Characters: Bill Weasley, Ginny Weasley
Date: September 7th, 1999
Location: Harpies Stadium
Rating: Low
Summary: Bill tracks down one of his siblings, and kicks himself for missing the obvious
Status: Incomplete

Since Bill had been laid up at his house for most of the past week, he'd had time to catch up on some reading he normally didn't bother with - once he'd run out of news and work related stuff, Charlie had found a stash of magazines for him that he mostly wasn't interested in, but flipped through out of boredom anyway. He wasn't really interested in the newest work out fads or craptastic sports gear, and even less interested in the personal lives of the celebrities that hawked it. Still, it passed the time.

And when he found an article about the Holyhead Harpies' newest leading lady it all suddenly became a lot more interesting. Bill had never been one to follow the sport too much - he kept up with the standings so as not to embarrass himself around his friends and would go see the National team compete each year, but beyond that he didn't give a rat's ass who played for which team. Now he was kicking himself for not paying more attention.

Ginevra Rosier bore a very strong resemblance to her biological mother. And to Charlie, which was what Bill noticed second. What he noticed first was the name, which was unusual enough catch his attention any time he heard it.

For most of the rest of that day he'd spent his time looking through anything he could find for references to Ginevra Rosier, and when that produced nothing but gossip he broke doctor's orders and headed in to the office to use the resources he had there. His research wasn't part of any sanctioned mission, but few people bothered him, and the ones that did backed off when they learned what it was about. Bill didn't have any issues giving up his sob story (always told in a stern tone, mind you) if it got him closer to what he wanted.

Ginevra Rosier had been adopted by the Rosier family when she was an infant. Previous records were sealed, even to Bill, but the age matched up right. She'd attended Hogwarts, made fairly average grades, played on her House team with great success. Had been engaged to Theodore Nott who was picked up for being a blood traitor and was now dating some other guy Bill didn't care about. Someone else who probably wasn't good enough for her.

She'd been a Gryffindor. Bill didn't have any doubts that this was his sister and the knowledge that she'd been in the same house as Charlie filled him with pride. He sat as his desk in the office for hours staring at a photo of her Gryffindor House team that he'd managed to track down before finally heading home again.

That had been several days ago. Turns out getting in contact with a semi-famous Quidditch player is rather hard. He'd tried the obvious - contacting her agent and explaining the situation to him. The man had laughed him out of of the office. He'd tried use his DE contacts to get in touch with Evan Rosier and explain things to him instead, but the man was traveling and couldn't be contacted until next week. Bill didn't want to wait that long, so the only option left was to find some way to get in contact with Ginny herself.

Which was how he found himself sitting in the stands for one of the Harpies' open practices. He wasn't the only fan there, although the crowd was pretty sparse. Not many people were as interested in practices, especially the staged ones that were open to the public, as they were in actual games. Bill's hair was still shorter than he wanted it, but long enough now that it looked like he'd just forgotten to get a haircut several months in a row and added to the still-raw scar it gave him quite a disheveled appearance. He sat by himself and watched Ginny intently throughout the practice, noting with pride that she was every bit as good as the 'zines claimed she was.

When practice was over some of the Harpies headed for the stands, apparently to greet and talk to the fans there. The fans clearly expected this and clamored for the players' attention. Bill stood up a little belatedly and headed for Ginny, hoping he wouldn't have to make a scene in front of this crowd to get her attention.

Ginny, unlike some of the other players on the team, liked the exhibition practices. She liked getting to talk to people, especially children, without a ton of press around. The conversations were always more easy going and natural, and this practice was no different.

Until she noted the ginger-haired fellow who was just... staring. At her.

Wow. He was creepy. And he needed a decent hair cut.

Still, it was bad PR for her to neglect anyone who was waiting to see her, so she forced a smile onto her face and nodded to him. "Did you have fun watching the practice?"

"I did," he said pleasantly, although he rather ruined the intended effect by studying her face. She looked just like her pictures, of course, but seeing someone in person was always so much more...compete than just looking at a photograph. She seemed happy. Healthy. Comfortable.

A smaller boy got in between them and presented Ginny with a photograph for her to sign, but Bill just kept talking over his head. "I'm Bill Weasley." He didn't know if she had any clue she was adopted or if she knew her real name, but he hoped that if she did giving his name would be easier than just coming out with I'm your long-lost brother.

Ginny smiled warmly when the young boy (she guessed he was about eight) came up for an autograph. She ignored the creepy creepster while signing and taking a photograph with the young fan, hoping he wasn't so stalkery that he'd take her actions as a snub. The children always came first with her.

When the kid walked away, she turned her smile back to Bill. "Nice to meet you, Bill. I'm Ginny Rosier." She leaned over the barricade to extend her hand to him.

Ginny knew she was adopted, but she hadn't ever bothered to question her parents about her origins beyond that. She knew she was a pureblood and that her birth parents hadn't been fit to keep her, so her Mum and Dad adopted her when she was a little baby. Maybe they hadn't been there for the first few months of her life, but they'd been there for everything after, and that was far more important to Ginny than anything else.

It was clear she wasn't affected by the name, and when Bill shook her hand he held onto it a little longer than he rightly should have. He hadn't had much of a plan when he'd arrived at the stadium, and he still didn't. In fact, almost all he could think about was that she'd grown into such a beautiful young woman, so different from the tiny little baby he remembered.

"I'm..." He hesitated, and then decided to just come out with it. There really was nothing he could say to get her alone, so he could break the news in private, without her assuming he was just a stalker-ish fan. Not that the truth would sound any less crazy, if she didn't know she was adopted. "I'm your brother."

Well, that she wasn't expecting. Ginny blinked, staring at the man that wouldn't let go of her hand for a few seconds, absorbing what he'd said. He could be a kook. Or he could actually be related to her.

"... I'm an only child, Mr. Weasley," she said politely, pulling her hand from his grasp. She figured that was the easiest way to figure out if he was some crazy fan or actually one of the boys from the family she'd been born into.

"When you were born you had six brothers, though." He let go of her hand when she pulled away, not trying to restrain her. "I've been trying to find you for the past ten years, but it...wasn't easy." Another fan came over, feeling perhaps that Bill had been hogging her attention for too long. Bill gave her a plaintive look, not sure if they should continue this conversation in a crowd.

Ginny's face blanched when Bill spoke, and she wanted nothing more than to pull him aside to find out what, exactly, he wanted from her. But then another fan camp up and she was forced to put her smile back on.

Excusing herself from the fan who was waiting, she grabbed Bill's arm and dragged him a few feet away so they could speak privately. "...You can find your way to the locker rooms, aye?"

Bill smiled in relief, which made his face look less creepy. She apparently was willing to believe him, and that was all Bill wanted. "Yeah, I can get there."

He stepped back and allowed the other fans to command Ginny's attention. After a few moments he turned and headed toward the exit.

The locker rooms weren't hard to find, though Bill had to abuse his auror credentials to get past the guards. He didn't even bother to fabricate an lie for an excuse, just flashed his badge and insisted upon being let in. The guards didn't know any better and let him pass.

Once there he waited outside the Harpies locker room, waiting for Ginny to return. The other players gave him strange looks as they passed, but didn't bother him.

Ginny greeted a few more guests, took a few more pictures, signed a few more autographs and then made her way to the team locker room. She showered and fixed her hair and make up, thinking all the while of the man who'd introduced himself as her brother. What was his angle? What did he want from her? Was it money? She wasn't rolling in it, and anyways, he didn't look poor. His shoes were very high quality. Anyone who was poor couldn't afford good shoes.

She wished Theo were there. She didn't know what to do and she knew he'd have an opinion.

Eventually, she exited the locker room, glancing around the hallway. Bill wasn't hard to find. "So. We need to talk."

Bill was patient with his waiting, but he turned and nodded when Ginny came back to him. "Yes we do. Did you have a place in mind?"

He had been leaning casually against a wall while waiting and when they started talking stepped aside to gesture for her to precede him out of the stadium.

"I know a couple of tea shops nearby," Ginny offered, her shoulders straight and her head held high as she lead the way out. "But they'll probably be crowded right now. With the practice and all."

Bill followed her, smiling slightly and her attitude. It seemed fitting for her, considering the family she'd been raised in and her current status, but it was one Bill was used to deal with enough that it didn't bother him.

She was right about the shops nearby being crowded, and they had to walk a few extra blocks to find a place that could give them a private table. It was not the kind of establishment Bill would have wound up at voluntarily - a higher-end coffee shop that seemed like it had been decorated with middle-aged housewives in mind. Everything done in light colors and delicate patterns that made Bill feel like a bull in a china shop, considering his size and casual appearance.

Bill didn't try to start the conversation again until they'd been seated in a corner table, him sitting with his back to the wall out of habit. "I'm sorry I had to come at you out of the blue like that. I couldn't think of another way to get in contact with you."

"Well, I suppose there isn't a good way to approach a person about something like that," Ginny conceded, idly opening her menu. "And, in the end, it just depends on what you want from me."

Ginny had no doubt that he wanted something. People always did, no matter how noble-seeming their intentions were. She glanced up, angling her head slightly. "You don't mind if I eat, do you? I'm always famished after practice."

"No, of course not." He waved over a waitress so Ginny could order but only had a a coffee for himself.

After the waitress left, he folded his hands on the table before him and addressed Ginny again. "I don't want anything from you, Ginny. Not tangible, at least. I've been trying to find you and our other siblings for the past ten years - ever since I got out of school. I just wanted to meet you, that's all. To find you."

"Everyone wants something," Ginny said, unfolding her napkin and laying it on her lap. "It's all a matter of angles."

She shrugged it off, staying silent while the waitress was there, filling up their cups. Ginny had ordered tea to go with her salad and soup. "So, how many of 'us' have you found?"

A good bit of Bill's enthusiasm about this meeting cooled when Ginny insisted that he must want something from her. It was a more cynical view than he would have expected in someone her age - that and he was really sick of having people in his life tell him what he wanted or was going to do.

"One. Two, including you. I was the oldest and then there was Charlie after me, but we went to school together so it wasn't very hard to find him, really. That's it, though."

Just two. Three of them, all together. "And there are no signs of the others?"

Ginny was... confused. She didn't know what this man wanted from her, or how she should be feeling or reacting to any of this. She didn't know him, or this Charlie person. She didn't remember her birth family. The only parents she'd ever known were the ones that raised her. "Tell me about yourself. What do you do? Where do you work? Are you married?"

Bill leaned back in his chair and looked her over again, and when he spoke his tone was cool enough to match hers. "I work at the Ministry of Magic, as an auror. I'm not married, but I have a four year old little girl. I haven't heard anything about our other siblings, except that they were adopted out and those records are sealed." Only he had been left to fend for himself on in the foster system.

"You don't actually care at all, do you?"

Ginny perked a brow in Bill's direction, watching him carefully. "Honestly, I don't know what I feel about this right now. I don't know if I care, or if I even should. You've come at me, completely out of the blue here, Bill. Yes, I've always known I was adopted, but... My parents love me. All I know is that the people we were born to weren't fit to care for us, so we were taken away, and I was just a baby when it happened. I don't remember a single thing about any of it."

A daughter. Bill had a daughter. That meant, technically, that she was an aunt. Ginny had always wondered, though she'd never admit it, what it would have been like to grow up in a large family. Would she still be the person she was today? Would she ever have met Theo? What kind of life might she have lead if things had been even the tiniest bit different?

Bill focused in on the fact that she'd said her parents loved her. It was always the one thing he was most concerned about when it came to his siblings - they'd been adopted, but into what kind of homes? Had then been better treated than him? Hearing Ginny say that her adopted parents loved her was incredibly relieving, even though he knew he couldn't be sure that it was true yet.

"I know you were just a baby. I still remember when Mum and Dad brought you home. I'm sorry to spring this on you so suddenly, Ginny, but...I guess I just had to find you again and make sure you're alright. I'm really not asking anything from you. I'm not saying you should turn your back on your family or anything like that. I just wanted to meet you."

Ginny watched Bill as he spoke, looking for any little sign that he was anything but sincere. She didn't find any, but she was far too wary to immediately relax around him. He was an Auror. He'd have learned how to lie convincingly.

Still, he was her family. She could easily see features in him that she saw in the mirror every day. And, besides... She could have her father look into him. Her father was a Death Eater. He could find out anything.

"How about... we make luncheons like this a regular thing? Say, one weekday lunch a week so we can get to know one another."

Bill smiled slightly and tipped his head to the side as he watched her. "You suddenly find out you've got a long-lost brother, or six, and you treat it like some sort of business arrangement?" he asked, more curious than offended. "I was serious when I said I didn't come here to ask you for anything. If I'm making you uncomfortable I don't want you to feel pressured into anything."

And if he didn't make her uncomfortable, he didn't think he'd be satisfied with formally arranged 'luncheons.' He'd already found out that such stiffness didn't really lead to familial feelings.

Ginny snorted into her tea, waiting for the waitress to set her food down before she spoke again. "Oh, there are lots of things I treat as business arrangements."

She picked up her spoon and dipped it into her soup, stirring it so it could cool. "And I figure this... I'm not out anything by having a few meals with you and getting to know you. In fact, it actually works very well in my favor." She chuckled then, lifting up a spoonful and blowing on it. "I've already seen you around at social engagements, you know. Like the parties the Malfoys throw."

"I'm surprised you'd remember me," he said conversationally. "I have a few social connections that warrant invitations to such things, and I like to attend when I can. I'm afraid I've never seen you at one of those things, though." Of course, his attention at parties like that was usually limited to people who could help him with his various goals, not with the younger crowd.

"I noticed you used the past tense in here. Consider yourself more than a kid now?" He was glad to see her humorous, even if it was just a chuckle that could have been prompted by anything. He almost wished he'd ordered something to eat, since he had nothing to do besides twiddle his thumbs while she ate her soup.

Bill wanted to say that she did - she was incredibly young, after all, in addition to being his kid sister. He thought of anyone younger than him as a 'kid' and still thought of a tiny baby in his mother's arms when he looked at her.

But, that probably wouldn't go over too well considering they had just met. He didn't know how much he could get away with teasing her.

"You look like a very beautiful young woman," he assured her, matching her wry grin. "And very successful, too. You played in school?"
