come and not be afraid of blinking the wrong way, and getting shipped off to never be seen again."

"They've got really cheep booze, too. We need more places with really cheep booze. You know who's happy? Drunk people. So therefore, we need more drunk people around here." Kirley nodded decisively, as if he'd just solved all the country's problems in one statement.

The Black Wizard was fairly notorious among it's patrons for being lax when it came to whistle blowing, otherwise even Kirley wouldn't have been saying half the stuff he was, but he felt comfortable enough in his favorite bar to say anything short of blatant treachery. Hell, the Weird Sisters had played their first gig under a label in that bar.

"...I love it here. Band got launched here."

Caradoc wanted to mention that drunk people were also sometimes the most violent, obnoxious and reckless of people as well, but bit his tongue. Drunk people could also be the most carefree too, until of course the hangover settled in the next morning and all that drunken glee turned into a pounding migraine.

"Did it?" Caradoc said casually, "It's a nice little joint. I guess you have a soft spot for the place then, yes?"

"Big ol softie. That's me. But don't tell anyone, 'kay? Apparently I'm supposed to be cool." He chuckled like he'd just made the greatest joke in the world, and continued to chuckle until the bartender brought him another drink without being asked. Kirley picked it up but just held it at eye level and looked at it for a moment before putting it down in front of Carter. "Maybe you should take that one. I'm already going to have a hard time getting home. Anna'd never let me live it down if I got all splinched again."

He leaned on the bar a little heavily as he looked at his neighbor, looking at him with a drunkard's version of a piercing look. He was dissatisfied, enough to have left the country at least once, and now was back. Possibly Knights material, but Kirley knew better to probe in that direction. There was no way he could pull it off the way he was already running his mouth on.

"You're an alright bloke, you know that Carter? And you really hold your drinks. We should do this again sometime so we can start on equal footing; I'll drunk you under the table then. Got to defend my reputation."

Caradoc smirked a little at Kirley, and looked at the drink the man had pushed in his direction. He glanced down at his glass of water, and with a smug little smirk looked to the drunken rockstar and murmured, "I haven't had a drop of alcohol all night, Kirley. Your reptutation is safe."

Kirley tried to look offended at Carter's comment, but he didn't feel it and couldn't fake it well enough to avoid just looking silly. "Alright, but now only you, me, and the bartender know that, so my comment still stands. We've got to do this again. You, me, and the bartender. That sounded weird."

Caradoc smirked over at the man and finished off the glass of water he had been cradling. He hesitated for a moment, knowing forming any kind of friendship, or even vague connection to people outside of the Order was a tricky and dangerous business. Especially whent he said individual was famous. The man seemed the kind of guy though Caradoc could find himself having a pretty good time with, and as long as he was careful, it should be okay.

"Sure." Caradoc finally answered, "I'd like that."

"Greatness," Kirley said, and pulled out a few gold coins to pay his tab, which by that point had grown to be quite tremendous with the number of drinks he'd bought for other people. The bartenders generally liked Kirley, because when he was drunk enough he didn't like numbers and would just throw out enough coins to cover any tab, allowing them to keep the rest as gratuity.

"Got one of those journal things? Dead handy, that. Can keep in touch with people like you without giving Anna the fits because everyone and their mother is firecalling at the house."

"Like I said. Dead handy." Kirley got to his feet remarkably well given his state of intoxication, slapped Carter on the back one last time, and said, "See you round. And I meant it about drinking you under next time."

He stepped back from the bar and made sure to talk to the girls that had been hanging around for a few minutes before he left the bar and headed home.
