Characters: Theodore Nott and Nymphadora Tonks
Date: 10 September 1999
Location: The Order Safehouse
Rating: TBD
Summary: Tonks is packing, and she and Theo have a chat
Status: In Progress

Tonks sat in the middle of the living room, taking up more than her fair share of space. Around her were scattered folders, books, and five years worth of clothing that she was sorting through, deciding what to keep and what to trash. It was late, so she didn't feel too guilty about taking up living room space, but it was still strange to have her life so on display.

She'd made the decision to start packing properly, or at least start sorting through things, wanting to move into the new house by October. That would give her at least two and a half months to prepare for the baby, possibly three, and it meant Mackenzie wouldn't have to get used to a new house and a baby brother all at the same time.

Problem was, after working for ten hours a day minimum, she was exhausted, and even this was enough to zap her energy. So she settled against the base of the couch, sprawled out and glaring at the piles in front of her. How was it possible to accumulate so much stuff?

Theo had been kicked out of the library, the kitchen, the basement office, and even his own room. He'd been made to move continually throughout the day, either ordered from a space by someone with more authority in the house or just made uncomfortable enough that he'd left on his own. To be fair, the people in the kitchen hadn't minded him being in there, nor at the people in the library, but their general noise was enough to drive him out anyway. And with his roommate trying to sleep in their tiny shared room, it didn't seem right to stay in there with the candles burning.

God, but he'd sell his soul to have his own room back again.

When he left the kitchen with his stack of books and maps he headed for the livingroom, thinking that surely, surely there was no one left in the house to be crowding that room.

Instead he found Nymphadora Tonks in there, surrounded by what appeared to be every item she owned.

Still, the living room was large enough and she looked quiet enough that he figured they could share the space. He gave her a somewhat half-hearted apologetic look and picked his way around the boxes and toward the couch on the opposite side of the room. "Hope you don't mind some company. Full house."

Tonks looked up when she heard Theo's voice, and she gave him a tired smile. "Wotcher," she said, hoping she was mustering up enough enthusiasm to not make him feel unwanted. "I don't mind company at all. It has been a bit tight around here lately, hasn't it?"

She nodded toward the boxes. "Won't be full much longer. Mackenzie and I are taking off in a few weeks, though I reckon that'll only free up one room."

Theo perked up at the mention of a free room - Tonks had a pretty fair sized room - but immediately after remembered that he was hardly at the front of the line for a singles room. He shrugged slightly sat heavily on the couch, setting to by arranging his things on the seat next to him. He had a couple of theory books that were carted around almost for nostalgia at this point, and a stack of extremely dry books about a variety of topics, all of them published by the Ministry, and all of them with oh-so-helpful little tidbits about Ministry facilities that the publishers probably didn't ever imagine being interesting.

"Why're you moving out?" he asked, absently pulling folded maps out of the middle of books. "The crowd chase you off?"

He didn't know much about Nymphadora Tonks, except that she reported to Dumbledore and worked somewhere in the 'real world' despite living the safe house.

She shook her head. "Not really. I mean, it's crowded and all, but it's not so bad. I reckon Dumbledore can always expand if need be." When he asked why they were leaving, she poked her rounding belly. "One room for three people is a little much."

Tonks eyed the stack of books he had with him. "So what's all that for? Pet project?"

"At this point it feels more like busy work," he said. It had been almost three weeks since his conversation with Harry, and aside from occasional questions, the other boy hadn't said anything about what they'd discussed in the back yard. Theo had given him a broad out line of the kinds of targets they should hit if they went according to his plan, but on the off-chance that anything came of it he'd started researching actual, physical targets and finding out anything he could about them.

If Harry failed him, he could always take the plan up himself, although he didn't want to do that.

"Just something someone mentioned. I'm looking into it, seeing if anything comes of it, you know? Probably nothing."

"What sort of thing are you looking into?" she said curiously. She always tried to keep up on what all was going on in the house, at least as much as she could. It was easier to know what was and wasn't important in her spying work when she knew what the Order wanted to know.

She hauled herself back into a proper sitting position and started to go through Mackenzie's baby clothes, or at least what was left after she gave much of it away to other parents in the safehouse. "I bet it isn't nothing."

Theo glanced up at her from what he was looking at, then back to the maps and shrugged again. Working just one-on-one, he didn't mind Tonks' scrutiny as much as he would if it were a group of people prying.

"Ministry things we can attack. Not the important places, like the...the camps," he was almost to the point where he could mention them without stuttering, damnit, "or anything like that. Warehouses. Shipping ports. Administrative buildings. Stuff that we don't really need, and they know we don't need it, so they don't defend it."

She hesitated, not sure what to say about that. She could see flaws in the plan, but if it was just at its preliminary stage, just an idea, she didn't want to be an arse about pointing them out.

"Why are you going after the smaller, less-used buildings?" she said, trying to keep her voice as light and curious as possible. "I mean, don't we have people on the inside in the Ministry? Wouldn't it be better for the Order to make a statement that the Daily Prophet is forced to report on?"

"Sure, if you want to get people killed and accomplish jack shit in the process," Theo said, spreading out his map for her. "And that's if you can get anyone to even go on such a mission in the first place. Too many people would tell you it's a suicide mission. But," he pointed on his map to some of the more spaced out targets he'd marked, the ones in the backhills, "attack in seemingly useless places, the ones with no security? It's an easy mark. In and out, no one gets hurt on either side. Except it'll scare the Ministry. If we're attacking everything, for no reason, then they'll have to spread thin to cover everything. Screws up their security and makes them a little less scary for your people, so maybe we do a statement-causing something like you said." He sat back against the couch and looked up at Tonks, aware belatedly that he'd been prattling on and not terribly sure if she would have followed that explanation. It was hard to tell in this place. "That's the basic plan, at least."

Tonks said nothing. As far as Theo was supposed to know, she knew nothing about the Ministry or strategy, but as long as he wasn't getting anyone killed in the process, she wouldn't protest too much. It just seemed a waste of resources, and the Order had enough bad press as it was; no need to give them more of an excuse to go after them.

"As long as you're sure they won't just - dunno, hire more security instead of spreading theirs out," she said with a shrug. "It'll have to be a place they care about enough to protect though, yeah? If we're just hitting minor and abandoned sites, I can't imagine they'd care too much."

Theo smiled slightly. "They'll hire new guards at first, but they can only keep that up for so long. They don't have the money for it, that I know for a fact. And this Ministry has it's foundation built on fear. To keep running, they have to be invioble. They'll do everything they can keep us from nipping at their heels, and in the process they'll have to uncover something more important."

He picked up his map and folded it up to put away. "Like I said though. It's just a thought. Long-term plan. Don't really expect it to go over well, but it keeps me busy."

Tonks considered this, then nodded once. She couldn't contribute much to the conversation without possibly narrowing down the field of expertise she was involved with, and being pregnant was enough of a giveaway. If someone other than Dumbledore found out who she was, well. It would be a disaster. And she really did hate Obliviating people.

"It's an interesting plan," she offered. "Could really go somewhere. What does the Order have you doing? Anything in particular?"

Theo shook his head slowly and put his books aside. He didn't expect people to warm to his idea right away - it was fairly different style from what they were used to, but then again what they were used to had gotten them nothing for two decades.

"They've got me doing potions. Afraid my last job doesn't have much of an application here, but I'm a fair hand at potions so I don't mind it."

"Potions is interesting," said Tonks, trying to gauge how he felt about it. She took him at his word and added, "It's one of the more interesting things to do, at least. Not - y'know, sitting around on your arse doing research all day. That has to be nice."

She looked at him curiously. "I thought you were in the camp before this. How long were you there? And what kind of job did you do before that?"

"I was an assistant to the Financial Adviser," he said, propping one foot up on the opposite knee and leaning back against the couch, trying to appear at ease with the conversation. "And I was in the camp for long enough to hate it and not long enough get used to it."

He pulled a book into his lap but didn't open it, just fiddled with the pages a bit, and hoped she'd get the hint that he didn't want to talk about that subject. "I actually prefer research. A nice bit of challenge."

"Oh." Sounded awfully boring, but she couldn't very well tell him that. Any sort of desk job was boring to her though, and she'd never had a knack for numbers. Truth be told, she was a bit envious of those who did. She nodded once, getting the hint well enough. Body language was easy to read.

Tonks gave him a smile. "That's good then. Reckon we ought to have some people who like that sort of thing in the house."

Picking up another pile, she sighed and offered him a stack of books. "Any of them catch your fancy?"

Theo smiled a little smugly at her reaction to his former job. It was fairly common response, and he'd learned to take it as a sort of back-handed compliment.

He picked up the pile and read over the titles, but didn't see anything that caught his eye right off. Some of them he'd already read, some of them he suspected were banned by the Ministry. "You trying to unload stuff?" he asked, nodding to the mess in the room but hanging onto the stack of books.

"Sort of," she said. "I don't need loads of this stuff anymore, and I figured it'd be better to offer it around rather than just get rid of it."

She glanced at him again. "Y'know, you've been here for months and I don't know anything about you. What was your life like before the Order and all?"

Theo hesitated for a moment and looked at the books in his lap when he finally answered. "I'm the only heir of a very prominent, wealthy family. I graduated top of my class and had a job job on a fast track to Ministerial Adviser. I had a fiance and my own room. That's about what my life was like before the Order."

Nonchalantly, as if the present conversation didn't bother him, he picked two books out of the stack in his lap and set them aide. "I'll take these off your hands."

"A fiancée?" said Tonks, interested. "Arranged, or were you two together out of choice?" She paused. "Have you considered contacting her? I mean, if she really loves you..."

She nodded. "Thanks. Help yourself, really. Everything in that pile there is up for grabs."

"Arranged, but we didn't mind the arrangement. If that makes sense."

Theo still wasn't sure if he wanted to let anyone know he was still seeing Ginny or not. He'd sneak out a couple of times a week to visit her flat, but each trip was harder to deal with, and he didn't want a bevvy of 'helpful advice' from Order members. That, and he didn't want to put Ginny at risk.

"...I don't even know if she'd want to see me. Papers say she's dating someone else now."

"It makes sense," she said. "Did you two love each other then? I understand how hard it can be, leaving the people you love behind for this sort of life. But I reckon some of them might be more understanding than we realise."

She raised her eyebrows. "The papers? What, did you manage to nab a celebrity then?"

Theo laughed shortly. At a certain level of society, especially a society as insular as wizarding England, everyone landed on Page 6 eventually. But often, only the people featured there actually cared.

"She wasn't when I met her, but now she's a Chaser for the Harpies. Ginny Rosier?"

Tonks had shunned that kind of flashy lifestyle from an early age, given her mother's background, and the only thing the rags got used for were lining her owl's cage.

"Oh. Ginny." The name set off something in her mind, and she vividly recalled seeing it on the file she'd given to Bill. She'd heard him mention the name a few times, and - "Ginevra? Molly and Arthur's daughter?" How cruel that must've been for them, knowing that two members of the Order they got to see on a daily basis were (or at least had been) so close with their estranged children.

Theo didn't answer the way he wanted to. 'No, Evan Rosier's daughter.'

"I don't think they know any more than that I went to school with her," he said with a shrug. "Haven't...didn't really seem appropriate to bring it up. And besides, she's moved on."

"But they haven't," said Tonks quietly. "I'm sorry, I don't mean to tell you what to do, but - I don't know. Maybe if they knew, they'd have a chance at getting back in touch with her. I know if it were my kid, I'd want to have every bit of information I could."

She shrugged and tossed an old jumper of Mackenzie's into the giveaway pile. "Just a thought."
