Who: Eve and Luke
What: An ice cream excursion
When: Friday, May 23, Late afternoon
Where: Kitchens
Rating: PG
Status: Incomplete

Evie drummed her fingers against her side, craning her neck around the corridor to look for Luke's tall frame. She was slightly nervous, as she was certain the time he'd said to meet him had come and passed. Well, it's not unlike Luke to be a few minutes late, she reasoned to herself, deciding to contemplate what flavor of ice cream she wanted this trip. She tried not to think that it might be the last ice cream trip she'd have with Luke - or at Hogwarts. She was certain that she wouldn't have the gall to make one of these clandestine trips alone next year - and all of a sudden she felt a twinge of sadness at the impending departure of the 7th years. The feeling didn't fit quite right, especially since she had very few friends who were leaving. But both Luke and Jude had been exceptions to that rule, and to her general nervousness around boys, it seemed ever since she had arrived. Without warning, she felt very acutely what she would be missing next year without them.

Attempting to push that thought out of her mind, she shoved her hand into her pocket and pulled out the worn Muggle letter that was folded there. Eyes scanning the words for the thousandth time, the nervous sensation in her stomach still made her heart beat faster - and she wasn't sure if that was a good or bad thing. Hearing the approaching footsteps, she quickly pushed the letter back into her pocket. She meant to ask Luke his opinion, but was all of a sudden shy. Turning toward Luke, she smiled brightly and called a soft, "Hi."

With a whistle on his lips and a spring in his step, Luke bounded down the halls, intent on making his ice cream run with the best Hufflepuff he knew. He wasn't exactly sure how he had gotten to know the younger girl, probably guessing it was during one of his adventures -so numerous that he lost count and couldn't remember every single circumstance unless he was prompted with a bit of detail which would make everything come back in vivid colour- in his second year and possibly something dealing with her violin, but he was glad that they had and that they became friends. He liked trying to pull her out of her shell, and would be sorry that he couldn't see her fully blossom next year and make men eat their hearts out.

"Hey, Evie!" he called out with a big grin, reaching out to tickle the pear in the painting and then opening the door for her as it swung out. "What'll it be? Banana split?" He waggled his eyebrows. "Parfait? Or... sundae?"

Evie ducked behind the door, smiling gratefully at Luke for holding it open. She tapped her index finger on her chin in a mock thoughtful pose, pretending to contemplate his question like he'd just asked her about a complicated Arithmancy problem. "Well, I do prefer the fruit in the banana split...but I might be more in the mood for a sundae this afternoon," she grinned playfully at him. "And you, Mr. Spencer? What're you in the mood for?" She let him pass in front of her to lead the way, marveling a little at her own ease, wondering why it wasn't this easy to talk to all boys. But this isn't just any boy, she thought to herself, It's Luke. He's different. But exactly why he was different, she wasn't sure. He'd always been different, though, and she wasn't complaining. She just wondered why it was that she could hang out with him, could talk to him without feeling like there was a large knot in her throat.

Evie thought back to the letter in her back pocket. She wanted to get his opinion on it, because she trusted him, especially with Muggle things. But she didn't really know how to bring it up. She tucked her hair behind her ears and watched his back for a little as they walked through the narrow corridors. "So, um," she began, a little more hesitantly than she usually was with Luke, "What are you up to this summer?" She felt her cheeks burning with a blush, unsure of why it was coming on but still glad that he was looking straight ahead instead of at her.

Luke grinned at Evie, and then tilted his head in thought. "If you're going with a sundae, then it's my duty to have a banana split. It's only right, you know, to balance the universe and all," he winked. He had always liked spending time with Evie, even though she was much different than his own sister, Katie. Katie was more gutsy, and of course, she had their brother, Derek, to help protect her from blokes who were too stubborn for their own good. Evie, on the other hand, seemed to need him more and he didn't mind. It made him feel that he had some purpose.

"I think I'm going to be going to Quidditch Boot camp," Luke grinned at her. "Something they put all the rookies through, I think, though I might get to go backpacking with Derek for a month or two beforehand." He looked at her curiously. "What about you?"

"Yes, and the universe must be balanced!" Evie grinned widely at Luke as she returned the joke as best she could. Evie knew very little about Luke's family, but if she'd known that Luke considered her along with his sister, she would be flattered. Ever since they'd become friends (she couldn't remember how it had happened, either), she'd looked up to Luke as though he was an older brother, allowing herself to be dragged into mischief that she'd never otherwise dream of. Perhaps that was why his opinion on this summer opportunity was so important to her.

Evie knew that if it was left up to her, she would never join this youth orchestra - would never have taken the initiative to audition in the first place. In a sense, she knew in the back of her mind that she was trying to get Luke to convince her to do it. But she would never admit that to herself. She listened as he related his plans for after graduation with a twinge of sadness. "That sounds fabulous for you," she attempted to hide her own disdain for the sport in favor of his enthusiasm. "Dad did the same thing when he graduated from Hogwarts, and tells Jack and I stories all the time from boot camp. Jack's a bit more interested than I am," she confided, smiling sheepishly, though she knew her lack of knowledge about Quidditch would come as no surprise to Luke.

At his question, she hesitated. Since her perfect opportunity had cropped up so perfectly, she couldn't waste it - and yet she was shy all of a sudden, worrying that he might take her news as some backhanded form of bragging about herself. "I, erm..." she began, the words catching in her throat. "I'm not sure," she finally said, and it was as honest as she could be. Fidgeting with the ends of her hair, she continued, annoyed with her awkwardness and deciding just to go for it. "Actually, I got this letter a week or so ago. Mum apparently sent a recording of my playing to this Muggle youth orchestra and they, erm, well, they want me to come join them for the summer." I'll leave out the bit about wanting me to be first-chair violin, she thought to herself. "I don't know, though. I mean, I won't know anyone, and it's for six weeks, and I won't get to see any of you all. Plus, it will be strange to not use magic for that long..." Evie dared a glance at Luke's face, painfully curious for his reaction.

"Exactly!" Luke grinned widely, and then rubbed his chin in thought. "Why if we didn't balance each other, it might... implode or something! And we wouldn't want that to happen." He winked.

Of course, if he had known his opinion was so important to her, he would have been flattered and surprised. He knew most people just saw him as a fun guy to be around, and even though he could be quite easy-going -except in cases where a certain Slytherin was concerned- he knew that most people also didn't give him a second thought that he could have important opinions or would be up for a debate, to play opposite to whoever. But knowing that his words actually held some leverage? That would have been eye-opening to say the least.

He nodded at her, smiling encouragingly. "Well, I doubt I could be as great a Quidditch player as he was," he grinned. "But I'll try my best." Of course, Luke also would try his best to get into the Auror program later but since Quidditch was a natural talent and not dependent on grades, he thought he'd give it a shot before applying.

When she told him about joining a summer youth orchestra, Luke brightened noticeably. "That's bloody wonderful!" he exclaimed, pulling her hands into his and starting to swing her around, twirling her under his arm. "And being in boot camp, you can't really see me anyways! But you can send me recordings or pictures." He seemed to be excited enough for both of them, but he couldn't help that. He was Luke Spencer after all.
