Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Characters: Lily Potter and Molly Weasley
Date: 12 September 1999
Location: The Order Safehouse
Rating: Low
Summary: Two friends having a chat
Status: In Progress

Lily hummed softly to herself as she worked in the kitchen, not cooking anything but attempting to get baked on potions-gunk off some pots that had been 'borrowed' for experimentation. Lily had never been much of a cook, preferring to leave that to the other members of the Order who were better suited, but she was a stickler for keeping an orderly household and once she got done scolding Connor for using the pots instead of an actual cauldron she applied herself happily enough to setting it back to rights.

When Molly came into the kitchen with her, she looked over her shoulder and smiled in welcome. "Afternoon, Molly. I'll be out of your way in just a minute."

"Hello," Molly replied warmly, pleased to see her friend. It had been a long morning of reading and rereading all the notes that she had accumulated in regards to her children, and Molly wasn't particularly keen on starting dinner just yet. "Not to worry," she said, taking a seat at the table. "I'm not going to get started on dinner for another hour." That, Molly reasoned, and she had to think about what exactly she was going to make.

Lily nodded pleasantly and went back to her washing, which had finally progressed beyond the 'chipping away at solid burned stuff' phase and was now mostly experimenting with what charms would get the stains off. When Molly went to the table she looked back at her a second time, slightly concerned. Molly coming into the kitchen and not to cook usually meant she wanted to talk. "You alright, Molly? What have you been doing?"

"Yes, I'm quite alright, I've just been... reading. What's that you're cleaning?" As she said this she pointed her wand at the kettle and it started pouring out a cup of tea for her. "Tea?" Molly queried, looking up at Lily as her own cup settled in front of her.

Lily nodded and held up the pot to show her the inside. "Connor's latest experiment. If we're not careful he'll turn out just like Harry." Harry's habit of constantly inventing things, with plenty of trail and error in the process, was well known in the safe house. "I'm still not sure what it was supposed to be."

She finished the pot and set it aside to dry, taking the tea from Molly gratefully. "What were you reading? Something on your mind?"

“My notes. About the children.” She didn’t feel the need to elaborate, as everyone who knew her knew exactly what children she would have notes about. “It’s just so difficult to keep a level head.” Molly frowned, staring down into her cup of tea. “I know where two of them are and I can’t go get them and force them to include me as part of their life.” She sighed. It went against all of her maternal instincts to sit back while she was so close to having her children in her arms again.

"Oh," Lily said slowly, sobering significantly. She could never imagine what Molly and Arthur had to go through, since the thought of loosing her sons or James was her greatest fear.

She sat at the table with Molly, her tea in one hand her other reaching out to hold Molly's. "What have you found out so far?" she asked. She knew they'd found their daughter and oldest sons, but nothing more than that.

Molly tried to smile bracingly, but she couldn’t quite manage to get it to reach her eyes. “We’re still trying to gather information on Ginny.” That was an understatement, as Molly had been voraciously reading every Daily Prophet she could get her hands on, looking for a trace of her daughter. “It doesn’t sound like we have a very good chance of contacting Bill…” She frowned into her teacup, hating that she couldn’t go give the boy a good shake back to his senses. “But we’re rather optimistic with Charlie.” A little smile tugged at her lips. She and Arthur had to discuss it further, but with the information Tonks had given them, it seemed like Charlie was going to be the first child they got to contact. The first one she might get to hold in her arms again.

"Charlie, huh? Have you seen him yet, have a plan?" She tried to sound encouraging, hoping that perhaps there was something she could help with. She couldn't really think of anything, but then again that was born mostly of not fully knowing what was going on. "Maybe something I can help with?"

"Do you have any idea how to approach him?" Molly asked, holding back a laugh because the situation seemed so ridiculous. "I haven't the faintest clue what to tell him, my own son!" It was something Molly often agonized over, lying awake at night and playing out scenarios in her head.

Lily had to admit that was a hard one to ponder over - there didn't appear to be a really easy way to come out with it. "Have you thought about just sending him an owl explaining things? That would seem the safest way to do things, can't be traced back to you if something goes wrong, but then if he's agreeable you can set up a meeting." She paused, trying to think of anything else that might work and coming up blank. "I guess there's not really a good way to word it, though, is it? He's not...I mean, he's not with the Ministry is he?"

"He doesn't work for the Ministry, but we're not sure how he feels about... well, much of anything. If we owl him, he could lie." Molly hated to think that her own son could lie, but within all reason anything was possible. "Could ask us to meet him somewhere and turn us in to the Ministry." She frowned. The very idea of any of her own children turning against her in such a matter was physically painful.

Lily nodded and squeezed her hand. "Yes, but that's possible with anything you might try. At least if you set something up over owl, maybe you can set the time and place and make sure no one else tags along? You know James and I will help you out if you need, right?"

"Of course." Molly nodded, trying to smile but failing miserably. "It's all just so... I want them all back in my arms, and I want them to know I love them- and they could all be like Bill, they could all want nothing to do with Arthur and I." A few tears found their way down Molly's cheeks. Finding out about Bill and his feelings towards them had been one of Molly's worst fears confirmed.

"Now, Molly," Lily said soothingly, taking the older woman's hand in both of hers. "You can't think like that. You'll just drive yourself crazy. It's not helping anything to go on like that. And I'm sure Bill can be brought around, if you can find a way to just talk to him. Or maybe get Charlie on your side first?"

"I know, we're going to try with him first, most likely. It's just so difficult..." she sighed, resisting the urge to pull out her magical clock and show Lily just how maddening it was. How she could watch the clock all day and know that they were alive, that they were working or traveling or studying but she couldn't know anything about them, their personalities, their accomplishments and their failings. The situation was, Molly was sure, slowly driving herself and Arthur mad.
