Data: Presents
Data understands giving and receiving presents. Many, many cultures observe a similar practice. "That is a very nice thought. If it is not any trouble, I would like to request an ambient metaphasic impulse conduit. That, or a quantum duodynetic plasma scanner. Either one would be welcome." He pauses. "I realize that these may be difficult for you to come by here, so perhaps I should just ask for a cat. I miss Spot."

"Thank you." Data lifts the apparatus out of the box. "And my name is Data." He examines the thing carefully, turning it over in his hands. "I'm sorry," he says, setting it down on a nearby table. "I do not recognize this device."

"I do not know Andy," Data says, taking the paper from the box. "But that is a proper name as Data is mine."

"Can you tell me where you got this?" He lays his hand on the piece of machinery the luggage gave him.

Data is taken aback by the boxes reaction. "Very well. I will not perform any tests. I will continue to observe you however."

The luggage has no idea what 'Starfleet' might be, but it sounds good enough for him. Besides, he can always get rid of Data if he has to. He edges out from under the table.

"I do apologize." Data gets to his feet and rights the chair the luggage has knocked over. "The wood of which you are constructed does not match anything in my memory-banks." Data tilts his head. "How is it that you are ticklish? You have no nerve endings that would respond to stimuli. And how are you able to see where you are? What types of sense organs do you possess?"

Data stares at the wall the luggage has just vanished through. He slowly walks over and runs his hand along it. It seems solid. He raps sharply on it and tilts his head to listen. "Most intriguing," he comments softly. "I have never seen anything like it in my life."

Merlin's gaze is glued to the conversation between the walking sea chest and the pale looking man. He didn't understand half of what the man said.

For a brief moment, he entertains the thought of spelling himself into a cat. Probably not a smart move.

"Excuse me, what exactly is a ambient metaphasic impulse, uh, duoplasma? Scanner?" He clears his throat. "Is it anything to do with the magic of electricity?

"Ambient metaphasic impulse conduit," Data gently corrects him. "It is a conduit, a channel, through which impulse power can be directed at a very precise rate. I had thought to use it to augment the subspace communications relay in my shuttle. The quantum duodynetic plasma scanner is used to detect anomalies in the coronas of stars. Neither utilizes electricity. Do you know where I might locate either one?" He cocks his head. "I do not believe we have met." He extends a hand. "My name is Data."

Merlin shakes himself...he is being rude, staring like that. He takes the proffered hand, frowns though as he looks into Data's eyes. They are golden yellow, much as his own were...

When he cast a spell.

The hand is cold, but Merlin tries to not show his surprise. "Thank you for the explanation." He scratches his head. "I'm sorry though, I don't know anything about what you are seeking." Even if he knew, he could not conjur it for his new acquaintance.

"I might be able to help you with the cat though. I'm Merlin. I just arrived here. Today." He smiles a bit shyly. "Have you been here long?"

Data tilts his head. He's used to being stared at. "You are welcome," he says. "I am always happy to impart information. But I believe my wants are beyond the technological capabilities of this time."

"It is a pleasure to meet you Merlin." Data makes no comment about the name. "That would be very kind of you. Do you have a cat?" He doesn't hesitate. "I have been here 12 days, 1 hour and 52 minutes." He doesn't mention the seconds. "Where did you come from?"

Gaius would have my head for being so daft. "Sorry. I just have not met..." He grimaces. "Have you met the Doctor? He might be able to help. He travels around a great deal."

He blinks at the rush of words though the words are by no means rushed at all. "No, I don't have a cat, sorry. Except for the barn cats I suppose, the mousers. I'm from Camelot, actually. The Doctor says it is many years in the future, but won't tell me anything else."

He frowns, puzzled. "How did you get here though? I just...appeared here." Like magic.

"I have seen Doctor McCoy," Data tells him. "I had met him previously. But I have not met anyone called 'the Doctor'. May I trouble you for an introduction?"

"Camelot? I do not know of any planet or settlement called Camelot. But if you are from the future that is not surprising. Would you tell me about it? Is it in the Gamma Quadrant?"

"I was en route to my ship when I encountered a wormhole. Unable to avoid being pulled in, I was transported to this place and time." Data blinks. "Magic?" he asks.

Hello! I don't think we've had the chance to meet yet, I'm the Doctor. *he continues on swiftly*
I couldn't help noticing -- those were some pretty high-tech gifts you were asking for. Well, other than the cat... *grins* Anyway, I wondered where -- or when -- you were from?

Nice to meet you Data!
*nods, quiet*
Ahhh. 2368. Well, that explains it. You're from a more advanced time then when we are now...
*brow furrows a bit*
Though I'm afraid I'm not entirely familiar with that technology... Which is odd -- I tend to be good with tech... stuff...
Anyway! Could you tell me what they do?

"And you as well," Data tells him. "That would appear to be the case," he agrees.

"Certainly. An ambient metaphasic impulse conduit is a conduit through which impulse power can be directed at a very precise rate. The quantum duodynetic plasma scanner is used to detect anomalies in the coronas of stars." He blinks. "You are familiar with such devices Doctor? If so, I would very much like to make use of them if you have them available."

Indeed it would.

*listens intently, nodding, brow still slightly furrowed*
Hmm...
*pauses a moment lost in thought*
Interesting...
*swiftly*
I don't believe I have those exact devices available... But, well, would you be able to build them if you had the proper parts to do so?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]nfn_nmi_data

Data frowns slightly. "I could, yes. But since the parts to construct them are no more available in this time than the devices themselves, it is a moot point Doctor."

Well, it just so happens, that I'm not from this time either. And, it also just so happens, I've got a space-ship-time-machine with lots of spare parts. Lots of spare parts... *shrugs, smiles* So I might be able to help you out. If you're interested.

*shrugs, vaguely*
Sort of all over... I suppose I am from a long-ago time, but I've traveled to the far-distant future as well. *grins* And around and around. It's good fun.

*delighted*
Brilliant! You'll have to stop by after the meeting then! It's parked by Hol... *smile fades* Well... My house, now. It's parked by my house. *shakes his head* Long story.

*takes a deep breath, brightening again*
I could just show you the way if you'd like?

"Of course," Data says gravely. He may not be human, but he recognizes a dodge when he hears one. He can wait. He's very good at waiting.

"You have your ship parked by a house? It must be quite small then. A shuttle perhaps? My shuttle is in the sea."

"That would be acceptable Doctor. If I am not interrupting any other plans you might have had." Geordi would be proud of him for remembering to say that.
