Victor hadn't celebrated the holiday in a few years. Never really had a reason to. Not since leaving the ship.

He wanted to do it right this year.

His house was decorated inside and out and he was offering to cook for his new friends Miki and Susan. Even got presents for them under his tree.

However, cooking part wasn't coming out as well as he had hoped.

"Fuck," Victor screamed as he opened the oven. The turkey was on fire. Which needless to say was not a good thing.

He grabbed the fire extinguisher and put it out. Opening a window and side door to let out the smoke.

Miki had been reading a letter that she'd found in her mailbox as she walked next door to Vic's. She was vaguely aware of the smoke coming from the kitchen and she was glad she carried a large bag with still warm food in it. No one could ever say the investigator wasn't prepared. At the moment anyway.

She reached the side door, walked on inside without an invitation, and didn't look up from her reading. "You know, despite what people say, fire extinguishers do not add flavor to a turkey."

Vic coughs fanning the smoke.

"Really? And here I thought it gave it that a little something extra."

The smoke slowly starts to clear. He turns to Miki with a small smile.

"Merry Christmas," he says finishing it off with a cough. "Master Chef I am not. At least when it comes to turkeys."

She coughs and fanned some smoke away from her using her letter filled hand. "So I noticed. At least I'm adult enough to admit defeat in certain areas of the kitchen."

Miki held up her large bag and offered it to him with a smirk. "And that's why I came prepared. It's not a whole turkey, but it's the good parts professionally cooked and there's a pumpkin spice pie in there too. Bought the turkey, made the pie. All thanks to that wonderful cafe of drunken fun. They make fast to go orders did you know that?"

"I did not," he replied with a grin.

He takes the bag and places it on the counter.

"I'll, uh, be right back."

He takes the burnt turkey outside to de-smoke. Coming back, he places the turkey on a platter.

"So, how did you celebrate the holidays growing up," Victor asked as he finished up the mashed potatoes.

She folded up her letter and slid it into her coat pocket. before answering. "My holidays?" Miki shrugged and removed her coat and put it away. "Just family things with the parents and a few friends. Christmas was the only time I saw my parents for more than a couple of days during the school year."

She wandered over to see what he was doing. "Up until this year I usually spend it with the same people. Change of plans this year on my end. Are you making those from scratch or are they instant?"

"Scratch. My mom taught me how, so this I wont burn or ruin in anyway."

Victor tosses in some seasoning.

"My family holidays would probably fit in perfectly here. Big family gathering. Big tree, christmahs carols and cocoa. We were lame, but wouldn't have traded it for anything."

He looks down a little wistfully, missing his parents. Wishing they were still alive to be here with him.

"Right, because you never burn anything from scratch." Miki rolled her eyes her smirk still in place. "Someone doesn't seem to understand it doesn't work that way."

She listened to him talk and she felt sympathy for him but was unsure what to say. She was never good with that sort of thing. So Miki opted to try and move the conversation along. "And now here you are, trying to give your neighbors food poisoning. Nice job there." She was teasing and ran a hand through her hair. "Speaking of neighbors, what time is Susan coming? I know I'm early but the smoke demanded me to beat that clock."

"Potatoes are easy...Turkey's are hard."

Vic turns to her and rolls his eyes with a smile. Miki, always busting his chops.

"Not trying to. Just going to be dum luck on my part. And I dont think you can get food poisoning if somethings burnt."

He fixes his now tosseled hair. He takes out his pocket watch and looks at the time. "She should be here pretty soon."

Susan rushes in carrying a huge bottle of champagne.

"Am I late? I wasn't sure what to bring so I wasted time trying to figure it out."

Raising the bottle as if they couldn't see it, she sat it on the table.
"Um, so I thought this might be okay?"

"That's perfect."

He puts an arm around her and gives her a peck on the cheek.

"Merry Christmas Susan. And no, you're not late. Right on time. Dinner should be ready soon."

He turns back to the dinner preparations.

Miki grinned at Susan. "Merry Christmas, Susan. You missed Vic's attempt to cook. He was going to kill us as a start of a new tradition."

She eyed the bottle though. "Is that some good stuff? Are we in for a merry drunken holiday too?" If they were, Miki could get down with that.

"It is suppose to be the best. I asked Reiko, I don't think you have met Reiko yet, she is one of Bardy's...Um, girlfriends and she really knows her booze. Anyway, she says this is the best quality champagne you can get."

I look over at Victor. "Do you happen to know how to open this thing? We can have a couple of glasses before dinner."

Victor nods and drys his hands with a towel. He takes the bottle, peels off the paper.

He adjusts the angle of the bottle and pops off the corkscrew. It bounces off the corner of the roof, off the toaster, off the microwave and flies up into the air where Vic catches it.

He turns to the ladies holding the corkscrew. "The uh, glasses are in the cabinet behind you."

Miki gave him a suspicious look and mentally shrugged. Okaaaaay. She retrieved the glasses and brought them over. "Goody. We get food and wasted. This could be fun yet."

Not that she didn't think it was going to be fun before, but then again she had pretty mich thought that some kind of nexus disaster would occur. So far so good, right? "So what's this stuff taste like anyway? I'm not exactly an expert in this kind of thing." No sir. She was just a she sees it she'll drink it kind of girl. Sometimes.

"Had it a few times in the past. Don't really know how to explain how it tastes. Its kind of like apple juice diluted with lots of alcohol I guess would be a good discription."

He pours the champange into the glasses and hands them to the women.

"This where we raise a toast or something?"

"I have one!" Miki had a good one. A good toast in her mind at any rate. She lifted her glass. "To finding whatever it is that we're looking for here in sweet Serenity Hills." At least here was to hoping she found what she wanted. She was starting to think she'd never get her job done and that she was a lousy investigator. Maybe she was. Or maybe she just wasn't looking in the right spots. That was going to change as soon as Christmas was over. Back on that horse and into the fray. Or something like that.

"Over the past couple years, I've been a bit lost. Leaving an old life behind, trying to move forward. Just want to say that, no matter what happens in the future, I'm glad I have you two in my life to share it with. Don't feel so alone anymore," Vic said raising his glass a little.

Once their little toasts were finished, Miki took a sip of her drink. Ooh. Bubbles. "Did you guys notice some of the houses have sold signs on them now?" That of course meant one thing. "We may be getting new neighbors." Miki was hoping they were sane ones... ones she could possibly warn against the possible (and likely) evils of Serenity Hills.

"Wonder why they left in the first place. If this place is as perfect as it seems, most people would kill to stick around."

Vic's mind drifted to a dark place wondering if something happened to those people or was these joking conspiracy theories getting to his head.

"They were still empty." Miki pointed out. She knew this because she'd already looked into it even though she'd been paying attention since moving in. "They were some of the houses on sale during the open house we all went to. Guess that didn't have any buyers till now. Wonder who they'll be."

"Yeah, cause it has been sooo boring here up till now?"

Takes a gulp of her drink and giggles a bit as the bubbles tickle her nose.

"I'll just be happy if they don't turn out to be perverts like that sick little bas.. um, my brother Imp 13."

"You know, you can say the word if you want. If your brother's a sick little bastard sing it from the rooftops. From the stories you've told us...he kinda is."

Vic glanced and saw his mashed potatoes were done.

"Foods ready. We all ready to eat?"

Miki made a face at the mention of Susan's brother. She was pretty glad she hadn't really run into him that she could remember. Thank god for that...

Ooh. Food. Always a good thing. "I'm ready when you guys are." Heck yeah, for some reason she felt like she hadn't eaten in a month!

Sees Miki and Victor looking at her.

"It wasn't me. Really it wasn't!"

Looks sideways at Miki.

"Well anyway, let's eat! I too am starving."

Miki wasn't picky, after all she was the one who brought the turkey that wouldn't kill them. "Anything goes for me."

Though it was nice that she was here with new friends, Miki couldn't help but feel a little homesick. Sure, her parents didn't cook their holiday meals (they were catered) but it was still her family. This was one of the few holidays she willingly missed with them. "Say, I hope no one is allergic to apples." Miki suddenly said. "I just remembered that they used them on the turkey."

"I'm a breast girl myself." Susan says in response to Vic's question.

"I am blessed in that I have no allergies at all being an imp." Susan says to Miki but then frowns as she realizes that might not have been the best way to word her reply.

"No kidding," Vic said with a small smirk. He couldn't help but make the joke. She set him up for it.

Vic gives Miki her peice and a breast for susan. Vic whent with a leg. He always got the leg growing up.

After all their plates were filled with food Vic sat down.

"Dinner is served."

A month ago Miki might have rolled her eyes and spoke up about his comment, be it from annoyance or jealousy. Now, she just ignored it. She started on her food and after a moment she spoke up. "So I was getting coffee the other day at the commons," that was a little town square area in their community, "And they had these sign ups for some kind of spring fair. Have you guys noticed them?"

I shake my head between bites.

"No, I haven't seen them yet. This community is really big on celebrations isn't it?"

"I'll probably check it out...unless it has clowns. Then I fully suggest hiding until it ends. I don't like clowns...clowns are evil."

Vic took a bite of Miki's turkey. Was most delicious.

"Don't think they'll do much for Groundhog Day. Puxatawny has the patent on the rodent celebration."

"It wasn't very clear on what it had." Miki said with a frown. That bothered her. "In fact, it was pretty vague, but there were lots of names signed up."

She waved her empty fork around as she spoke. "For all we know it could be some kind of ritual sacrifice. Or maybe a fertilization ritual thing." Or maybe it could just be a silly carnival with rides and games. Miki always had to jump to the far side of things.

"Well if we see any rides called Flaming Wickerman we'll know to avoid them."

"And if they have 'children of the corn' competition I am so out of there!"

I giggle at my own jokes a bit. The champagne getting a bit to me.

"And you can bet if it is a fertilization ritual thing, 13 will be right in the middle of it."

Blushes bright red for a moment at the mental images her own words cause her before coughing and taking another drink of champagne.
