Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
WHO: Demelza Robins and Theodore Nott
WHEN: Tuesday, January 13
WHERE: Theodore's house.
WHAT: Demelza comes over to visit. Things get awkward.
RATING: R. It's FILTHY. Or, you know. Probably PG.
STATUS: Incomplete.

Bored out of his mind, Theodore wandered about his apartment and tidied things as he waited for his friend to arrive. He and Demelza hung out a lot lately, which he honestly hoped was because she liked his company, and not because she pitied him for being such an antisocial individual. They often went out for ice cream or met up to do something muggle-themed and discomforting for Theodore, but tonight they had opted to just enjoy each other's company at his place. He'd safely stashed away any dirty magazines or anything else incriminating she could possibly find. It was never too late to avoid extreme embarrassment.

Perking up with the knock on his door, Theodore slipped his left hand into his pocket and crossed the living room and into the front area. He checking the peephole first, and after confirming it was his friend, he took a step back and opened the door. "You're late," Theodore lied, taking his default approach in conversation with Demelza and teasing her. He lifted his watch up and checked the time, lifting his brows as though completely unimpressed. "By two minutes. But I guess you can come in."

She should have expected that sort of a greeting from Theodore, really. But she was too busy fighting down a sudden, irrational panic that came with the opening of the door and nearly dropped the apple crumble she'd brought with her. Gathering herself before he had too much time to notice, or so she hoped, she shook her head and gently pushed him. "I'm not late!" was her initial earnest reaction. "Your watch is late. I came two minutes early because you're just that cool, but," she surveyed him. "Now I'm not so sure."

She was joking, of course. She was beginning to get used to Theodore's house by now, although the memory of her first tour here did linger somewhere in the back of her memory, although it wasn't something she wanted to admit - because that would be highly uncomfortable and he'd probably think she was judging him for it. And really, she still didn't know what to think. Why was it easier to ignore subjects you could not form an opinion on, and why was she having so much difficulty forming an opinion on this matter at all? She did not know.

Stepping past him, Demelza handed over the dessert. "Mum made it," she informed him. And decided to omit the fact that it wasn't really for him specifically and Demelza had just knicked it off the counter because neither of the Robins' women were going to be at home to consume it themselves.

Theodore smirked at Demelza's response to him, thankfully missing her lack of composer when he first opened the door. Or, you know, he wouldn't have let her hear the end of it. He had his own less-than-smooth moments too, and Demelza was usually polite enough to glaze over them. Theodore didn't afford others that luxury. You simply weren't on Theodore's radar unless he was teasing you constantly - it was the price on paid when interacting with him. And really, Demelza had been hanging around with him for too long. She was picking up bits and pieces of his bad behaviour.

"You mum made something for me? There's more to this story," Theodore replied suspiciously, shutting the door behind the two of them before turning to accept the dessert. He balanced it with one hand momentarily so he could signal for his friend to follow him into the kitchen. The house was oddly spotless looking - if it weren't for the dark interior decor of the estate, it would have looked almost pleasant inside. Almost. "Thank you, though," Theodore continued as he set the pan on the island counter and turned back to his friend. "That's one less dish the elf will have to worry about."

"Well. She made it, and I brought it here," she confessed. "So, no, she didn't really make it for you. Although, she didn't seem to mind too much when I told her I asked you to see Oliver!." Thank heavens that was over now. She was looking forward to not hearing music from the production ever being played in their house ever again. There'd been moments when she felt spending time with her step-mother would be more relaxing. And that was saying a lot, for as easy a person Demelza was, she still could not make a concession for Anise.

"Doesn't he have a name?" was what she wanted to ask as she followed Theodore into the kitchen. Usually, she refrained from commenting on the fact he had a house elf at all - something she still found weird. Instead, she tucked back her hair and glanced at her surroundings. "You're welcome. Did you... do something?"

"His name is "The Elf". If you're addressing him directly, you can call him Elf," Theodore responded in a matter-of-fact tone, lifting his brows at Demelza's question. He understood why people disliked the mistreatment of house elves (to some extent, anyway), but they were animals that literally just loved to serve humans. Theodore refused to pretend that he considered them equal to people, or anything more than a very useful pet, really. His father had treated their elf much worse. Theodore's compassion for the creature had developed during his father's stay in prison when he had no one else to communicate with.

"Do something?" He repeated, moving on past his elf in hopes that it wouldn't come up again. He followed Demelza's eyes and then glanced around the kitchen with her before returning to watch her again. Was she referring to the clean job, perhaps? "I cleaned up quite a bit. The place was bothering me and I don't have a job, so. It seemed like a good idea."

Demelza didn't say anything. It wasn't an argument she wanted to have, to be perfectly honest. She fought for people and left others, like Hermione Granger, to push S.P.E.W. to frontier. And, she couldn't even consistently decide what it was that she thought about non-humans anyway, aside from the desire to treat them with general decency and respect if she liked them, and to avoid them if she didn't. And she really did not like hags and Goblins right now. They either made her feel sick or had been making her banking so difficult she was sick of them.

"Well, I think The Theodore did a good job, and he should come over and fix my place. When I get one," she bit her lip. She knew she couldn't afford to rent something decent on her own and have enough to cater to her current lifestyle, but good flatmates were hard to come by and she didn't relish at the prospect of living with a stranger, and the offered room at Trystan's was just... No.

"Are you interested in getting work?" she inquired out of natural curiosity and without trying to imply anything in this statement.

"Hm?" Theodore responded, narrowing his eyes a bit and looking a tad confused. Was she offering him work at her house? He'd help her clean if she ever wanted, but that was moreso as a friend than anything else. People with access to his kind of resources really didn't need a job like that. It took him a moment of inward conversation with himself to come to the conclusion that she could not have been offering this, and after a bit of a pause in conversation, he moved past this and continued.

"Oh, no. I'm not interested at the moment," he managed, crossing his arms and leaning back into the kitchen counter. He didn't know how much he should have been talking about his current business, so he kept his explanation brief. He'd always found that it was best not to give out too much information. "I'm trying to deal with my father's money. A lot of it is frozen in his bank account. So I've been running around and meeting with lawyers to get a hold of it. I'm not really looking around for steady employment yet."

"You know I was only joking, right?" she explained with a smile, noting that he didn't seem to have got it. She could empathise with the situation, though, not that she was proud of it. It wasn't nice to know that things went over your head - and it wasn't a measure of her intelligence, it was just that she wasn't accustomed to speaking in innuendo all that often, being the sort of person who preferred communications to be a little more blunt.

"Well, that sounds like a bit of a headache," she mused. "Especially with Gringott's being an unstable nightmare at all the wrong times. I think some people in my family have actually changed banks, and then, you know - the rest are Muggles and it doesn't affect them anyway."

"Anyway," it was time to move onto something a little more light-hearted now, "how have you been this week?"

"Yes," Theodore answered immediately to her first question, though to be honest, he hadn't really known what she had meant. He was used to people being skeptical about his lack of employment. Theodore was driven and had always done exceptionally well in school. Besides, it wasn't very Slytherin to appear as though he was wasting his life away, was it? He should have been displaying some ambition. In reality, of course, all of Theodore's 'work' was done privately, and his wealth was the self-sustained, old-money sort. He wasn't going to be in trouble anytime soon - even when a lot of his father's money was frozen.

Theodore opened his mouth to say a few nasty things about Gringott's, but wisely decided to let the moment pass when Demelza changed the subject. It was probably best that he didn't get into the entire situation. He didn't want to end up ranting for days.

"I've been fine," he replied vaguely, and then feeling considerably lame with that answer, he forced himself to elaborate. He was so socially awkward. "I relaxed, mostly. This week has been quiet for me. I did a lot of reading, cleaning and shopping," Theodore cut off for a moment, smirking a bit and rolling his eyes at himself. "Much like a housewife, really."

"Okay, good," she returned with a smile and left it there, fully prepared to drop the matter before it got drawn out into some awkward miscommunicated mess.

"Lucky!" she exclaimed, upon hearing that his week had been relaxing. "I never have much time for reading, though I wish I did. And mum does the shopping, and I think the only reason our flat looks tidy is because we're never in it." Another reason why she also didn't feel the immediate need to move out again - she was rarely around for their relationship to get overly tense, although after the journal hijacking incident, there was a high possibility that she'd been avoiding and ignoring her mother. No. Not possibility - she was. For a week or two at least.
