I don't believe that people should take their own lives without deep and thoughtful reflection over a considerable period of time.
Cold.
Of course it was cold, there was snow on the ground!
He lay in the middle of it perfectly straight and perfectly still and perfectly naked. Eyes closed, arms slightly away from his body, palms up and fingers curled just so in as a faint powder lazily fell over him as if it were too tired to snow properly.
The city was as quiet as a city could be. The noises were at least distant because it was Sunday night and no one had walked through the small, square park with its holiday lights in quite some time. They left colored splotches on his deathly white skin, the lights. Orange, red, blue, pink, green. He'd thought they'd been pretty at first but his desire to play dead overshadowed their distraction, especially after he touched them and found they weren't warm and after he'd pulled one out and the whole string had remained lit.
He imagined all the other bodies that must be out there in the world laying just as he was in that very moment. All living things were connected to one another, a thread that wove inscrutably through the fabric of everything. In death there was a similar comraderie, he was sure of it. If he opened his eyes just then he could be looking out through the eyes of any one of them in any part of the world from a nursing home to a war zone to the inside of a morgue shelf to the Body Farm in Tennessee.
So this was what it was like to be dead. No breath, no heart, no movement, just cold and gloom and silence.
He liked it.
